0. E. Sheldon, one of the substantial and representative residents of Upton, has been extensively engaged in the raising of cattle and horses in Crook county during the past eighteen years and is the owner of a valuable ranch of five hundred and sixty acres twelve miles northeast of Upton. His birth occurred in Ringgold county, Iowa, on the 5th of May, 1864, his parents being Edgar and Matilda (Baker) Sheldon, the former a native of Ohio, while the latter was born in Pennsylvania. They removed to Iowa in young manhood and young womanhood and were married in that state. It was in the year 1854 that Edgar Sheldon purchased his first forty acres of Iowa land from the government. He is still living in Ringgold county at the advanced age of eighty-four years and is well known as one of the honored pioneers of his part of Iowa.
0. E. Sheldon attended the common schools in the acquirement of an education and in 1887, when a young man of twenty-three years, he made his way westward, spending about three years in Kansas and Colorado. After returning to Iowa in 1890 he followed farming in Ringgold county until 1900, which year witnessed his arrival in Wyoming. He located on a homestead twelve miles northeast of Upton, in Crook county, and has there been successfully engaged in raising cattle and horses to the present time, his ranch now comprising five hundred and sixty acres. In 1890 Mr. Sheldon was united in marriage to Miss Clara West, of Ringgold county, Iowa, by whom he has four children, namely; Edgar; Francis, located at Astoria, Oregon, in the government service; Mary M.; and Gertrude Opal. Both sons have been called for service in the present war.
Mr. Sheldon gives his political allegiance to the republican party, while fraternally he is identified with the Modern Woodmen of America and the Yeomen. His aid and influence are ever given on the side of progress and improvement and he is numbered among the prosperous and esteemed citizens of northeastern Wyoming.
