Adelbert Baker, of Cheyenne, is chief of the Cheyenne field division of the general land office, in which connection he has jurisdiction in his line over Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota, with special work also in Montana.
A native of Independence, Iowa. Mr. Baker was born on the 29th of June, 1877, his parents being William and Elsie (Baker) Baker, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of New York. Though of the same name, they were not related. The father devoted his life to the occupation of farming and after living for some time in the east removed westward to Iowa and in 1881 became a resident of Nebraska, casting in his lot with the early settlers there. At the time of the Civil war he had responded to the country's call for troops, enlisting in the Fifty-seventh Indiana Volunteer Infantry, with which he remained on active duty until the close of hostilities. The same spirit of patriotic loyalty characterized him in his citizenship throughout his remaining days. His widow survives and there is also a brother of Adelbert Baker living, the latter being a younger child in the family.
Adelbert Baker, after mastering a public school course, which he completed by graduation from the high school, attended the Normal College at Fremont, Nebraska, and was graduated there. Between the periods of his high school and normal school courses, however, he engaged in teaching for two years. He later engaged in clerical work, having pursued a commercial course, and he was employed in various business offices for about two years. In 1898 he entered the government service as a clerk in the United States land office at O'Neill, Nebraska, and later he served as a clerk in the government service at Bismarck, North Dakota, for three months. He afterward went to Helena, Montana, as special agent of the land office at that place and there continued for a year and a half. He next came to Wyoming, where he arrived in October, 1907, when he accepted the position of chief of the Cheyenne field division of the general land office, and in this connection supervises the field work of the United States general land office in the states of Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota, with special work in Montana.
On the 3d of September, 1902, Mr. Baker was married, to Miss Agnes L. Gallagher and they have two sons, Harold A. and George H. Mr. Baker is a devotee of fishing and in fact is fond of various phases of outdoor life. He also greatly enjoys motoring. He is a most reliable government official, loyal to the interests reposed in him and faithful at all times to the duties that devolve upon him.
