MRS. NELLE ARMITAGE.
Mrs. Nelle Armitage, who resides at.. Torrington and is filling the office of county treasurer, was born in Farmington, Illinois, December 17, 1882, a daughter of E. J. and L. B. Erford, who are residents of Nebraska. She was educated in the public schools of Seward, Nebraska, passing through consecutive grades to her graduation from the high school, and later she attended the Peru Normal. She gave her hand in marriage to H. P. Armitage, who was born in Gardner, Illinois, August 9, 1879. He, too, was educated in the public schools of Nebraska, his parents having removed to that state during his early boyhood. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Armitage removed to Wyoming, settling in Torrington in 1910. Mr. Armitage was in the employ of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company as station agent and while serving in that capacity was elected to the office of county treasurer, which position he filled for only two months, when death called him. He passed away on the 1st of March, 1915, and Mrs. Armitage was selected to fill out his unexpired term and was then elected to the position in the fall of 1916, so that she is now serving for the second term.
Mr. Armitage was a supporter of the democratic party and fraternally was connected with the Highlanders and the Masons. Mrs. Armitage is a member of the Order of Rebekahs and also of the Highlanders. Mr. Armitage was a man of genuine worth, his sterling traits of character gaining for him the respect, goodwill and confidence of all who knew him. He won many friends during the period of his residence in Torrington and his death was the occasion of deep and widespread regret.
Mrs. Armitage has a family of five sons, namely: Herbert, Elton, Tom, Ed, and Ross. She is interested in farm lands and has displayed excellent business ability in managing her property interests and in conducting the affairs of the office which she is now so capably filling, her first term’s service having received the endorsement of the general public in her election.
