Margie Mae Alder, 87

Margie Mae Dahmer Alder, 87, of Ruxton Healthcare Center, formerly Oak Hill Center in Staunton, VA  died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003. 

Mrs. Alder was born May 15, 1916, in Franklin and was the daughter of the late Preston and Mary Hevener Dahmer. 

She attended school in Franklin and lived in Harrisonburg, VA, most of her life. 

In 1942, she married George B. Alder, who preceded her in death in 1966. 

She is survived by three sons, H. Boyd Alder of Fishersville, VA, Ernest Preston Alder of Harrisonburg, VA, and Michael Lee Johnson of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Beverley Payne of Crewe, VA; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. 

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Luther Dahmer, Ira Dahmer and "Willie" Dahmer; and one sister, Jesse Nesselrodt.

 The Revs. Frank Hall and Ray Deese conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA.  Burial followed at Herwin Chapel Cemetery.

Helen Ruth Helmick, 72

Helen Ruth (Gum) Helmick, 72, of Mount Crawford, VA, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at her home in Mount Crawford, VA, following a long illness. 

She was born on Friday, April 17, 1931, in Monterey, VA, and was a daughter of the late Charles D. and Minnie Catherine (Simmons) Gum. 

She attended the Freedom Baptist Church.  Mrs. Helmick retired from Rocco and had worked at Metro Pants and Shen Tailoring. 

On Aug. 29, 1953, she was united in marriage to Benjamin Helmick, who died on Aug. 20, 1997.

She is survived by two sisters, Mattie Rexrode of Franklin and Dorothy Hedrick of Blue Grass, VA; and one brother, June gum of Springfield, VA.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Samples; four brothers, Arch Gum, French Gum, Charles Ray Gum and William Gum.

A funeral service was conducted on Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Johnson Funeral Service chapel, Bridgewater, VA, with Pastor  Doug Henry officiating.  Burial followed in the Rest Haven Cemetery, Harrisonburg, VA.  

Bonnie Jean Moats

Bonnie Jean Moats, 45, Franklin, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at Obici Hospital in Suffolk, VA.

Mrs. Moats was born march 25, 1958, in Canton, OH, and was the daughter of the late Evelyn Parretta. 

She was a nurse's aide at Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin.

 Her husband, Kenneth Jeffrey Moats of Franklin, survives. 

Also surviving are four daughters, Michelle Parretta of Frnaklin, Dannielle Campbell of Harrisonburg, VA, Kendall Reel of Upper Tract and Jeanette Beiler of Huntland, TN; five grandchildren, Chelsea Moats, Michael Evan Smith, Amir Jabeur, Kenzie Rohrbaugh-Reel and Preston Beiler; and three unborn grandchildren "in babyland". 

the Rev. Bob Johnson conducted the funeral 7 p.m. Saturday at Franklin Independent Baptist Church in Franklin.  Burial was in the Cyprus Chapel Church Cemetery in Suffolk, VA.

Johnnie W. Armentrout

Johnnie W. Armentrout, 76, of Franklin, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at his home. 

Mr. Armentrout was born Aug. 3, 1927, on Track Mountain in Ruddle, and was a son of the late George Amos Armentrout and Maggie Jane Pennington Armentrout. 

He was a poultry grower and a truck driver for Ruddle Lime for 25 years.  He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Ruddle Presbyterian Church. 

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lamb Armentrout, whom he married Jan. 29, 1981; five daughters, Linda and husband Paul Shanholtz of Charles Town, Mary Catherine Luce of Shepherdstown, Loretta and husband Dwaine Helman; Patricia and husband Arthur Kimble; Janice and husband Jerry Kimble all of Franklin; a son Johnny R. and wife Elaine Armentrout of Front Royal, VA; four stepsons, Darrell Meadows of Upper Tract; Bill Puffenbarger of Craigsville, VA; Robert Bitzer of Hinton, VA, and Michael Bitzer of Sugar Grove; one stepdaughter, Cindy Puffenbarger of Sugar Grove; one brother William "Bill" Armentrout of Elkins.  Eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren. 

 He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. 

Pastor Rob Borrow conducted the funeral at 1 p.m. Monday at the Kimble Funeral Home.  Burial was at  Oaklawn Cemetery at Franklin with Military Graveside Services by Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Bessie E. Hoover

Mrs. Bessie Elizabeth Hoover, 80, of Moyers, WV, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA. 

She was born Aug. 30, 1923, in Blue Grass, VA, and was the daughter of the late Clarence Waybright and Mary E. Wimer Waybright. 

She had worked as a cook at Franklin Elementary School, retired from Hanover Shoe Company after 22 years, and was a Pendleton community Care Homemaker for 10 years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Sugar Grove VFW Post 9666 Ladies' Auxiliary.  She enjoyed singing in many different local music groups. 

On Jan. 23, 1943, she married Harry O. " Buster" Hoover, who survives. 

Also surviving are two sons,  Delbert Olin Hoover of Moyers, and Roger D. and wife Donna Hoover of Franklin, one sister, Susie M. Rexrode of Moyers, two brothers, Delbert Waybright of Elkins, and Martin Waybright of Fayetteville, PA, one grandson, Tim and wife Jennifer Hoover of Bridgewater, VA; one granddaughter, Delberta and her husband Steven Lee Rhinehart of Grottoes , VA; one great- granddaughter, Allison Elizabeth Hoover of Bridgewater, VA, one great-grandson, Dale Rhinehart of Grottoes, VA, and a number of nieces and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. 

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at St. John's Lutheran CHurch in Moyers, with Rev. Dr. Cecil D. Bradfield officiating. Burial was in the Rexrode-Hoover Cemetery at Moyers.

Aaron Lee Davis, 24

Aaron Lee Davis, 24, of Bartow, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2003.  

Mr. Davis was born September 2, 1979, at Elkins. 

Surviving are his mother, Sharon Miller of Garretsville, OH; father roger Lee Davis of Bartow; brothers Israel R. Davis of Pittsburgh, PA, Myron J. Davis of Bartow; and grandmother, Bonnie Sipes of Bartow.  

Funeral arrangements were incomplete at this time and the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale was in charge of arrangements. 

Lloyd T. McCroden, 92

Lloyd T. McCroden, 92, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, in Bridgewater, VA. 

Mr. McCroden was born August 21, 1911, in Cleveland, OH, and graduated from Baldwin Wallace College in 1934.  He was a Navy Lieutenant on World War II.  After retirement in 1976, he moved to Ormond Beach, FL, and traveled the state playing in tennis tournaments. 

He is survived by one daughter, Marcia Kirk of Franklin; two sons, Ronald McCroden of Ormond Beach, FL, and Bill McCroden of Jacksonville, FL*; two grandsons, Kris and Justin Kirk; and one great-grandson, Bryce Kirk. 

Interment was at Volusia Memorial Park in Ormond Beach, FL. 

Local funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Opal Gae Berg, 82

Opal Gae Vance Berg, 82, of Petersburg, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at her home. 

Mrs. Berg was born June 5, 1921, in Onego and was a daughter of the late John Alonzo Vance and Elsie Mallow. 

She was a homemaker and a Baptist. 

On March 20, 1942, she married Dempsey Roosevelt Berg, who preceded her in death Sept. 30, 1997. 

She is survived by eight daughters, Florena Gae Allen of Upper Marlboro, MD, Linda Belle Berg and Shirley Mae Poe, both of Glen Burnie, MD, Elieen Lee Berg of Killeen, TX, Maxine Marie Mitchell and Lora Lynn Auville, both of Petersburg, and Pamela Ann Bowser and Paula Jane Gatton, both of Baltimore, MD; three sisters, Violet Kimble of Upper tract, Faye Chewning of Seneca Rocks and Arvella Turner of Onego; a brother Kenneth "Bunt" Vance of Baltimore, MD; 18 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by four sons, Randy Roosevelt berg, Roger Allen Berg, Dempsey Delano Berg and Noah Frederick Berg; three grandchildren; Crystal Auville, Angel Gatton and Roger Berg; one daughter, Joyce Redmond; and four brothers, Eldon Vance, Guy Vance, Glenn Vance and Don Vance.

The Revs. Ted Anderson, John Moyers andCalvin Redman condcuted the funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at the Berg family cemetery in Maysville. 

Memorial donations may be made to a fund for grandson, Michael Berg.  

Carl W. Mitchell, 81 

Carl W. Mitchell, 81, of Upper Tract, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003 at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg. 

Mr. Mitchell was born Nov. 9, 1922, in Kline and was a son of the late Albert I. Mitchell and Lillie Ratliff Mitchell.

He was a school bus driver and retired after 32 years of service.  He was a farmer and was also employed by Hott's Feed Mill for 20 years.  He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the South Mill Creek Church of the Brethren. 

 Survivors include his wife, Macie Armentorut Mitchell, whom he married April 30, 1943; two sons, Ralph Mitchell and Roger Mitchell, both of Upper Tract; four sisters, Irene Strawderman of Dorcas, Ardella Thorne of Moorefield, Arvella Greenawalt of Upper Tract, and Beulah Wegman of Mount Storm; two brothers, Earl Mitchell of Harrisonburg, VA, and Forrest Mitchell of Alexandria, VA; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

He was also preceded in death by  one daughter, Thelma Smith; and by two sisters. 

Pastor Randy Ours conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Thursday at South Mill Creek Church of the Brethren.  Burial was at the Kline Cemetery in Upper Tract

Fern R. Wintermyre, 83

Fern Rexrode Wintermyre, 83, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, Oak Lea Nursing Home. 

 Mrs. Wintermyre was born Thursday, June 24, 1920, in Pendleton County and was the daughter of Loy and Annie Eye Rexrode. 

She lived in Pendleton County until she graduated from Franklin High School.  Soon after graduation, the family moved to Ottobine, VA. 

She married Tom Wintermyre, Nov. 3, 1939.  They lived in the Rockingham County area since.  She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker.  She was a member of the Dayton United Methodist Church. 

Surviving in addition to her husband, are three children; James (Karen) Wintermyre of Bend, OR, Jane (Dan) Bradford of Winston-Salem, NC, and Donna Bodkin (Rod) of Dayton, VA; three brothers, Vernon Rexrode of Fishersville, VA, Ray Rexrode and Robert Rexrode, both of Waynesboro, VA; one sister, Norma Mathis of Fishersville, VA; and eight grandchildren, james M. Wintermyre, Jr., Asheley, Derrick and Jocelyn Bodkin, JEnny, Patrick Erin and Zach Bradford.   

The Rev. Steve Bird conducted a memorial service 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dayton United Methodist Church.
