PLATT E. WILSON.

PLATT E. WILSON.
Platt E. Wilson, who is filling the position of county surveyor of Lincoln county and is well known in the business circles of Kemmerer as proprietor of the Lincoln County Garage, was born in Albia, Iowa, December 31, 1883, a son of the late Robert G. Wilson, also a native of Iowa, and a representative of one of the old pioneer families of that state. The Wilsons are of English lineage. The grandfather of Platt E. Wilson was Grinder Wilson, a native of Indiana, who removed to Iowa when the work of progress and development had scarcely been begun in that state. He cast in his lot with the settlers upon the frontier and aided in reclaiming the land for the purposes of cultivation. His son, Robert G. Wilson, was reared and educated upon the Iowa farm and in early manhood assisted in carrying on agricultural pursuits but at length entered the ministry. He had attended the public schools of Montezuma, Iowa, and he completed his education in Mount Pleasant, where he was graduated from the Iowa Wesleyan College. Entering upon religious work, he remained in the ministry to the time of his death, which occurred in Fremont, Iowa, in 1894, when he was but thirty-four years of age. His wife bore the maiden name of Mattie Catherine Platt and was born in Iowa, representing one of the old pioneer families of the state, originally from Pennsylvania. She is still living and makes her home in Ames, Iowa. By her marriage she had but two children, the younger son being Charles P. Wilson, who resides in Decorah, Iowa.
Platt E. Wilson of this review is indebted to the public school system of Montezuma, Iowa, for the educational opportunities which he enjoyed in early youth. He afterward attended the Iowa State College, from which he was graduated with the B. C. E. degree in 1909. In the meantime, however, he had made his initial step in the business world, being employed as a clerk and also at farm work. He was desirous, however, of acquiring a good education, recognizing its value as a factor in success in life. He therefore made good use of his time and opportunities and following his graduation he entered upon the active work of his profession as an employe of the Oregon Short Line Railway Company, his duties taking him from Kemmerer to Big Piney, in Lincoln county. He also engaged in the private practice of civil engineering at Fort Bridger, where he remained for two years. In November, 1916, he was elected to the office of county surveyor, in which capacity he is now acceptably serving. At different times he has been connected with other business interests than those already mentioned. He was at one time associated with the Kemmerer Coal Company, spending four years in the office, and during that period, or in 1915, he became connected with the automobile business, in which he is still engaged, now handling the Chandler and Dodge cars, together with a full line of automobile supplies and accessories. In connection with his trade he conducts a large and profitable repair business, having the best equipped shop in this inter-mountain country, employing from four to ten skilled workmen. His business is steadily growing and his patronage has now reached very satisfactory proportions, so that he derives therefrom a gratifying annual income.
On the 10th of December, 1911, in Kemmerer, Mr. Wilson was united in marriage to Miss Edith Rathbun, a native of Wyoming and a daughter of Charles and Nellie (Embreel Rathbun. who became pioneer settlers of Wyoming. removing to the west from the state of New York. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson have become the parents of two children: Mary Jane, born at Frontier, Wyoming, November 8, 1912; and Robert Rathbun, born at Frontier, March 4, 1914.
Mr. Wilson gives his political endorsement to the democratic party and is recognized as one of its active workers, doing everything in his power to promote its growth and insure its success, while in public office his course reflects credit upon his party and upon his constituents. He belongs to the Chamber of Commerce and cooperates heartily in its measures and movements for the general good. He is also a member of Alpha Tau Omega, a college fraternity. The family are members of the Methodist church.
