ANDREW OLSON. |
---|
Andrew Olson was born on the 24th of December, 1865, in
Namsos, Norway, a son of Ove and Hanna (Engen) Olson. After
acquiring an education in the common schools of Norway he devoted his
attention to farming and to the lumber business in that country for
two years. In 1886 he crossed the Atlantic to the United States,
landing at New York, whence he made his way almost at once to
Laramie, Wyoming, where he secured employment in the tie pickling
plant of the Union Pacific Company at that place. Thus he entered
upon a connection with the tie business which has continued to the
present time. He has served in every capacity in connection with the
business, from tie hack to that of general manager, and has won
success for himself and those with whom he has been associated in the
industry. In 1894 he organized and for a number of years was general
manager of the Carbon Timber Company, one of the most extensive
producers of ties along the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1916 that
company was succeeded by the Wyoming Timber Company, of which he has
since been general manager. He had entered the live stock business in 1890
and for a number of years was extensively engaged in ranching at Elk
Mountain, where he owned and conducted one of the best cattle ranches
of that section, comprising in the neighborhood of five thousand
acres. This property he disposed of in 1917 and took up his
residence in Laramie, where he now. resides. He started out in the
business world as a young man without a dollar and his activities
have contributed not only to his own success but also have counted as
of great value to the community. He served as president of the Basin
Land & Live Stock Company for some time and for a period was also
president of the Intermountain Telephone Company, while for some
years he acted as president of the Elk Mountain Mercantile Company.
Mr. Olson is one of the prominent business men in his part of the
state and has had much to do in a constructive way with Wyoming’s
development. Mr. Olson was married at Elk Mountain to Mrs. Selma Bruce, by whom he has a son and a daughter, Lewis and Margaret. Fraternally he is identified with Saratoga Lodge, No. 14, A. F. & A. M., and also with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, while in his religious connections he is a Presbyterian. Mr. Olson became a naturalized American citizen in 1892 and has always been a republican, standing solidly for the doctrines of that party. He established the town site of Elk Mountain, Wyoming, in 1906, and served as the first mayor of the town, remaining in that office until he took up his residence elsewhere. He was candidate for presidential elector in 1912 and represented his district in the Wyoming state legislature in 1905 and 1907. A man of the highest standing and one whose record as a business man and citizen is clean, honorable and successful, he is greatly respected by all. |
