THOMAS H. BUTLER.
Thomas H. Butler, who is superintendent for the Union Pacific Coal Company at Superior, has been closely identified with the development of this state. of which he is one of the native sons. He was born in Carbon on the 27th of November. 1870, his parents being John and Susan (Morgan) Butler, the former a native of Wales, while the latter was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. John Butler came to America in 1868 and removed to Wyoming ere the era of railroad building in this state. He settled in Carbon county, where he engaged in coal mining, and at a later period resided in various sections of the state, Jiving at Cumberland. at Diamondville and at Rock Springs. while at the present time he makes his home in Hanna, at the age of seventy-seven years. In 1917 he was called upon to mourn the loss of his wife, who passed away on the 2d of October, at the age of sixty-nine years, and was laid to rest in the cemetery at Carbon.
Thomas H. Butler was the eldest in their family of thirteen children. In his boyhood days he attended the public schools of Carbon, after which he started out to provide for his own support when a little lad of but eleven years. He began working in the mines and was employed at different periods at Carbon, at Rock Springs, at Hanna and Superior. In 1908, following the explosion at Hanna, he was made superintendent of the mines there, and he is now filling the responsible position of superintendent for the Union Pacific Coal Company at Superior, where he directs the efforts of many miners engaged in developing the coal resources in this section of the state.
On the 1st of June, 1892, Mr. Butler was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Watson, of Carbon, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Watson, and they have become parents of four children who are yet living, while three have passed away. Those who survive are as follows. Mrs. Ethel McClennon, born in Carbon in 1894, is a graduate of the schools of Hanna and now has two children, Benjamin and Rodney. Benjamin Butler, born in Hanna in March, 1898, and graduated from the public schools of his native town, is now in the United States navy on the battleship Dakota. Grace, born in Hanna in March, 1903, is attending school in Superior. Thomas, born in Laramie, Wyoming, in January, 1912, is also in school. The other three children died in infancy.
Mr. Butler votes with the republican party and served as county commissioner of Carbon county for eight years. He was also deputy county clerk for two years. He is a thirty-second degree Mason, belonging to the consistory at Rawlins, and he is a past grand chancellor of the Knights of Pythias of Wyoming. He also has membership with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and with the Episcopal church, and these associations indicate much of the nature of his interests and the rules which govern his conduct. His life has been one of marked devotion to the interests entrusted to his care and to the public good and he is known as a most valued and worthy citizen of Superior.
