Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be under the direction of Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins for Naomi P. Bennett Barrick. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.tomblynfuneralhome.com.  From 26 Apr 2007.

Naomi P. Barrick

Naomi P. Bennett Barrick, 68, a resident of Kerens, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at the home of Nancy and D.J. Rogers.

She was born Jan. 19, 1939, at Beverly, a daughter of the late Ralph “Booge” Bennett and Viola Wiseman Bennett Griffith who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Phillip R. Barrick Jr. of Kerens and Ralph Barrick and wife, Tara, of Pearland, Texas; one daughter, Kathy Lynn Kelly of Elkins; one brother, Bernie Bennett of Elkins; a sister, Norma Hornick, and husband, Fred, of Beverly; eight grandchildren, including Paige Barrick whom she raised following the death of Page’s mother, Diane, Jeff Manolidis and wife, Laura, of Beverly, Chastity Kelley and Alyson Kelley, both of Elkins, Kristie and Shelby Barrick of Pearland, Texas, and Courtney Harris, Noel Church and Dakota Phillips, all of Virginia; five great-grandchildren, Bryce and Gage Manolidis, Micah and Chase Kelly and Jordan Phillips, all of Elkins; two nephews, Tim Hornick and wife, Brenda, of Beverly, Scott Bennett and wife, Joanna, of Tornado; and three nieces, Sherri Marstiller and husband, Cliff, of Elkins, Kim Webley and husband, Edgar, of North Carolina, and Debbie Cullens and husband, Chris, of Ohio.

Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Shiela Diane Barrick; and stepdaughter, Susan Barrick.

Naomi loved children and loved to work. She was a waitress and her good humor and generosity kept her going. She lived in West Virginia, Texas, Missouri and Germany. Her heart and generosity allowed her to care for her six nieces and nephews, Kay, Jimmy and Tommy Stallman, Susie, Barbara and Sara Bennett. Many of her children’s friends still call her “Mom.” Naomi battled breast cancer since 2003 and was diagnosed with lung and liver cancer in August 2006. Although receiving treatments, she was able to stay home surrounded by the family and friends she loved the most. Naomi devoted her life to the service of others. She was a faithful mother who loved her children and foster children fiercely. Although she rarely broke into a smile, her bright eyes often sparkled with amusement and love. She understood the importance of honesty, loyalty, discipline and straightforwardness.

Naomi often said that her life had been hard; these trials made her strong and steady. She dedicated her energy to making others’ lives easier in quiet and often unseen ways. Many will remember Naomi’s untiring care of her daughter, Diane, who suffered for years with cancer, the complications of cancer treatment and then kidney failure. Shortly after Diane’s death three years ago, Naomi was diagnosed with breast cancer. After successful breast cancer treatment, she was diagnosed with a separate lung cancer in August 2006. She fought long and hard to survive, driven by the love of her children and grandchildren. She always remained realistic however, willing to look at a difficult situation, take in the trouble, and keep going anyway.

Once, she told the story of an impatient customer, a senior officer on the military base where she worked, who sat down and complained about every aspect of his breakfast in the canteen. Naomi walked up to him, quietly removed the plate that had barely been touched, and said, “Officer, you mustn’t be too hungry if you didn’t eat this good food.” Those who cared for Naomi knew for sure how hungry she was for life, how much she appreciated every bite of it, and how she wanted to share her feast with others.
