PATRICK H. BURNELL.
Patrick H. Burnell, general superintendent of the Lion Coal Company at Lion, Wyoming, and general superintendent for the Wyoming Coal Company at Rock Springs, where he makes his home, was born in Buchtel, Ohio, June 24, 1882, a son of Patrick and Mary (Conley) Burnell, both of whom were natives of Ireland. In early life they came to America and were married at Buchtel, Ohio. The father engaged in mining in that state, where he resided to the time of his demise, which occurred in 1902, when he had reached the age of fifty-four years. His wife died in 1892, at the age of thirty-nine. They were the parents of nine children.
Patrick H. Burnell, the youngest son, spent his boyhood days in Buchtel, Ohio, where he attended the public schools, and later he became a pupil in the Western University of Pennsylvania, in which he spent one term. He afterward continued his education in the Ohio Northern University at Ada, Ohio, and subsequently devoted his attention to coal mining. He had become connected with coal mining interests when but twelve years of age and his work in that connection had been put aside only when he embraced the opportunity of furthering his education by attending school and university. He pursued a coal mining course through the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton and was graduated. He continued to follow mining in Ohio until he reached the age of twenty years, when he became connected with mining interest at Monongahela, Pennsylvania. There he resided for live years. after which he removed to the west, settling at Greeley, Colorado, where he spent four years. engaged in engineering work with an irrigation company. In 1912 he arrived in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and became connected with the Wyoming Coal Company, working first as a laborer, but advancing step by step through various promotions until he became assistant mining engineer and afterward mine boss. opening up new mines for the company. Later he was advanced to the position of general superintendent of the Wyoming Coal Company, with headquarters at Rock Springs, and in this connection is directing important interests. He is likewise general superintendent of the Lion Coal Company and has thus neconie a leading factor in the development of the coal resources of the state.
On the 15th of April, 1913, at Rock Springs, Mr. Burnell was married to Miss Marie Warriner, a daughter of W. S. and Kate Warriner, who were pioneer people of this section of the state. They now have one child, Marie, born in Rock Springs in May. 1915. The religious faith of the parents is that of the Roman Catholic church and fraternally Mr. Burnell is connected with the Elks. In politics he maintains an independent course, voting for men and measures rather than party. He has always preferred to concentrate his energies and attention upon his business affairs, and entirely through his own efforts he has worked his way upward, being a self-made man and one whose entire career commends him to the confidence, goodwill and high respect of those with whom he has been associated.
