PETER SMART.

PETER SMART.
Peter Smart is one of the well known hotel men of Wyoming, being proprietor of the Kuster Hotel of Laramie. His experiences have brought him through the phases of farm life and ranching to his present position and he is today one of the well known and popular hotel proprietors of the state.
He was born in Scotsburn, Pictou county, Nova Scotia, January 11, 1863, and is a son of William and Katherine (McKay) Smart, the former a native of Scotland, while the latter was born in Nova Scotia. The father crossed the Atlantic to the new world in young manhood and established his home in Nova Scotia, where he spent his remaining days. He was a well known farmer of Scotsburn, where he died in the year 1908, having for more than a decade survived his wife, who passed away in 1897.
Peter Smart, of this review, was the eldest in their family of nine children. In his boyhood days he attended the schools of his native country and after his textbooks were put aside he entered into the teaming business in connection with Charles Hutton. He arrived on the Laramie plains in 1880 and devoted fifteen years to the cattle business, thus gaining broad experience in connection with that phase of life in the west. In 1895 he came to Laramie, where he took up railroad work, and later embarked in the hotel business. He became proprietor of Hotel Kuster in 1906 and through his able management has made this one of the popular hostelries of southern Wyoming. It is liberally patronized, traveling men delighting to make this a Sunday stop. Mr. Smart is an obliging and courteous host, putting forth, every effort to promote the comfort of his guests, and his business methods indicate a most progressive spirit.
On the 4th of December, 1890, Mr. Smart was united in marriage to Miss Sarah McPherson, of Laramie, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas McPherson, who at one time were residents of Prince Edward Island and afterward of Nebraska. Mr. and Mrs. Smart have become parents of two children: Mary Catherine, now Mrs. Bernard Morgan, who is a graduate of the Laramie schools and who by her marriage has become the mother of one child, Bernard Frances Morgan; and Eliza, now Mrs. Ralph Glenn, who is also a graduate of the Laramie schools and has two children, Peter Smart and Ross Harper Glenn. Both daughters are residents of Laramie.
Fraternally Mr. Smart is connected with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He has filled the office of county commissioner for one term but has never been a politician in the sense of office seeking. His political allegiance is given to the republican party. He stands at all times for progress and improvement in public affairs and is ever ready and willing to give his aid and cooperation to plans and measures for the general good. His record indicates what can be accomplished through individual effort intelligently directed. Step by step he has worked his way upward, utilizing carefully the opportunities which have come his way, and today he is regarded as a most valuable factor in the business circles of his adopted city.
