S. A. WATKINS.
S. A. Watkins, one of the prominent sheep men of Wyoming, residing in Cody, has been identified with the interests of the Big Horn basin since 1900. He is a native of Iowa. his birth having occurred in Keokuk county, July 1, 1869, his parents being William J. and Sarah (Hudson) Watkins. The father was a farmer by occupation and passed away in Iowa in 1896. The mother subsequently removed to Montana, where she made her home with a son, there passing away in 1899.
S. A. Watkins was educated in the common schools of Iowa and Nebraska, his parents having removed to the latter state in 1881, returning thence to Iowa only two months prior to the father’s demise. On reaching man’s estate S. A. Watkins took up the occupation of farming, to which he had been reared, and also engaged in the raising of cattle in Nebraska. In 1899 he went to Montana, but after a year spent in that state came to the Big Horn basin of Wyoming, settling on a homestead about six miles south of Cody. He arrived on the last day of March, 1900, and on the 5th of the following April purchased a half interest in a bunch of sheep and thus began his career as a wool grower. He now runs some four thousand head of sheep and is one of the successful men in this section of the state. In business affairs he is systematic and his enterprise, sound judgment and unfaltering industry are salient features in his growing success.
In 1896 Mr. Watkins was united in marriage to Miss Alice Sechrist, of Knox county, Nebraska. His political endorsement has always been given to the republican party since age conferred upon him the right of franchise. He is a member of the town council of Cody at the present writing and in 1909 he was appointed by Governor Brooks a member of the board of commissioners to organize Park county. He has been active in community affairs, standing at all times for those interests which are a matter of civic improvement, of civic virtue and of civic pride. Fraternally he is identified with the Masons, belonging to Shoshone Lodge, No. 21, A. F. & A. M., of Cody Cody Chapter, R. A. M. Constantine Commandery, No. 9, K. T., of Cody; Kalif Temple, A. A. 0. N. M. S., of Sheridan, Wyoming; and Cody Chapter, 0. E. S. with which his wife is also connected. Mrs. Watkins likewise belongs to the Christian Science church.. They are valued and representative residents of Cody and the Big Horn basin and Mr. Watkins has made for himself a very creditable position in its business circles, being today one of the leading sheep men of Wyoming and thus actively connected with a business which is one of the basic elements of the development and prosperity of the state.
