Wyoming Room news is on hold until moving is completed sometime later this spring.
Temporary facilities are still upstairs, so come in and do some research.
A BIG thank you to Jacquelyn
Romberg, Karen Woinoski and Carol Carbone for their latest
CD donations. We now have the Sheridan County School Census covering 1895 to 1970 on
microfilm in the Wyoming Room. The LDS Family Search Program is available for use in the
Wyoming Room as-well.
A little more on the recent by-laws change and its bearing on the newsletter. The
newsletter will be published four times per year. Dues must be paid before the new years
first issue or you will miss out on receiving that issue. Anyone paying dues later than
the February meeting will only receive the remaining issues. Dues will be $10.00 per
member, $15.00 for a family membership. I hope this will help explain our distribution
schedule. Any questions for submissions should be directed to Vernita Gordon or Anita
Billingsley.

EARLY PARKMAN, WYOMING HISTORY
taken from account by Elsie S Parkman
printed in Parkman School Annual 1956
While the Burlington railroad was being built through northern Wyoming the last big camp
was made on Twin Creek, which was later homesteaded by Bert Bales. The camp was called Old
Pass. There was one large building used as a Postoffice, Saloon, Hall and Store, and a few
log cabins to make up the town. When the work was completed here, and the move made into
Montana, for some reason no townsite could be obtained at Old Pass. A town was platted by
the Lincoln Townsite Co. and given the name of Parkman after the historian, Francis
Parkman. The town still remains.
Between 1890 and 1895, buildings were moved up from Ranchester. The tie camp there had
been abandoned and although without water supply, Parkman showed possibilities.
In 1898 there was a destructive fire. A saloon on the corner where the present brick
building stands, and two dwellings directly behind it were burned. Then in a few years the
Cottage Saloon, Hotel, livery barn and store were destroyed by fire. The rock building now
owned by Mrs Clark had been built in about 1901. A short time later, D A Diltz built a
lumber yard and home on the property now owned by Don Stedman. His son, George Diltz built
on the same lots. The homes on the highway were built prior to 1910. This addition was
known as the Rose Mattox addition. The blacksmith shop which afterwards became a garage
was built at this time by Arthur Davis.
In 1927 there were so many children living on farms around Parkman that the old frame
one room school building was too small. Bonds were issued for a two room brick building
that was completed that fall. The first teachers in the new building were Mrs Rose Fowler,
who taught the lower grades and Mrs Dorothea Mattox, who had the upper grades. The plan
for this building provided for additional rooms on the north when attendance increased.
The dedication was held on December 10 and there were 35 pupils in the school. 25 in the
lower grades and 10 in the upper grades including high school. The years 1931-33 were the
ones that the school was the largest, having 39 pupils.
Among the old timers before 1900 were W S
Skipton; Dr A T Taggert; Pat Cusick; William Schaubel; E T Polly; E L Dana; Dory Hoffman; Jack Anderson; D A Diltz and Arthur Davis.
Each played an important part in the early development of Parkman.
Since that time the population of Parkman has decreased due to the buying up of the
land by the big cattle companies until the school has only seven pupils at this time.
