I am looking for information on my great-grandfather. On the 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses, his surname was spelled Howton. For some reason, after his death around 1926, my grandfather, his son, Alfred Franklin Houghton, decided to change the spelling to Houghton. According to the the 1900 census, he was born in Alabama in 1852. His father was born in Kentucky and his mother in South Carolina. I'm told he moved to Mississipi, where he met and married Elizabeth Franklin(my great-grandmother). In 1900, they lived in Lamar county in Texas. I'm fairly new at this and have found out that southern states in those days did not keep the best of records. Any additional information or hints would be greatly appreciated.

About 1883 Benjamin M. Coulter lost his wife Louisa to "Milk Leg" after the last child was born. He later married Sallie Bailey, a widow also. Benjamin brought three children, George W., Josephine and Mettie, into the marriage. Sallie had two of her own, Alonzo (Lon) and Edward (Ed) Bailey. Ben and Sallie married abt 1889 and lived in Chambers County, AL. In 1890 Lilia COULTER was born to them. There was another named Martha COULTER b. abt 1893 and the third and last Andrew Jackson COULTER (known as Jack by immediate family) b. abt 1894. There are quite a few tales about this arrangement of people. In the 1900 Federal Census Sallie was living with the 3 new Coulter children and her sons. But somehow on this Census the named was mispelled COULTON but was then correct on the 1910 Census. The two original Coulter girls were living with their older brother and his family. So, apparently, they chose not to go with Sallie and the half-related siblings, for whatever reason. Uncle "Jack" continued to visit family in Chambers County, AL until around the 1940's, as well as my father and his sister can recall. Jack was the half-brother of my grandfather George W. COULTER. It is said that Jack moved to South Al. and the girls moved to the Atlanta. I don't know if it was before or after marriage.Help, Please.
