Jane Macauley, 91

Jane Hamilton Macauley, 91, an employee at the DC headquarters of the Republican National Committee and trailblazer in the Republican organizations, died NOv. 19 at her home in Falls Church, VA. 

Born in Fort Madison, IA, she attended the local schools and graduated from St. Katherine's School in Davenport, IA, in 1934. 

She was employed as a secretary in the speaker's Bureau of the Republican National Campaign Headquarters in Chicago, IL, during the presidential campaign of 1937 before going to Washington DC to work for the RNC.  After a short tour in the finance division, she was assigned to the women's division rising to assistant to the director.  She was instrumental in the early development of the National Federation of Women's Republican Clubs, organizing and speaking to groups nationwide.  

In 1947, she was named assistant chairman of the Republican National Committee.  At the 1948 presidential convention in Chicago, IL, she was the first party organization woman to address a national convention, which was the first to be broadcast on television.  She traveled widely, organizing regional conferences of organization and club women, speaking to Republican groups nationwide in support of Republican candidates and women's rights, urging women to participate in politics and to run for office. 

In November 1946, she married Robert Wright Macauley, who preceded her in death in September 1992. 

Shortly before the birth of their first child in 1949, she retired to private life.  The Macauleys moved to Vienna, VA, in 1950, where they lived until they moved to Goodwin House West in Falls Church, VA, 1988. 

During their residence in Vienna, VA, Mrs. Macauley was a reporter for several local newspapers. 

As a board member of Friends of the Library she helped bring Fairfax County library services to Vienna, VA.  She was active in the Republican Party and in the town's nonpartisan elections. 

A longtime supporter of the Green Hedges School in Vienna, VA, from which both of her daughters graduated, she served as its business manager from 1956 to 1969.  When the school incorporated in 1967, she became a member of its board of directors and was its chairman for 17 years.  

She also served for 13 years a parish secretary at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Vienna, VA, and was the first woman elected to the parish Vestry. 

From 1976 to 1985, Mrs. Macauley was an administrative assistant to the CIA's deputy director of security, overseeing the introduction of desktop computing into that office's procedures. 

Survivors include two daughters, Jane Macauley Seegar and spouse, J. King Seegar of Franklin, and Martha Adalin Holland and spouse, Archie S. Holland (S/Sgt Ret US Army) of Elizabethtown, KY; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Hamilton Seegar, Robert Macauley Holland and Casey Frederick Holland.  

Christopher Ernst, 80

Christopher "Bud" Frank Ernst, 80, of Moorefield died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, at Love Memorial Clinic in Moorefield of a heart attack.  

Mr. Ernst was born May 10, 1927, in Ashtabula, OH, and was a son of the late Almon Ernst and Emma Harper Ersnt. 

He graduated from Perry High School in Perry, OH, and Kingdom Ministry School.  He was a member of the Moorefield Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for 68 years in Maryland and West Virginia.  He retired from Baltimore County Public School System in Maryland.  

On March 6, 1948, he married Dorothy (Dot) Rella Poling, who survives. 

He is also survived by a sister, Barbara Ernst Holman of Deltona, FL; and a brother, Gordon Ernst of Ashtabula, OH. 

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Benjamin and James Ernst; and a sister, Justina Ernst.  

Minister Hilrey Heckler of Franklin conducted the funeral Saturday at the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg.  

Geneva Simpson, 81

Geneva Tressie Simpson, 81, of Dayton, VA, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 21, 2007, at her home.  She had not enjoyed good health for the past several years.  

Mrs. Simpson was born April 21, 1926, in Pendleton County and was the daughter of the late Willington and Estie Stella NEsselrodt Hedrick. 

She attended Franklin High School.  She had formerly made her home in Rockville, MD, and Harrisonburg, VA, prior to moving to Dayton, VA, in 1979.   She was a member of Potters House Worship Center. 

In August 1961, she married Richard Lee Simpson Sr., who survives. 

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

Also surviving are four sons, David LEe Simpson of Harrisonburg, VA, Richard L. Simpson, Jr., of Front Royal, VA, and Roberto "Roby" Guerra of Harpers Ferry; one daughter, Ina Thatcher of Staunton, VA; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. 

Pastor Dan Garber conducted the funeral Monday from the Chapel of the LIndsey Harrisonburg Fuenral Home. Burial was in the Dayton Cemetery.

J. Richard Dunn, 66

James Richard Dunn, 66, of Upper Tract and formerly of Wikel, passed away Wednesday Nov. 21, 1977, at the home of his daughter in Morgantown. 

Born Aug. 19, 1941, at Wyandotte, MI, he was the son of the late John Cramer and Leona Comer Dunn. 

He was a construction worker. 

His wife, Doris Greenawalt Dunn, survives. 

Also surviving are one son, William "Dickie" Dunn of Northern, VA; three daughters, Kristi Broadwater of Morgantown and Lisa Dunn and Jackie Dunn, both of Roanoke, VA; one brother, Danny Dunn, and wife, Dotty of Greenville; two grandchildren, J.D. and Sydney Broadwater, both of Morgantown. 

Funeral services were held Monday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown.  Burial followed in the Mt. View Cemetery, Wikel. 

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown.   

Coleen Shipley, 74

Coleen Shipley, 74, of Logan, OH, passed away Nov. 25, 2007 at her residence. 

She was born July 26, 1933, in Brandywine to Oak and Ottie J. Hartman. 

Mrs. Shipley was a former aide at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, a member of the Moose Auxiliary in Logan, OH, a member of the Am Vets Auxiliary in Lancaster. 

Surviving are best friend and significant other, Ralph Levering; two daughters, Sharon Woodworth of Logan, OH, and Deborah (William) Woodworth of Kendall, WI; four grandchildren, William (Susan) Woodworth, Donna Jane Woodworth, Melinda Sue (Donald) Rose and Lee Shipley; four great-granddaughters, one great-grandson; and three half sisters, Wilma Lee Hinkle of Marengo, OH, Leatha Eye and Maxine Wymer of Franklin. 

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband, Richard Shipley; one son, Thomas Shipley; two brothers William Hartman and Kenneth Hartman; and one half-sister, Elve Jean McLean. 

There were no services. 

The family suggests donations be made to the Hocking Valley Community Hospital Foundation, PO Box 966, Logan OH, 43138. 

Arrangements were by the Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan, OH.
