CYRUS G. LOWELL.
Thoroughly trained along the line of his profession, Cyrus G. Lowell is successfully engaged in the practice of civil engineering and also devotes considerable time to oil development. He makes his home in Upton, where he has resided since the fall of 1900. He was born in Merrimac, Massachusetts, on the 1st of February, 1882, and is a son of Cyrus and Lyde Lyons (Gamble) Lowell, the former a native of Hallowell, Maine, while the latter was born in Moncton, New Brunswick. They were married in Portland, Maine, where Mr. Lowell was for many years engaged in the retail shoe trade, being one of the dominant factors in the business circles of that city, where he passed away on the 23d of December, 1894. His widow still survives and is yet a resident of Portland. Cyrus G. Lowell was educated in the public schools of Portland and in the Cambridge (Mass.) English high school. In September, 1900, when eighteen years of age, he made his way to the west for the benefit of his health, coming direct to Wyoming. Proceeding to Weston county, he spent but two days in Newcastle and then went upon a sheep ranch, that he might be out in the open. From that time to the present he has been identified with ranch life in this state and has made steady progress in business. In the spring of 1906 he became identified independently with the sheep industry, but soon afterward he disposed of his flocks on account of the prevalence of scab in the sheep, and then stocked his ranch with cattle and horses. He was prominently identified with the stock business until the fall of 1915, when he disposed of the major portion of his holdings and has since given his attention largely to the profession of civil engineering. He began the study of the profession in 1902, having already attained considerable proficiency in higher mathematics while a student in the east. The profession was congenial to him and for a year he worked under a civil engineer in Colorado and subsequently pursued a correspondence course. In the summer of 1912 he attended the University of Wyoming for six weeks, in which time he passed the required examination and was given credit for a year’s university work. In the fall of that year he was elected county surveyor of Weston county and has served in this office continuously since, making a most creditable record during his six years’ connection with the position. He has recently become interested in oil development work and is preparing for the drilling of a well on his holdings, which are in the oil belt and on which in all probability oil will be found. In June, 1906, Mr. Lowell was united in marriage to Mrs. C. D. Minter, who in her maidenhood was Miss Margaret Dukes, of Numa, Iowa. Mr. Lowell is a republican in politics and is now serving as a member of the town council of Upton and also as a member of the school board. He stands for progress and improvement in all public affairs and his aid.and influence are ever on the side of advancement in the civic life of the community. Fraternally he is connected with the Modern Woodmen of America. His genuine worth is the expression of sterling traits of character. Actuated by laudable ambition, he has steadily worked his way upward, utilizing every opportunity that has come to hand, and his persistency and energy have gained him a place among the successful business men and leading citizens of Weston county.
