The Webster County Birth Records - Register 2 is from the original handwritten book and the first preserved birth record for the county. The original book covering the period 1860 -1886 was destroyed in the courthouse fire of 17 June 1888.  Fortunately the birth records for 1887 & the first half of 1888 had not been entered yet at the time of fire & were being kept on loose pages at the county clerk's home.  Maiden names of mothers were not recorded in Webster County birth records until 1924. Since all births were at home, notice of a new baby was submitted by writing a note to the clerk & if the mother only signed her name to the note, lacking official notice of fathers name - then clerk only recorded mothers name. You should not assume that the birth was illegitimate if fathers name is not listed. (By Patsy H.Weikart)
