JAMES GORDON SHERMAN.
James Gordon Sherman, filling the office of sheriff in Goshen county, was born in Mason county, Texas, on the 8th of July, 1877, and is a son of J. D. and Annie (Williams) Sherman. The family came to Wyoming when Mr. Sherman of this review was but five years of age, and after living in this state for a few years, went to California, where both the parents passed away.
James G. Sherman pursued a public school education and in early life worked at various pursuits that would bring him an honest living. He accompanied his parents to California and thus became familiar with various phases of life in the west, but ultimately he returned to Wyoming, where he engaged in the cattle business in connection with his uncle, with whom he was thus associated until 1897. He was afterward with a cow outfit through the northern country and then engaged in business on his own account. At a later date he spent two years buying horses for the English government. He was called to public office in 1914, when he was elected to the office of sheriff of his county, assuming the duties of the position on the 1st of January, 1915. He was prompt, fearless and loyal and made such an excellent record during his first term that he was reelected for a two years’ term, in which he is now serving.
On the 3d of May, 1907, Mr. Sherman was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Parrish and they have become the parents of four sons, namely: Sylvester, James, Allen, and Calvin.
In his political views Mr. Sherman has always been a democrat since age conferred upon him the right of franchise and has done everything in his power to promote the growth and insure the success of his party. He is connected fraternally with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and with the Knights of Pythias. He is greatly interested in the state and its development and cooperates heartily in all well defined plans and measures for the upbuilding of community, county or commonwealth. He has spent his entire life west of the Mississippi and is largely familiar with its growth and progress, while his activities have been along lines that have contributed to the material upbuilding of the various regions in which he has lived. He is familiar with many of the events which have shaped the pioneer history of Wyoming and at all times he has so conducted his affairs as to enjoy the respect, goodwill and confidence .of those with whom he has been brought in contact.
