W. Lee Myrick

W. Lee Myrick, 55, of Grottoes, VA, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006 at his home, following an extended illness.

Mr. Myrick was born in Memphis, TN, on January 3, 1951, and was a son of Carrie Viola (Hughes) Myrick Denney of Tupelo, MS and the late Ollie Lee Myrick.

He worked in the maintenance department for Town of Grottoes, VA, where he retired in 2003.

He served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War.

He was united in marriage on Aug. 10, 1971 to Debra Lynn (Pence) Myrick, who survives.

He is also survived in addition to his wife and mother by three daughters and sons-in-law, Amanda and Jeremy Raines of Franklin, Becky and Rusty Jenkins of Singers Glen, VA, and Anna and Kendon Sutherland of Brandywine; two sons, Robert Myrick of Broadway and Jason Myrick and his girlfriend Michelle Cushing of Grottoes; six grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters.

A funeral service was conducted at the Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Grottoes, VA, with the Rev. Jim Burns officiating.  Burial followed at the Edgewood Cemetery.

Dr. John Krupski, 87

Dr. John Krupski, 87, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at his home in Avon Lake, OH. 

Born in Lorain, OH, on Sept. 3, 1919, he was the son of the late Sergie and Yedockey Shaluta Krupski. 

He graduated from Lorain High School and attended Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree industrial engineering and a medical degree.  He attended Yale University while in the U.S. Navy and Cornell University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. 

He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and became a fighter pilot, serving on the carriers Enterprise and York Town.  He was in the battles of Midway and Coral Sea. 

After his navy duty, he was briefly employed in the engineering department of Standard Oil in Cleveland, OH. During this time, he applied for and was accepted to medical school at Ohio State.  After graduation from medical school in 1951, he interned at charity Hospital in Cleveland, OH, and then practiced general medicine for three and one-half years in Lorain, OH. 

He was accepted into ophthalmology residency at Cleveland Clinic, which was completed at Cincinnati General Hospital, where he served as chief resident.  He qualified as a fellow diplomat of the Board of Ophthalmology.  He ophthalmology practice was also in Lorain, OH.  He retired in 1985. 

survivors include his wife of 29 years, Linda Burgoyne Krupski, formerly of Upper Tract; two daughters, Lynette Grant of Lorain, OH, and Jennifer Weaver of North Carolina; a son, Brian of Florida; three sisters, Marie Wilson and Eleanor Potocnik, both of Lorain, OH, and Fannie Charles of Elyria, OH; and four grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by a son, John Paul; a brother, Charles; and a sister, Ann Atanasoff. 

A memorial service was held Saturday at the Lake shore United Methodist church, Avon Lake, OH, where he was a member.  The Rev. Nancy Manner, pastor, and the Rev. Mereidith Coleman officiated.  A memorial service and a private committal will be held at Upper Tract at a a later date.  

Gregory Gardiner 

Gregory Burnitte Gardiner, 48, of Franklin, died Nov. 27, 2006, at his residence in Franklin. 

Born feb. 26, 1958, in Harrisonburg, VA, he was the son of Beverly Alma Moats Gardiner of Franklin and the late Calvin Everett Lee Gardiner. 

Mr. Gardiner attended Franklin Elementary school and graduated from Auto Body Mechanic School in Institute. He was a retired truck driver from the Virginia Department of Transportation.  He attended entry Mountain AME Church.  

surviving are one son, Damien Moats of Franklin; two sisters, Ruth Charmyne council of Harrisonburg, VA, and Monica Denise Scott of Staunton, VA; and three brothers, Michael Gardiner, Kent Gardiner and Stacey Gardiner, all of Franklin. 

He also was preceded in death by one brother, Calvin Jeffery Gardiner, and one infant sister. 

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Revs. Jackie Dorsey and Douglas Lewis officiating.  Burial will be in the Moats Family Cemetery, Moyers.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.   

Orrie S. Fisher

Orrie Shobe "Shobie" Fisher, 99, of Fisher, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at her home.

Mrs. Fisher was born May 26, 1907, in Dorcas, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Wilbur Shobe and Lucy Lee Smith Shobe.

She was a schoolteacher at the Grant County Spring Run School for two years. She taught at Hardy County River Side School, and taught fifth and sixth grade at the Durgon School, where she served as principal. She was a member and Sunday school teacher of Moorefield Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the DAR, the Eastern Star, the Colonial Dames 17th Century, the Daughters of the Confederacy and a former member of the Petersburg Garden Club.

Her husband, John Welton Fisher, preceded her in death in 1977.

Surviving are two daughters, Jane Fisher Wilkins of Riverton, and Lucy Fisher West of Fisher; a son, John Welton Fisher II of Morgantown, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pastors Katherine Jackson and Dan Howard conducted the funeral Saturday at the Moorefield Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John’s Scholarship Fund, in care of JoAnn Harman, HC 84 Box 26, Lahmansville, WV 26731 and to the Old Fields Baptist Church, Box 10, Old Fields, WV 26845, or to the charity of choice.

Elmore Funeral Home, Moorefield, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
