CHARLES W. DOW.
Charles W. Dow, conducting business under the name of the Dow Motor Company at Newcastle and also serving as postmaster of that city, was born in Fayette county, Iowa, on the 29th of February, 1868, a son of George W. and Fannie (Walters) Dow, the former a native of Pennsylvania, while the latter was born in New Jersey. They were married in Illinois and immediately thereafter removed to Fayette county, Iowa. In 1876 they became residents of Red Cloud, Nebraska, where they resided to the time of their demise, the father there following the blacksmith's trade.
Charles W. was educated in the Red Cloud high school, from which he was graduated with the class of 1888. Subsequently he entered upon an apprenticeship to the carpenter's' trade and on completing his term of indenture engaged in contracting and building on his own account. In 1889 he removed to Newcastle, Wyoming, where he took up building operations and continued active in the contracting field until 1913. when he was appointed postmaster of Newcastle and assummed the duties of the position on the 23d of March, 1914. In this official capacity he has since served, making an excellent record by the prompt and faithful manner in which he has discharged his duties, having the work of the office thoroughly systematized. In 1917 he built his present garage and engaged in the automobile business. He has the agency for the Buick and Chevrolet cars and has sold many machines, while at the same time he conducts a large repair department.
In 1892 Mr. Dow was united in marriage to Miss Orpha M. Nelson, of Newcastle, and they have become parents of two children: Pearl R., who is a graduate of the normal school at Spearfish, South Dakota, and is now the wife of Martin Churchfield, of Cambria. Wyoming and Leda B., who is likewise a graduate of the normal school at Spearfish and is the wife of Carl Schmidt, a ranchman of Weston county.
Fraternally Mr. Dow is a Mason, belonging to Newcastle Lodge, No. 13, A. F. & A. M., of which he is a past master. He is also identified with Beaver Lodge, No. 52, I. 0. 0. F., of Newcastle, and with the Woodmen of the World and he and his wife are members of Newcastle Chapter, No. 30, 0. E. S. Politically he is a democrat and for two terms he served as a member of the city council of Newcastle and for twelve years was treasurer of the school board. He is now president of the Newcastle Commercial Club, a connection which indicates his activity and deep interest in public welfare. Mrs. Dow is a member of the Christian church and both are held in the highest esteem, being regarded as among Newcastle's foremost citizens.
