Eva Jean (Harper) Thompson, age 76, of 108 Virginia Avenue, Petersburg went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 24, 2011 at her home.

She was born April 21, 1935 in Onego and was a daughter of the late Marvin J. Harper and Nanna Mae (Vance) Harper.

Mrs. Thompson graduated from Circleville High School in 1952 and from Rockingham School of Nursing in 1955 as a registered nurse. She worked as a surgical nurse for a thoracic surgeon in Georgia for four years.

After their children were grown she worked at the Pendleton Nursing Home, Grant Memorial Hospital and Grant County Health Department. She was a member of Living Hope Baptist Church and Grant Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxilary.

She and her husband lived three years in Germany and traveled to many foreign countries while serving 20 years in the United States Air Force.

She was so happy to be chairman of a committee that raised $170,000 to build an addition to the Grant County Nursing Home memory unit.

She loved the Lord with all her heart and soul and her neighbor as herself. Her mission in life was to be a witness for Jesus Christ and she fulfilled it everyday.

Also surviving are one son, Dr. Stephen C. Thompson and wife, Shari of Petersburg, and grandchildren, Rachel, Seth, Marley and Zane; one daughter: Amie B. LaBrozzi and husband David of Glen Rock, PA and grandchildren, Harper and Elijah; two sisters: Edith Harman of Seneca Rocks, Peggy Hedrick of Maysville: several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg with Rev. Mark McAlister and Rev. Larry Cantu officiating. A private burial will be held in the Thompson Family Cemetery near their cabin at Seneca Rocks.

Mr. Olie Alvin Dolly, age 91, of Stephens City, VA and formerly of Seneca Rocks, died Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Lynn Care Center, Front Royal, VA.

He was born April 14, 1920 in Seneca Rocks and was a son of the late Sampson S. Dolly and Rebecca Levina (Self) Dolly.

Surviving are one daughter: Wanda M. Dolly, resident of Central Virginia Training Center, Lynchburg, VA; one brother, Jesse Dolly, resident of Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Juanita and Eunice Dolly; three sisters, Rachel Dolly, Martha Reed and Sarah Hartman; eight brothers, Henson, Edwin, George, Lester, Calvin, Gordon, John and Curtis Dolly.

Funeral service were held Tuesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, with Rev. William Withers officiating. Interment will be in the Dolly Family Cemetery, Seneca Rocks.

Tommy Henry Vint, age 58 of Circleville, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born on November 15, 1953 at Circleville, the son of the lat Patrick Henry (1977) and Laura Hedrick Vint (1996).

Mr. Vint was a 1973 graduate of Circleville High School and a member of the North Fork Church of the Brethren. He worked at Howes Leather Company from 1973-1994 and was employed at Allegheny Wood from 1994-2009 as a Trimmer.

Also surviving are a daughter, Laura Margaret Waybright and husband James of Circleville; a son, Henry Lee Vint of Circleville; four sisters, Eva Lambert and husband John of Circleville, Patricia Vint and companion Bucky Cutlip of Franklin, Lorraine Selleck of Covington, VA, Mable Vint of Franklin; four brothers, Joe Vint and wife Sandy of Circleville, Robert Vint of Circleville, Charles Vint and wife Ruby of Riverton, Roland Vint and wife Betty of Circleville; a grandson, James Cash Waybright; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin with Rev. Daniel Arbogast officiating. Interment will be at Vint Family Cemetery, Circleville.

Olive Ruth (Dove) Armentrout, Harrisonburg, VA, and formerly of Franklin, went to her final home, Sunday morning, November 27, 2011.

Born December 20, 1926, at Mouth of Seneca (Seneca Rocks), she was the oldest of nine children born to the late Ernie B Cooper, Sr. and Daisy Belle (Painter) Cooper.

In 1945 the Circleville High School graduate, along with school pal, Nellie Landes headed to Washington, DC, and Armentrout worked for the FBI. Back to Harrisonburg, VA, she attended and graduated from Pauline's Beauty School where, on July 29th, 1947, she survived the gas explosion, which blew up a whole city block, even shattering windows in Asbury Methodist Church and killing many of her co-workers and patrons, both in the shop and the school which were attached.

After marriage, the young couple moved to Franklin where she did hair and from late 1950s to 1964 managed the Snack Bar at Warner Drive-In Theater in Franklin on 220 North. In between, she sewed (even Barbie Doll clothes), crocheted and maintained a home. Moving to Woodstock, VA in 1965, with her brothers, she not only provided financial backing, but did bookwork for a tire recapping shop, gaining the company an "A" rating with Dunn & Bradstreet. 1967, with her husband working in Washington, DC, the family moved to the Wheaton, MD where Olive found her niche in retail with Drug Fair, in cosmetics. Metro bought their home in 1980, so back to Franklin they went. Too young to retire, she started working at Ben's Department Store and when Family Dollar took over, she stayed, eventually becoming a store manager. At age of 69, with her husband fighting Parkinson's, she retired.

She and husband were both founding members of the Franklin Evangelical United Brethren Church now Walnut Street United Methodist. She is a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, Harrisonburg, VA.

She developed COPD and emphysema due to heavy smoking and later had to be on oxygen. She always said, she'd "like to warn anyone she saw smoking that they needed to quit. If I could stop after all this time, (60+ years) these 'kids' who haven't smoked long can do it."

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Haas, with whom she made her home; granddaughter Olivia Orndorff and her husband, Craig, of Harrisonburg, VA; brothers, Harry Cooper and wife, Diane and Jerry Cooper all of Woodstock,VA and Gene Cooper and wife, Greta of Harrisonburg, VA and sisters Lillian Teets, Jean Bland, Molly Tidwell, & Patricia Dickenson, and dozens of nieces, nephews and great nephews & nieces.

She was also preceded in death by sisters, AnnaBelle Cubbage and Patsy Cooper and brothers, Ernie B. Jr., Jack, Benny, Ray, Worth, Bruce “Chip” & Danny Dove.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Dr. Don Shull, officiating. Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorials may be made to the Harrisonburg Volunteer Rescue Squad or Rockingham Memorial hospital Hospice.

Gladys Lorene Matheny, 69, of Virginia Beach, VA and formerly of Bridgewater, VA passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at Brookdale Senior Living.

She was born on June 12, 1942 in Pendleton County, and was a daughter of Lena Jane (Simmons) Puffenbarger of Bridgewater and the late Charles Emmett Puffenbarger.

Surviving are a son, Mark Matheny and wife Tanya of Virginia Beach, VA; a sister, Norma Rines and husband Richard of Bridgewater, VA; two grandchildren, Joshua Addison Matheny and Meredith Kaitlyn Matheny; a niece Amy Turner and husband David; and a nephew Keith Rines.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, VA, with Pastor Bill Nabers officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Jimmie Vandevender, 87, of Bartow passed away Saturday November 19, 2011 at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

Mr. Vandevender was born May 30, 1924 in Riverton and was the son of the late Ora and Nelia Mae Slayton Vandevender.

Mr. Vandevender was retired from the Forestry Service, he had worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps, he was a US Army Veteran having serviced in both World War II and the Korean War; where he was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, Good Conduct Medal,American Ribbon,European-Africian-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon.

Surviving are two daughters; Betty (Wally) Starks and Peggy (Michael) Smith all of Bartow; two sons, Danny (Peggy) Vandevender of Bartow, and James (Kathleen) Vandevender of Boyer; a sister

Gladys Vandevender of Franklin; a brother, Doll Vandevender of Thornwood; eight Grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews

He was also preceded in death by a daughter Donna; brothers, William “Mack” and Berlin Brown Vandevender; sisters, Carrie Mae Starks, Bessie Marie Vandevender and Mary Louise White

Funeral services were held November 22, the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale with Rev. William Vandevender officiating. Internment followed at the Bennett Cemetery on John’s Run Road with Military Rites by the Pocahontas County Honor Guard.
