In days gone by this church was refered to as "Snuff Chapel" and it is said the name started because the men would peck on their snuff boxes during the services.  It is a custom of men to tap the box gently to loosen the snuff before opening it to "take a rub".  This tapping makes a little peck sound on the tin can.
