HON. WILLIAM K. JONES.
William K. Jones is well known in financial circles, being the manager of the abstract and title department of the Bankers & Stockmen’s Trust Company of Cheyenne, for the state of Wyoming. He was born in Potsdam, New York, on the 6th of June, 1866, a son of William R. and Emma (Knapp) Jones, the former a farmer by occupation, who in the year 1869 left the Empire state and removed with his family to Guthrie county, Iowa. Some years later he took up his abode in Seattle, where he is now living retired, but the mother has passed away. William K. Jones has a brother and a half sister.
In the public schools of Iowa William K. Jones pursued his education, remaining on the farm till 1883, and then he entered upon his business career as clerk in a bank. He also followed railroading as a telegraph operator, and subsequently was with the American Linseed Company at Des Moines, Iowa, remaining in the employ of that corporation for thirteen and a half years. He also followed expert corporation accounting, and thus along various lines was gaining constantly broadening experience. He was in the state auditor’s office at Des Moines, Iowa, for a year and a half, and in April, 1907, he came to Wyoming to engage in abstract work. He compiled the first set of records of Laramie and Albany counties for the Pioneer Abstract Company of Cheyenne and also was the organizer of this company and also the Albany County Pioneer Abstract Company of Laramie. He conducted the business of the company for nine years, after which he sold out to the Union Trust Company, of which he was also one of the organizers. He compiled all of the records of the latter company. For the past few months, however, he has been office manager of the Gilinsky-Peasley Company and on the 1st of November, 1917, he assumed his present position as manager of the abstract and title department of the Bankers & Stockmen’s Trust Company.
Mr. Jones has been married twice. In 1890 he wedded Miss Frances Griswold, who died in 1903, and in 1905 he married Mrs. Anna Byers, who passed away in 1914. In politics Mr. Jones is a republican and is active in affairs of the party, doing all in his power to promote its growth and insure its success. He served as representative of his district in the state legislature in 1913 and 1914, and in 1917 was again elected a member of the general assembly and is now serving as speaker of the house, in which connection his rulings are strictly fair and impartial. while the proceedings are conducted in a most orderly manner. Fraternally Mr. Jones is identified with the Knights of Pythias and he is also a member of the Industrial Club and the Cheyenne Country Club, while of the Fort Russell Cheyenne Golf Club he was formerly secretary and treasurer. He is widely known throughout Wyoming and is held in the highest esteem by all with whom he has been brought in contact. Those who know him entertain for him warm regard, recognizing his worth as a man and as a citizen.
