PETER MARTIN.

MR. AND MRS. PETER MARTIN.
PETER MARTIN.
Business enterprise in Cumberland finds a substantial representative in Peter Martin, who is there engaged in general merchandising. He was born in northern Italy, November 14, 1869, a son of Dominick and Lena Martin, who always remained residents of their native land. The father was educated there and devoted his attention to the meat business. He died in Italy in 1914, at the age of seventy-four years, having for a considerable period survived his wife, who passed away in 1890, at the age of sixty-five years. They had a family of three children: Mrs. Fannie Bino, now living in Collinsville, Illinois; Stephen. who is proprietor of a meat market in Italy; and Peter, of this review.
The last named, the youngest in the family, was a pupil in the schools of Italy and when his textbooks were put aside he began mining coal and continued actively in the work until twenty years of age. He then joined the Italian army as a private and remained in the military service of his country for about two years. On the expiration of that period he came to America in 1891 and made his way across the country to Colorado, securing employment in the Brookside mines near Florence. There he remained for six years, after which he removed to Diamondville, Wyoming, where he worked in the mines for eight years. He. next removed to Cumberland, where he invested his savings in a stock of general merchandise, but in that undertaking he lost all that he had accumulated up to that time. He then turned his attention to the dairy business, in which he continued for four years, when he sold out and again purchased a stock of merchandise. His previous failure had not disheartened him. He was wise enough to recognize the fact that he had all of the strength and all of the capacity which he had possessed before, and to this he had added valuable experience. The new combination proved a stable foundation upon which to build success, and he is today one of the leading merchants in his section of Uinta county, having a large and well appointed store in which he carries on extensive line of general merchandise. The number of his patrons is continually increasing and in the conduct of his business he has always recognized the fact that satisfied patrons are the best advertisement.
On the 28th of August. 1897, Mr. Martin was married to Miss Augusta Castagnello, of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, whose parents were natives of Italy. Mr. and Mrs. Martin have become the parents of seven children: Lena, who was born in Newcastle, Colorado. June 5, 1898, and is a graduate of the schools of Cumberland; Dominick, who was born in Diamondville, Wyoming, November 14, 1899, and is now in school; Thressa, who was born in Diamondville, December 27, 1900; Tony, born December 17, 1902, who died January 15, 1918, at Salt Lake City; William, born in Cumberland, February 22, 1904: Mary, born in Cumberland, May 22, 1906; and Eda, born in Cumberland, July 1, 1909. All of the younger children are still in school.
The religious faith of the family is that of the Roman Catholic church. In his political views Mr. Martin is a republican, giving earnest support to the party and doing all in his power to advance its success. He has worked his way upward and is a self-made man whose persistency of purpose has enabled him to overcome obstacles and difficulties, while his sound judgment and unfaltering enterprise have been the basis of his growing prosperity. He has never had occasion to regret his determination to come to the new world, for he has here found the opportunities which he sought and in their utilization has won a most creditable position among the men of affluence in Cumberland.
