Saskatchewan One Room School Districts
Saskatchewan One Room School Districts
The Provincial Archives Regina Boards has made up these school district maps in Saskatchewan. Using a digital camera these are photographs of some of them. There are three sections to these school district maps. Photographs of the pink book, photographs of the map mounted on "boards" and additional maps from a variety of sources.

School District Maps Tutorial and Introduction to Legal Land Locations -Tsp and Rge:
to understand locations presented below
The larger the township (TSP)number the further north.
West of the 3 meridian and the higher the range (RGE) number, the closer to the Alberta border
West of the 1st or prime meridian with the smaller the range number the closer to the Manitoba border
West of the 2nd meridian in the center of the province, the higher the range number, the further west.

For example these cities are located at:
Saskatoon Tsp 36 Rge 5 W of the 3rd Meridian
Regina Tsp 17 Rge 19 W of the 2nd Meridian

The maps are marked by school district number.

School District Number listing orders Saskachewan one room school house districts by NUMBER and gives their corresponding school district name and a link to location

Alphabetical listing, Place name or town listing, Legal Land Location listing

Each page or map in the "Pink Book of Maps" was photographed by dividing the map into thirds visually (excepting the smaller maps west of the first meridian divided into half), so you will see the notation - West (left), Center, and East (right) - for each map sheet named for an area of the province. The dates of the maps change from sheet to sheet, and the dates are usually on the East (right) sheet. There is overlapping between the photos. The index divides the photographs into three categories by meridian.

Hopefully these maps are some help to you. School district boundaries did change as other school districts were formed in their area, or as populations changed due to the arrival of the rail and town or village formation. The school districts were generally made to limit a child's walking distance to school to 2 -3 miles. Therefore dotting the prairie were one-room school houses erected every seven to eight miles.

The school yard itself was one to four acres in size. An acre is 165 feet by 264 feet. and homesteads or one-quarter sections of land were 160 acres or 65 ha. The Dominion Land Survey from 1871-1880 allowed for Sections 11 and 29 to be set aside by the Dominion Government for school sections in every surveyed township. A township was 6 square miles. If sections 11 or 29 were located on land not suitable for a school house, then schools could be centered within the community of school children. At times homesteaders would donate the acre or two needed for the school yard from his quarter section of land. Consistently using sections 11 and 29 would mean a walking distance to school of 2 -3 miles

When looking at the maps, a square plot of land 1 mile by 1 mile and is termed a "section" of land or 640 acres. Within the "Pink Book of Maps", a section is divided with a dashed line denoting a quarter section or 160 acres. Not marked on the maps were the surveyed areas for the grid roads which were allocated at 1 mile and 2 mile intervals determining the division between sections, while at the same time providing access to every quarter section.

In the "Pink Book of Maps" north is always up for a compass reading, west to the left, and east to the right, no variation. The blue lines are the one room school house boundaries as of the date of the map, and the red lines are the Rural Municipality or R.M. boundaries at the date of the map.

1917 School Inspectorate Map

This map shows the province's Rural Municipalities as of 1917 - thin black lines.
There are several map segments online so it can be read.
The image of the entire provincial map just could not be read at all.
From the Legend; Upon the map are drawn the School Inspectorate boundaries - thick black lines.
(This is the area the one school inspectors had to cover before the highways were asphalted and graded, sometimes travelling by horseback, or Model A car over the prairie)
High Schools are green dots, the University of Saskatchewan is yellow
Red are consolidated schools
Additionally, the school district numbers are marked (Numerical listing is online to determine school name here)
as well as a dot is given for the location of the school house location, however the school district boundaries are not shown on this map.
This map is divided into one mile by one mile sections, and is marked by township and range numbers. (Legal land descriptions explained)
The map web album will be provided (time permitting) with the index by Rural Municipality. Volunteer run project.
However, in the meatime, scroll through the Map images which are uploaded. ;-)

This is a album of pictures photographed of the map of "in segments" so the placenames and school district numbers could be read
These maps depict the entire area of the school district, but not the school house location
The school district numbers are marked (Numerical listing is online to determine school name here)
The Rural municipality numbers are red, as are the boundaries as of the date of the map
This map is divided into one mile by one mile sections, and is marked by township and range numbers. (Legal land descriptions explained)
This web map album will be completed with a Table of Contents over time (under construction)
However, in the meantime, scroll through the map images which are uploaded. ;-)
