The sheep industry of Wyoming will furnish few, if any, better illustrations of the possibilities of that business than does the record of the well known firm of Cronberg Brothers of Medicine Bow. In the early '90s two brothers, C. F. R. and R. N. Cronberg, laid the foundation for the firm's wonderful growth while running sheep on shares. Being young men of push, energy and ability, their subsequent success seems but a natural outcome and their positions as men of influence, prominence and affluence in their community seem but a just reward. They are natives of Denmark, their parents being Hans H. and Anna (Rasmussen) Cronberg, who came to America in 1886 and settled near Potter, Nebraska, where the father was engaged in ranching until his tragic death in 1899, resulting from a runaway accident. The team crashed into a telegraph pole, throwing Mr. Cronberg forward out of the wagon under the horses, where he was kicked by the animals and instantly killed. In later years the widow removed to Wyoming, where several of her sons were living, and located at Medicine Bow, where she now makes her home with her son, R. N. She yet retains ownership of the old home at Potter, Nebraska. The members of her .family are all residents of Medicine Bow, namely: Christian F. R., Rasmus N., Henry, Albert, Alfred and Christina.
Christian Frederick Rudolph Cronberg, the elder of the brothers comprising the firm of Cronberg Brothers, was born December 19, 1869. He was a boy of nearly twelve years when he came to America with his maternal grandfather, R. N. Nelson, who settled in Kansas. However, Christian F. R. Cronberg went to live with his uncle, Adam Gunderson, near Potter, Nebraska, there remaining for five years, when his parents emigrated to America and settled in that vicinity. He had received but limited advantages in the way of education as a boy, but in the school of experience he has learned many valuable lessons, for he possesses keen powers of observation and a retentive mind, so that he has acquired general knowledge far beyond that of the average individual. From his early boyhood he has been engaged in ranch work and obtained a most thorough and practical knowledge of the business in every detail. In this work he spent two winters in California when a young man, thus gaining experience that was both beneficial and instructive. In the latter '8os he came to Wyoming and entered into connection with the sheep industry in a modest way, at first as an employe but subsequently acquiring an interest in the business. He and his brother conducted a sheep business on shares for three years until with a foundation flock of about thirty-four hundred head they formed a copartnership in 1895, since which time their interests have grown in importance and extent until they are exceeded by few in Carbon county and this section of the state. After conducting their interests under partnership relations for nearly twenty-two years they incorporated their business in 1917 under the laws of Wyoming as the Cronberg Brothers, Incorporated, with R. N. Cronberg as the president and C. F. R. Cronberg as vice president. The range property of this firm comprises more than fifty sections in Carbon and Albany counties. Two excellent ranch homes are included, the one known as the South ranch being occupied by R. N. Cronberg, while that known as the home ranch is occupied by C. F. R. Cronberg.
The latter married Estella M. Bennett, of Rawlins, a daughter of J. A. Bennett, one of the pioneer merchants of Carbon county, mentioned elsewhere in this work. In 1915 Mrs. Cronberg passed away, leaving three sons: Frederick Bennett, who was born June 4, 1911; Edwin D., born June 9, 1912; and James Raymond, born August 3, 1913.
In addition to his ranch interests C. F. R. Cronberg is president of the Medicine Bow State Bank, is president of the Virginian Hotel Company that owns the Virginian hotel property at Medicine Bow and is a director of the Medicine Bow Mercantile Company. He is also president of the Medicine Bow Oil Company and is financially interested in the Elk Mountain Trading Company. These relations indicate the enterprise, the public spirit and the progressive character of the man, whose value as a citizen to the community is hardly equalled and surely not surpassed by any other.
In local political matters C. F. R. Cronberg takes the part of a public-spirited citizen who is interested in securing capable men for office, while in state and national affairs his support is invariably given to the republican party. While taking a keen interest in the party's success, he has never sought nor desired office. He contributes. liberally to religious work. Although reared in the faith of the Lutheran church, his financial assistance is not confined to any single denomination.
Rasmus Nicolai Cronberg, president of Cronberg Brothers, Incorporated, was born August 29, 1871, and was a boy of about fifteen years when he came to America with his parents. His connection with ranch work dates back to that time and includes every branch of the business, and there is no part of it with which he is not familiar. As stated in the foregoing, he began in the sheep business with his brother at the very bottom. Since that time his life record has become inseparably a part of the growth and development of the business of which he is now president and toward which he has contributed his full share of effort and intelligent cooperation. His interest in political matters is that of a business man mindful of the welfare of the community and stanchly supporting the republican party at state and national elections because of his firm belief in the value of its principles as factors in good government. His high standing as a business man and citizen attests the straightforward and upright methods that have characterized his relations with his fellowmen. Aside from those already mentioned he has other important interests which have contributed to the development of the district. The worth of the Cronberg Brothers as substantial citizens is most widely acknowledged, for their activities have constituted a most important factor in the material development, the progress and improvement of this section of the state.
