Harry Dale “Tootsie” Bland, age 73, of Riverton, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

He was born at Riverton on May 1, 1938, the son of the late Don (Jan 26, 1979) and Tina Huffman Bland (Nov 13, 1973).

Mr. Bland attended Dixie Schoolhouse and was a member of the Riverton United Methodist Church. He was a Farmer.

Surviving are a daughter, Katherine “Kathy” Arbaugh and husband Larry of Harrisonburg, VA; two sons, Michael Bland and wife Lora of Petersburg, Matthew Bland and wife Jaime of Petersburg; two sisters, Ann Thomson of Seneca Rocks, Mary Loan of Bridgewater, VA; four grandchildren, Candy Arbaugh, Cody Bland, April Whetzel, and Tyler Bland; three great-grandchildren, Clifton Arbaugh, Adam Whetzel, and Marissa Arbaugh.

He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Carroll, Albert, Ray, Billie, Jackie, Bobby; two sisters, Katherine Suenell Bland and Lucille Teter.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Riverton United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Baer, Jr. and Rev. Greg Bland officiating. Interment will be at the Bland Family Cemetery, Riverton.

Adam Kee Evans, age 83, of Maysville, WV died Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home.

He was born March 20, 1928 in Upper Tract, and was a son of the late Ernest Evans and the late Delphia (Alt) Evans.

Mr. Evans was a timberman and had worked for the City of Petersburg. He later worked for the West Virginia Department of Highways and retired from Atlantic State Tree Expert Company.

Surviving are five sons, Robert K. Evans and wife, Cindy of Maysville, Timothy S. Evans of Maysville, Roy W. Evans of Upper Tract, Randy L. Evans of Lahmansville, Larry W. Evans and wife, Beth of Cabins, six grandchildren, Matthew and Julie Evans, Nicole "Nikki" Evans, Brandon Evans, Keith Evans and Angie Ford, John Cochran and Sheila Weese; three Great Grandchildren: John -Michael Hottinger, Dominic Ryin Ford and Kevin Evans; two sisters: Lucy Evans of Harrisonburg, VA Judy Lynn of Poolsville, MD; one brother, Donald R. Evans of Maysville; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Terry Anthony Evans and infant John Adam Evans; one grandson, Michael H. Hottinger and two brothers, Eugene "Sammy" Evans and Paul J. Evans.

Barbara Diane Schomer, 69, of Petersburg, died on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 in Centreville, VA while receiving hospice care.

She was a retired from Mt. Lebanon High School English teacher and a member the Nationall Speleological Society, the Pittsburgh Grotto, Wissahickon Nature Club, the Botanical Society of Western Pennsylvania and the Pendleton County Historical Society. She was recently involved in volunteer work in Everglades National Park helping to inventory the lichens there. A newly discovered lichen, Calopadia schomerae, is named after her.

Surviving are her husband, Bruce “Bru” Randall, two daughters, Mary Kay and Sharon McCaffrey, three sisters, Pamela Russo, Wendy Pacific and Roxanne Shute; one brother, Philip Schomer; four grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on December 3 at 11:00 a.m. the Beinhauver Funeral Home, McMurray, PA 15317.

William Lester Smith Jr, 85, Harrisonburg, VA, died November 20, 2011 at Oak Lea Nursing Home, Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Smith was born on December 9, 1925 in Circleville, West Virginia and was the son of the late William Lester and Beulah Gladys Calhoun Smith Sr.

He served in the United States Marie Corp during World War II from 1943 until 1945. He owned and operated Hill Top Grocery from 1953 until 1971. He worked at Town and Country Motors in Harrisonburg and later owned and operated Quality Corner Automotive in Bridgewater. Mr. Smith was a past president of the Virginia Independent Automobile Dealers Association.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #144 in Franklin, and the Harrisonburg Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. 450 in Harrisonburg. He continued to love cars, he enjoyed horseback riding and bowling and was very proud of being born and raised in West Virginia. Mr. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg.

Also surviving are three children Reggie Smith and wife Pam, Port Republic; Jill Bowman and husband Eddie, Harrisonburg and Jody Pugh of Harrisonburg, VA; two sisters, Rebecca Keller, Lexington, VA; Katherine

Nelson, Goose Creek, SC; one brother, Conway Smith, Circleville, WV; eight grandchildren, William Smith and wife Tara; David Smith, Addison Bowman and wife Tiffany; Dustin Bowman and wife Kelly; Laura Bowman, Kaitlyn Bowman; Micah Branson and husband Chad; John William Pugh; five great grandchildren, Brenna Smith,

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son, Ricky L. Smith in January 2004; two brothers, Richard and Raymond Smith; and a sister, Mary Huffman.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, Harrisonburg, VA with Dr. John F. Sloop and Dr. Kyle W. Key officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Philip Wimer, 83, of Harrisonburg, Va., died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, at Emeritus Senior Living in Harrisonburg, VA.

He was born July 20, 1928, at Franklin, W.Va., and was a son of the late Alfred Taylor Wimer and Anna Rebecca Vandevander Wimer.

Mr. Wimer had worked at Max Ruddle’s Sawmill in Franklin and retired from Walker Manufacturing after 33 years. He was a member of Garbers Church of the Brethren.

Also surviving are two daughters, Sharon S. and her husband, Wampler Jr. Hottinger of Dayton, VA., Debbie and her husband, David Hartman of Harrisonburg, VA.; one son, Shirl O. (and his wife, Ann) Wimer of Brandywine; one sister, Lucy Bennett of Petersburg; one brother, Ambers and his wife, Frances Wimer of Cherry Grove; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ocie Wimer, Walter Wimer, Marvin Wimer and Martin Wimer; and two sisters, Regina Arbaugh and Sally Greathouse.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin., with Pastor Walt Cruell officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.
