The Mormons created the State of Deseret in 1849 but Congress would not admit the state to the Union. Instead Congress created the Utah Territory. This Territory encompassed a vast area including most of present day Nevada (Statehood: October 31, 1864) and part of present day Wyoming and Colorado (seperate Territory established in 1861). Utah's territorial period lasted until 1896.
