Sheldon W. Hedrick

Sheldon Willard Hedrick, 65, a resident of Whitmer, passed away at 4:08 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at Davis Memorial Hospital, Elkins.

Born June 26, 1942, at Onego, he was the son of the late Willard and Macie Harper Hedrick.

Mr. Hedrick served with the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart.   He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. 

He was employed by the West Virginia Department of Highways for 33 years, where he operated the road grader, retiring in 2005.  After retirement, he kept busy maintaining his Brushy Run Road house and Property and helping many people with chores.  

He attended the Whitmer Church of God.

He married the former Paula Lynn Lambert on June 16, 1972, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Matthew Hedrick of Whitmer and Bobby Hedrick and wife, Tonya, with two daughters, Chelsey and Courtney of Belington; one sister, Bonnie Raines and husband Garland of Onego; and niece, Christina Raines.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 18 with Pastor Steve Bailey officiating.  Interment followed in the Laurel Hill Cemetery near Whitmer where he presentation of the American Flag was made to Paula Hedrick by members of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion.

Rev. David Schrader, Sr., 69

Rev. David Luther Schrader, Sr., 69, of Shippensburg, PA, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, at the Chambersburg Hospital. 

Rev. Schrader was born on June 17, 1938, in Bainbridge, NY, a son of the late Anthony A. and Susan M. (McAfee) Schrader.  

He graduated in 1989 from the Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, OH, with a Masters of Divinity degree and had served as pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Leitersburg, MD, from 1989 until 1994, and was named Pastor Emeritus of the church in 1994 following his retirement.  From 1985 until 1989, he   served as an Associate in Ministry for many congregations in the Franklin area.  Prior to that, he worked with the federal Environmental Protection Agency.  He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Shippensburg, PA. 

He was the husband of Sylvia L. (Bortner) Schrader, with whom he celebrated a 45th wedding anniversary on Nov. 24, 2007.

Also surviving are a daughter, Sandra L. Schrader of Laurel MD; two sons, David L. Schrader and his wife, Rebecca of Fairfax, VA, and Daniel O. Schrader and his wife, Jewel of Visalia, CA; and a brother, Carl F. Schrader of Seneca, SC. 

He also was predeceased by two brothers, Anthony E. Schrader and Paul Schrader.  

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Rev. Schrader will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 22, 2207, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 34 East Orange Street, Shippensburg, PA, with his pastor the Rev. Dr. Brenda J. Kiser officiating. 

At his request his body was donated to the Humanity Gifts Registry in Philadelphia, PA.

Robert D. "Bob" Torrance

Robert Deams "Bob" Torrance, 73, of Upper Tract, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Torrance was born Sept. 8, 1934, in Clinton, NC, and was the son of the late Boney D. and Arola Bell Torrance. 

He retired in 1975 as a bus driver for DC Transit in Washington, DC, and was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.  He was a member of Landes Ruritan Club, American Legion Post No. 30, VFW Post 6454 and the Local 689 Transit Union. 

His wife, Lucille Kimble Torrance, survives.  

Also surviving are a daughter, Sheila Torrance of Harrisonburg, VA; and two sisters, Evelyn Duff of Warsaw, NC, and Georgia Kennedy of Apex, NC.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, T.K. Torrance and William Torrance.

The Rev. Stanley Kile conducted a graveside service Monday at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract with military honors by the VFW Post 6454.

Ackie Van Puffenbarger, 44, of Bridgewater, VA, passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Puffenbarger was born  in Harrisonburg, VA, May 17, 1963, and was the son of Wona Fay (Michael) Puffenbarger of Bridgewater and the late Edwin Paul Puffenbarger.

He worked for Chartwells at Bridgewater College, IGA in Bridgewater and Marshall's Distribution Center in Bridgewater, VA. He was an active member of Bridgewater Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, member of the choir, Sunday School teacher, and on other church committees. He graduated from Turner Ashby High School.  He and his family enjoyed their family cabin in Sugar Grove for a number of years. 

He is survived in addition to his mother by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

A graveside service was held Wednesday at Mount Olivet United Brethren Church Cemetery, Mount Solon, VA with the Rev. Kelly A. Lane officiating.
