Names with Land properties:
There are two main sources for
early land records giving names and legal descriptions. Be sure to check
both. Manitoba is located East of the Prime Meridian (EPM) and West of
the Prime Meridian (WP1).
National Archives has the Western
Land Grants homestead entries from government land, 1870-1930.
If you find something there, then see the records from the Provincial
Archives of Manitoba in Winnipeg:
Glenbow Archives in Alberta has
the database for the CPR
land sales. These were sales by the Canadian Pacific Railway
of their land holdings in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, 1881-1906.
Métis
Scrip Records: Can search by surname/place.

1905: There is a huge 1905 Canadian National Railway map that has range
and township numbers, which is useful if you have a general idea of a location.

Geonames: If you know the town
that your ancestor was from or need to know what region a city is in, use
Canada's
Official Geographic Names Site. It is searchable by current and formerly
official names. You can get a map of the area, find out the distance from
one location to another and look up all other settled areas within a given
radius.
Post offices: Place descriptions
can also be found by using the Post
Office database that includes legal land descriptions at the bottom
of the page of the office location (except for larger cities).
