Reminiscences of Early Nanaimo Days

Interesting Series of Articles Commenced

Today the Free Press is pleased to announce that it starts what will prove to be an interesting series of articles from the pen of Mr. Mark Bate, Sr. dealing with early days oin Nanaimo.  The preliminary article is published today to be followed at intervals of about a week by other very interesting reminiscences of Nanaimo's earlier days.  There is no one better able to do justice to the subject than Mr. Bate, who has been a reisdent of this city for half a century, during all of which time he has been very prominently identified with the interest of the city in many ways, both as a city official and as a private citizen.  Mr. Bate has a remarkable memory, an easy, fluent flow of language and is a veritable store  house for facts, figures, historical lore and amusing and interesting incidents of the strenuous earlier days of the city's life.  To many readers, who have passed through some of the experiences which he will relate, the recalling of sweet memories will awaken the highest interest and to the younger people the articles should be both instructive and entertaining.  The articles will be looked for with great interest by all our readers.
