MARK HIRSCH.

MARK HIRSCH.
Mark Hirsch, of Lander, is superintendent for the Wind River Petroleum Company and is thus actively identified with the development of the oil industry in this state, which in recent years has sprung into prominence, leading to the rapid and substantial development of various sections of Wyoming. He was born in New York, December 28, 1852, and is a son of J. B. and Katherine (Johnson) Hirsch, the former a native of Massachusetts, while the latter was horn in England. They were married, however, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and both have now passed away. In their family were two children.
Mark Hirsch, the only surviving member of the family was a pupil in the public schools of the Empire state to the age of twelve years, when he accompanied his parents on their removal to Pennsylvania and completed his education in that state, there remaining to the age of twenty-three years, when in 1875 he removed to Texas. He was employed upon the plains of that state as a cowboy until 1877, when he went to Mexico, where he engaged in mining. There he continued for two years, after which he returned to Pennsylvania, where he spent the succeeding five years. Later he made his way to Canada, where he also engaged in mining and later yet went to the Black Hills of South Dakota, where he was located for ten years, devoting his attention to mining throughout that entire period. On the expiration of the decade he went to Colorado, where he continued for three years and was also active in connection with mining in that state. In March, 1917, he arrived in Lander, where he is now located and is engaged in the oil business, being superintendent for the Wind River Petroleum Company, which is operating extensive and important oil properties in this section of the state.
In Pennsylvania, in 1880, Mr. Hirsch was united in marriage to Miss Lizzie E. Caldwell, a native of the Keystone state, and to them have been born four children: John B., who is associated with his father in business; Katherine, the wife of George H. Hyde, now in California; Bessie, the wife of K. W. Trimble, of South Dakota; and Helen, the wife of W. S. Carroll, an attorney of Del Norte, Colorado. Mrs. Hirsch is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Mr. Hirsch has membership with the Masonic fraternity and has taken all of the degrees up to and including the Mystic Shrine. In politics he maintains an independent course and does not consider party ties in casting his ballot. He stands for progress and improvement in public affairs, however, and gives his aid and influence to all well defined plans and measures for the public good. He is a progressive business man who has contributed to the material upbuilding of the districts in which he has resided and he is now recognized as an active factor in the development of the oil industry in the section in which he lives. Although he has remained in Lander for but a brief period he has become widely and favorably known, his genuine worth being recognized by all with whom he has been associated.
