HON. HERMAN A. C. LUDDECKE.
Hon. Herman A. C. Luddecke is one of the prominent cattle raisers of Johnson county, but important and extensive as are his business interests he has at the same time found opportunity to cooperate with public interests and has done effective work for the welfare and upbuilding of county and commonwealth both as a private citizen and as a public official.
Born in Germany on the 14th of September, 1862, he acquired a public and high school education in his native country and in March, 1879, at the age of seventeen years, he crossed the Atlantic to the United States, wishing to make his home in the “land of the free.” He had learned the trade of cabinet making and had studied architectural drawing. Landing in New York city, he there remained for three and a half years working at his trade of cabinet making and also at architectural drafting. The west, however, attracted him and in 1883 he started for the setting sun, spending a brief time in Chicago and then proceeding to Omaha, from which point he later made his way to Denver. In August, 1883, he arrived at Tie Siding, Wyoming, where he worked as carpenter on a ranch until the following January, when he removed to Laramie, where he remained until spring. He then continued his journey to Johnson county and for seven or eight years was engaged in carpentering and contracting in Buffalo, thus becoming closely and prominently identified with building operations in that city. In the spring of his arrival in Johnson county, however, he preempted one hundred and sixty acres of land about twenty miles east of Buffalo and in the following years while engaged in contracting and building was stocking his ranch with cattle and adding to his landed holdings from time to time. About 1892 his cattle interests had become of such extent and importance that he gave up contracting in order to concentrate his entire attention upon his ranching interests. He is now the owner of one thousand acres of deeded land and he has two sections of school land under lease. He raises eight hundred head of cattle and has thus become one of the most prominent and successful cattlemen in the state. In recent years he has been breeding thoroughbred white faced cattle and at present has a herd of a hundred or more head of the finest cattle in the state.
On the 1st of January, 1901, Mr. Luddecke was united in marriage to Miss Cecil Dunbar, of Perry, Iowa, and to them have been born two daughters, Hazel and Anna A.
The family are members of the Congregational church and are prominent socially in the county in which they live. Mr. Luddecke is a republican in politics and at the November election of 1914 was chosen to represent his district in the legislature, where he served with distinction as a member of the thirteenth general assembly, giving active support to all progressive measures which he believed would prove of benefit and value to his adopted state. His diligence and determination in business, his enterprise and foresight have made him one of the prosperous men of Johnson county, and the extent and importance of his interests have contributed to the development and prosperity of the district in which he lives.
