ROBERT A. SMITH.
Robert A. Smith, vice president and general manager of the Northern Wyoming Telephone Company, with headquarters at Newcastle, comes to the west from Cleveland, Ohio, in which city he was born on the 21st of January, 1880, his parents being James F. and Margaret L. (Allan) Smith, both of whom were natives of Scotland, where they were reared and married. They crossed the Atlantic in 1870 and became residents of Lawrence, Massachusetts, while subsequently they removed to Cleveland, Ohio, where the father engaged in merchandising. At a later period he became a resident of Beatrice, Nebraska, and after establishing his home there in 1888 he again followed merchandising until his death, which occurred in 1900. His widow is now residing with her son, Robert A.
After attending the high school of Beatrice, Nebraska, Robert A. Smith started out in the business world as a messenger for the Postal Telegraph Company and thus made his initial step somewhat in the line of business in which he is now engaged. He was afterward employed as a clerk in a hardware store and still later became identified with the City Gas Company as its secretary. He afterward served for a year as clerk of the county court by appointment, and in 1906 he came to Wyoming, establishing his home in Newcastle, where he entered the employ of the Merchants & Stock Growers Bank, of which he was subsequently made cashier. In 1909 the bank was sold and in the spring of 1910 he assisted in organizing the Northern Wyoming Telephone Company, of which he was chosen secretary and manager, while subsequently he was elected vice president and general manager, in which dual position he has since served and has largely developed the system and has given to its patrons excellent service. Mr. Smith also owns ranch interests of a thousand acres in Weston county and his investments have always been most judiciously placed and have brought to him gratifying success.
In 1912 Mr. Smith was married to Miss Wilma C. Briggs, of Beemer, Nebraska, and to them have been born two children. Forrest A. and Robert A. Mrs. Smith is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Mr. Smith has membership with Beatrice Lodge, No. 26, A. F. & A. M. Politically he is a republican and while not a politician in the sense of office seeking, he is always ready to support any plan or measure for the general good and has cooperated in many projects for the upbuilding of city, county and state. He is a firm believer in the future of Wyoming and is doing everything in his power to advance her interests. He stands as a representative citizen, alert, energetic and determined, and his worth is widely acknowledged by all who know him.
