Sherman Walker

Sherman Walker, 65, of Brandywine, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

He was born Aug. 11, 1943, at Fort Seybert and was the son of the late Jasper K. Walker and Garline Pearson Walker.

He constructed pipelines in Michigan and Texas, and owned and operated the Shenandoah's Pride milk route in Pendleton County and had been a truck driver for WLR-Pilgrim's Pride and Copley Logging.

"Papa" Walker enjoyed hunting with the boys, riding grandkids on the lawn tractor, collecting and reading Louis L'Amour books, attending community dinners and lawn parties, going to flea markets with "Mama" Walker and preparing hot cooked meals for his beloved dog, Rascal.

On Dec. 24, 1988, he was united in marriage to Beverly J. Greer Walker, who preceded him in death on June 27, 2002.

He is survived by a son, Sherman E. "Eddie" Walker, II; a daughter, Michele and Ricky  Simon of Harrisonburg, VA; step-children, Murl and Mike Robinson of Harrisonburg, VA;  Michele and Rueben Pacleb of Knoxville, TN, Guy and Judy Greer of Bridgewater, VA, Farrel Greer of Sugar Grove, Tim Greer of Beckley, Jon and Stacy Greer of Wheeling, Melissa and Eric Spangler of Knoxville, TN, and Ben Greer of Moorefield; grandsons, Ricky Simon and Brandon and Simon; step-grandchildren, Sarah and Aaron Greer, Carter Perkins, Kelly and Paige Spangler, Chelsie and Brandon Pacleb, Raven Greer, Carly Greer and Cole Walker Greer; five sisters, Catherine Dean of Mount Crawford, VA, Wilda Ritchie of Hinton, VA, Sylvia Lantz of Frederick, MD, Ruth Mitchell of Beverly and Barb Hilton of Franklin; two brothers, Andrew Walker of Broadway, VA, and Dale Walker of Fort Seybert; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were held Saturday, at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Rev. Jerry Smith officiating.  Burial was at the Pine Hill Cemetery at Brandywine.

Kenneth M. Shenk, 60

Kenneth Martin Shenk, 60, of Port Republic, VA, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at Seneca Rocks.

He was born June 11, 1948, at Harrisonburg, VA, and was the son of the late Charles Shenk and Margaret Hawkins Shenk.

He owned and operated Ken's Body Shop and Ken's auto Transport.  He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was a recipient of the purple heart.

On Dec. 27, 1971, he married Joy A. Waybright Shenk, who survives.

Also surviving are one step-daughter, Anita Star Bowers of Fulks Run, VA; one step-son, Jerry Lee Bowers of Seneca Rocks; one brother, Jeffrey Scott Shenk of Elkton, VA; and three step-children.

He was also preceded in death by one brother.

Funeral services were held Friday at the chapel of Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with the Rev. Stanley Kile officiating. Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery at Riverton with military graveside services conducted by members of the Pendleton County Honor Guard.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Vernon L. Mowery, 79

Vernon L. Mowery, 79, of Brook Park, OH, died Dec. 2, 2008.

He was born March 24, 1929, in Franklin, a son of the late Oliver and Gertrude Propst Mowery.

Surviving are a daughter, Donna Ballash and husband, Bill; two grandchildren, Jason and Gregory; siblings, Grace Mowery and Oliver C. Mowery, Jr., both of Upper Tract, and Rebecca Kimble.  He was a dear uncle and friend to many.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Howard Mowery.

Funeral services were held Dec. 6 at the Zabor Funeral Home, Parma, OH.  Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Cleveland, OH. 

Jocelynn Hester, Infant

Jocelynn Rose Hester, infant, died shortly after birth Dec. 6, 2008, at Grant memorial Hospital.

She was a daughter of Aaron Corey and Crystal Ann Enos Hester of Franklin.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two brothers, Dalton and Colton Hester, both of Franklin; grandparents, Deborah Lynn and Leroy Crouse of Brandywine, Judith Ann and Ray Hester of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Charles Richard and Joni Rae Enos of Maryland; and great-grandparents, Doris Rose and Frank Richard Enos of Maryland and Shirley Ann and Robert Kocher of Cumberland, MD.

Funeral services were held Monday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Richard Lantz officiating.  Burial was in Pine Crest Cemetery, Franklin.

Raymond Eckard, 91

Raymond Paul Eckard, 91, of LaBelle, FL, passed away Dec. 2, 2008.

He was born Sep 5, 1917, in Head Waters, VA, son of Claude Eckard and Linnie M. (Simmons) Eckard.

Mr. Eckard was formerly of Sugar Grove and Harrisonburg, VA..

He served in the U.S. Army and earned the rank of Sergeant First Class.  He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict.  In WWII, he served in Europe with General Omar Bradley's 1st Army.  He retired after 21 years of service.  He was also employed at Goddard Space Flight Center fo 18 years as a security officer.  he was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW and a charter member of the World War II Memorial, Washington, DC. 

His wife, Maria Amman Eckard, whom he married in Babenhausen, Hesse, West Germany on July 24, 1952, preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 1994.

Survivors include his sister; Dorothy Arrowood of National Lutheran Home and Villages in Rockville, MD; two nieces, Virginia Tierney of Waynesboro, VA, and Sue Correll of Winchester, VA; a nephew, Don Byers of Spurger, TX; and many friends. 

He also was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Funk; and a brother, Richard Eckard.

Graveside military honors will be held Monday, Dec. 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Akin-Davis Funeral Home, LaBelle, FL  33935.
