Doris D. Rexrode

Mrs. Doris Day Rexrode, 84, of Sugar Grove, West Virginia, died Sunday, November 13, 2011 at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

She was born November 20, 1926 at Franklin, West Virginia and was the daughter of the late Clay Day and Myrtle Mae Lewis Day.

A 1944 graduate of Franklin High School, Doris was a homemaker, and along with her late husband, operated a poultry and beef cattle farm for fifty years. She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church, Sugar Grove V.F.W. Post #9666 Ladies Auxiliary and the Sugar Grove Senior Citizens.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law - Carolyn R. & Eddie Smith of Staunton, VA; one son and daughter-in-law, James E. "Jimmy" & Linda Rexrode of Brandywine; one sister and brother-in-law. Loris & James Wilfong of Bridgewater, VA; two grandchildren, Candy Nicolls of Glen Allen, VA, Evan Smith & his wife, Jennifer of Bunker Hill, WV; and one great-granddaughter, Delaney Smith .

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ray Day, Dolph Day and Page Day, two sisters, Marie Day and Gaye Owens and one half-brother, Earl Day.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Seminarian Jean Caudill and Rev. Leon Hevener officiating. Burial will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Mabel Eye Simmons, 99, of Brandywine, died Friday, November 11, 2011 at Pendleton Manor in Franklin, West Virginia.

She was born December 9, 1911 at Fort Seybert, and was the daughter of the late Preston Eye and Mary Catherine Propst Eye and the stepdaughter of the late Anna Eye.

Mrs. Simmons was a student at the Oak Flat School through eighth grade and worked at the family store at Oak Flat. She was a life member of Brandywine Christian Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Juanita Slusher and her husband, Leo, of Franklin, WV; one son, Jerry Simmons and his wife, Peggy, of Harrisonburg, VA; two grandchildren, Dr. M. Catherine Slusher and her husband, Don Flegel, Jennifer Soth and her husband, Kosal; five great-grandchildren, Drew Clements, Julie Clements, Macie Clements, Ayden Soth, Olivia Soth; two nieces, Phyllis McCleaf and her husband, Jim Winnie Williams and her husband, Dick and beloved family members, Donald, Matthew and Aspen Phares and Vicki Shortt, Mark Williams, James, Jennifer and Grayson McCleaf, Mary, Don, Nathan and Leann Spurgeon, Paul Clayton Ruth Shaver.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Marguerite Miller, one niece, Constance (Connie) Clayton and one great-grandson, David Clements.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at the Brandywine Christian Church at Brandywine, with Pastor Larry Danner officiating. Burial will be at the Pine Hill Cemetery at Brandywine.

Mrs. Frieda R. Propst, 89, of Petersburg and formerly of Franklin, died Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

She was born September 23, 1922 at Dorcas, and was the daughter of the late Thomas Reel and Erma Blanche Judy Reel.

Mrs. Propst was a retired secretary and a member of Faith Lutheran Church. She was active in various civic organizations and clubs in Grant and Pendleton County including Franklin B.P.W., Women of the ELCA and the Farm Womens' Club.

Her first husband, Rollin Cosner, preceded her in death on December 18, 1971 and by her second husband, Kenneth B. Propst preceded her in death on May 24, 2006.

Surviving are one daughter, Judy M. Moreland and her husband, Stephen of Middleburgh, NY; two sisters, Virginia Fitzpatrick of Newark, DE, Dixie Halsey of Newark, DE; one sister-in-law, Florence Reel of Newark, DE; one brother, Bob Reel of Starks, LA; Three grandchildren, Stephanie Fuller & her husband, Kevin Andrea Moreland & her fiance, Dan Fulmer, Randall Moreland & his wife, Kerry; Two great-grandsons, Kevin Fuller and Derrick Fuller.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., at the Chapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin, West Virginia with Pastors Craig and Wendy Richter officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin, West Virginia.

Mr. Morgan was the salutatorian of Colonial Beach High School, Class of 1948. He served as chaplain for the United States Army in the Korean War. In 1989 he retired from C & P Telephone Company after 34 years of service. He was a Baptist by faith and was a member of AFL-CIO Local #2108.

Also surviving are two daughters, Claudia Norma Evick of Statesville, NC, Kathleen Yvonne Lathrop of Franklin; two sons, Gordon Thomas Morgan and wife Bonnie of Hampstead, NC, Andrew Elwood Morgan and wife Amy of Richmond, IN; a sister, Gladys Long of Norfolk, VA; two brothers, Frank William Morgan of Benson, NC, James Morgan of Richmond, VA; 11 grandchildren, Erin Mitchell and husband Adam, Eric Morgan, Adam Morgan, Kim Simon and husband Edward, Brian Evick and wife Janna, Jennifer Cook and husband Charles, Jared Lathrop, Colin Morgan, Emily Morgan, Brandon Morgan, Josh Morgan; 7 great-grandchildren, Tyler Simon, Megan Simon, Brandon Simon, Chloe Evick, Ryleigh Cook, Barrett Cook, and Blaine Cook.

A celebration of life was held Tuesday at the Living Faith Church, Franklin with Pastor Steve Teter and Pastor Brad Mitchell officiating. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery, Franklin, with Military Graveside Services provided by Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Jesse Whitfield Cowger, 88, passed away peacefully at River Oaks Nursing Home, Lafayette, LA, on Nov. 11, 2011.

Mr. Cowger had lived in Lafayette, LA, for the past eight years. He served in the Army in World War II. He loved his family, including nieces and nephews and in turn was loved by all who knew him. He enjoyed woodworking, visiting with neighbors, helping out whenever he could and spending time with his two puppies, Gracee and Beau. He was known for his smile and his good nature.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda C. Boudreaux of Lafayette, LA; two sons, Ronald Cowger of Garden Valley, CA, and Mark Miller of Folansbee; six grandchildren, Evangeline, Chantelle and Elizabeth Boudreaux, Nicholas Cowger, Margaret Fergerson and Gretchen Miller; three great-grandchildren, Anjolie Cantu, Lidia Miller and Payton Fergerson; one brother, Harold Cowger; and one sister, Mary Shelkett.

He was also preceded by two brothers, Raymond Cowger and Edward Cowger; and three sister, Catherine Shelkett, Viola Zielor, and Bessie Cristy.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday at the Geenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Louisiana with Tom Power officiating.

The son of the late August Gwynn Schultz and Mary Allison Calder Schultz, he was born February 3, 1920 in Richmond, Va.

Dr. Schultz was a graduate of McGuire's University School of Richmond, Hampden-Sydney College, and the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his residency in OB/GYN at the Medical College of Virginia and was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a standout athlete in both football and baseball at McGuire's and at Hampden-Sydney.

Dr. Schultz moved from Richmond to Harrisonburg in 1950 to be the first obstetrician between Winchester and Staunton, also serving patients in Virginia counties to the east and Pendleton County in West Virginia. He established a private practice first in the National Bank office building on the corner of Market and Main, and later moved to the Medical Arts Building on South Main Street. He retired from clinical practice in 1985.

Dr. Schultz served in the U.S. Navy during both WWII and the Korean conflict. He had shipboard assignments in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets in addition to several shore-duty assignments.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served several times as an elder and deacon. Dr. Schultz's other community activities included the Isaac Walton League, the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society, and the Boy Scouts.

An avid outdoorsman, his hobbies were many, and among his favorites were camping with family, reading, hunting, fishing, and sailing at their "second home" in Cove Colony, Lancaster, Va., on the Rappahannock River.

Surviving are three children, Dr. Robert G. Schultz Jr. and his wife, Rebecca, of North Carolina; daughter, Beverly J. Schultz of Oregon; daughter, Julie A. Fuller of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Bethany S. Schmidt, Robert G. Schultz III, Karl A. Schultz and Kelsey M. Schultz; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m.in the Sunnyside Retirement Community Chapel in Harrisonburg.

He was born in Baltimore, MD on September 11, 1942, the son of the late LeRoy Thomas Crouse, Sr. and the late Minnie Elizabeth Diggs Crouse Lorrentson.

Mr. Crouse was a graduate of Pimlico High School, was a member of the Church of the Brethren, and was a Veteran of the US Army and National Guard. He was a retired Sign Painter and a Pest Control Technician.

Surviving are two daughters, Dawn Hott of Wardensville, WV, Cathy Frock and husband Kenneth of Westminister, MD; a step daughter, Crystal Hester and husband Aaron of Franklin; two sons, LeRoy Thomas Crouse III and wife Katherine of Biglerville, PA, Adam Crouse and wife Kathleen of Hampstead, MD; a step-son, Charles Enos and wife Gloria of Taneytown, MD; a sister, Carole Minnick and husband Thomas of Littlestown, PA; two brothers, Art Bernard Crouse of Ft. Seybert, WV, Marty Crouse and wife Laura of Brooksville, FL; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Pastor Brian Headley officiating. Interment will be at Pine Crest Cemetery, Franklin, with military graveside services provided by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard. Vada Alice Alt Evick, age 75 of Franklin, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2011 at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

She was born at Pansy, WV on April 8, 1936, the daughter of the late James Frank and Stella Emily Florence Alt.

Ms. Evick was a 1955 graduate of Petersburg High School and was a member of the Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren. She retired from Pendleton County Schools after working for 23 years as a Teacher's Aide.

Surviving are three sons, Billy Evick and Wife Cindy of Franklin, Bobby Evick and Wife Julie of Franklin, Bradley Evick and Wife Teresa of Harrisonburg, VA; two Sisters, Audrey Blosser, Martha Evans, both of Richmond, VA; two Brothers, William S. Alt of Petersburg, WV, Kermit Alt of Bel Air, MD; seven grandchildren, Megan, Hannah, Preston, Grant, Natalie, Benjamin, Heidi; and one great-\grandson, Mason.

She was also preceded in death by six brothers, an infant, Charles P., O. Paul, June, Orville, Roger Lee; and a sister, Myrtle Berg.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Pastor Pat Godfrey officiating. Interment will be at Ced Hill Cemetery, Franklin.
