DAN C. BARKSDALE.
Dan C. Barksdale is engaged in the real estate and insurance business, handling both life and fire insurance, and he is now general agent for the Columbia National Life Insurance Company and for the Royal Fire Insurance Company. He is well known in these connections as a representative business man of Cheyenne. where he has made his home since i90o. He was born in Halifax county, Virginia, on the 14th of October, 1862, a son of Albert W. and Amelia (Foot) Barksdale, the former a minister of the Baptist church. The father passed away in the year 1878, after which the mother removed from Virginia to Wyoming, where she spent a number of years. Later she returned to Virginia, where she died in 1913. The family numbered four sons and four daughters.
Dan C. Barksdale, the eldest child, was educated in the public schools of Virginia and also spent one term in the Blacksburg Agricultural College. He afterward removed to Texas, where he became identified with stock raising interests, and in 1881 he went to Colorado with a herd of cattle. He was then engaged in the live stock business and in ranching in that state until 1900, when he removed to Wyoming, where he turned his attention to the life insurance and fire insurance business, in which he has since continued. He is now general agent for the Columbia National Life Insurance Company and the Royal Fire Insurance Company and in addition to writing a large amount of insurance annually he is engaged in the real estate business and negotiates many important property transfers. He is thoroughly familiar with property values in Cheyenne and knows exactly what is upon the market, so that he is able to make judicious investments or sales for his clients.
On the 7th of September, 1887, Mr. Barksdale was united in marriage to Miss Amanda A. Burch, of Warrensburg, Missouri, and their children are Richard V., Everett F. and Mary E.
Mr. Barksdale votes with the democratic party, which he has supported throughout the entire period of his manhood. He has been called upon to fill various public positions of honor and trust, the duties of which he has discharged with promptness and fidelity. He served for six years as county assessor of Lincoln county, Colorado, from 1890 until 1896, and in January, 1913, entered upon a two years' term as city commissioner of Cheyenne. He was one of the first to serve under the commission form of government. Fraternally he is connected with the Elks and with the Knights of Pythias and he holds membership in the Industrial Club. He is most public-spirited, is devoted to the welfare of city and state and his allegiance to the public good stands as an unquestioned fact in his career. His entire life has been well spent and his genuine personal worth has gained for him the high regard and respect of all with whom he has been brought in contact.
