Roger Lee Simmons

Roger Lee Simmons, 57, of Harrisonburg, VA. died Friday,Nov.14,2008 at the UVA Hospital in Charlottesville,VA.

He was born Dec.29,1950,at Franklin and was the son of the late Robert L. Simmons and Tressie Verner Simmons.

He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and had worked at Rockingham Concrete.

He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Earl (Patsy) Smith of Franklin,, Carolyn Simmons of Fairmont and Linda Higgins of Delray Beach, FL; and a number of nieces,  nephews and cousins.  

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ona Dale Simmons and Jeffery Simmons.  

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the chapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. Shyrl Smith officiating.  Burial was at Thorn Creek Memorial Gardens at Moyers. 

Sam Grapes, 99

Sam Grapes, 99, of Petersburg died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 at the Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. 

He was born Feb. 14, 1909, in Moorefield and was the son of the late Isaac Newton Grapes and Hester Ann (Wilson) Grapes. 

Mr. Grapes retired from Westvaco Paper Company in Luke, MD, in 1974.  He was Brethren by faith. 

His wife, Laura Catherine (Bennett) Grapes, preceded him in death on April 14, 1984.  

He was the last member of his immediate family.

Surviving are five sons, Wayne Grapes of Riverton, Larry Grapes and Donnie Grapes, both of Petersburg, Harold Grapes of Greenbelt, MD, and Raymond Grapes of Elizabethtown, PA; two daughters, Shirley Harman of Petersburg and Faith Meadows of Harrisonburg, VA; 26 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. 

He was also preceded in death by two infant sons, Ronnie Grapes and Floyd Grapes; two infant daughters, Sylvia Grapes and Bonnie Grapes; one step-daughter, Ruby Virginia Burns; two grandchildren, Steven Burns and Kevin Grapes; one brother, Walter Grapes; and one sister, Freda Wilson. 

Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev. Edgar Null officiating.  Burial was in the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield. 

Memorials may be made to the Grant County Nursing Home, 27 Early Avenue, Petersburg, WV  26847.  

Diana "Sue" Hinkle

Diana "Sue" Hinkle, 54, of Riverton died Nov. 16, 2008, at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA. 

Born May 16, 1954, at Onego, she was the daughter of the late Fred Charles and Beulah Long Cook. 

She was a homemaker and attended Circleville High SChool and North Fork Baptist Church. 

Her husband, Rex Allen Hinkle, Sr., preceded her in death on March 17, 1989. 

Surviving are two sons, Rex Allen Hinkle, Jr. and wife, Lisa of Harman, and Joshua Hinkle of Cabins; five sisters, Mary Frances Thompson and husband, Stanley, Rose Ann Sites and husband, Carl, and Betty Louise Hite, all of Riverton, Kathleen Thompson of Petersburg, and Eva Jean Clark and husband, Charles of Cabins; Charles Edward Cook and wife, Brenda of Upper Tract, David Dwight Cook and wife, Brenda of Riverton and Bradley Earl Cook and wife, Lesley of Harrisonburg, VA; and one grandson, Brian Hinkle of Cabins.  

An infant brother, William, also preceded her in death. 

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg, with the Rev. Mark McAllister officiating.  Burial was in North Fork Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial can be made to the Mathias-Baker Rescue Squad.   

Neil Boggs, 73

Neil Fitzwater Boggs, 73, of Vienna, VA, and formerly of Franklin, died Nov. 9, 2008, at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA, following a long illness. 

HE was born Dec. 13, 19034, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was the son of Brooke McCoy Boggs and Mary Elizabeth Fitzwater Boggs.  

He was retired after working in the Washington, DC, area for various employers including the Chrysler Corporation, the County of Fairfax, FNMA, FHLMC and Department of Defense contractors.

He served two years in the U.S. Army and was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College and West Virginia University (MBA). 

Following a memorial service in Northern Virginia, a graveside service will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, with Rev. Kevin Hand officiating.  

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1920-H Medical Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA  22801. 

Local funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.
