W. Walton Shrader 

William Walton Shrader, 71, of Franklin, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at his home. 

Mr. Shrader was born June 3, 1935, in Franklin and was the son of the late Ocie J. Shrader and Tyva DePriest Shrader. 

He was a well-known sheep farmer and had sheared sheep for 48 years.  He graduated from Franklin High School in 1953.  He was a member of the Smith Creek Church of the Brethren, the Franklin Lions club and the Franklin volunteer Fire Department for 30 years. 

On May 26, 1984, he married Ruth Moyers Shader, who survives. 

Also surviving are a daughter, Etha Mae Finigan of Harrisonburg, VA; three step-daughters, Shirley Kramer of Melbourne, Australia, Lisa Lewellyn of Rice, MN, and Brenda VanMeter of Franklin ;a son, William Douglas Shrader of Jefferson City, MO; a step-son, Danny Wimer of Franklin; a sister, Mary Martha Moyers of Franklin; and four gradnchildren. 

He also was preceded in death by one step-son and one brother.  

The Rev. Max Fisher and Pastor Daryl Ritchie conducted the funeral Thursday at Smith Creek Church of the Brethren.  Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin by Kimble Funeral Home, Franklin.

Cynthia M. Hicks, 45 

Cynthia  M Hicks, 45 of Fredericksburg, VA, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006 at the Medical College of Virginia. 

She was born September 26, 1961 in Harrisonburg, VA, a daughter of Russell L., Sr., and Donna (Perry) McQuain of Moyers.

Mrs. Hicks was a homemaker. 

Surviving in addition to her parents are two daughters, Shonna and Lillie Hicks of Fredericksburg, VA; three sons, J.R. Stone of Fairfax, VA, Jason Hicks of Stafford, VA, and Samuel Hicks of Fredericksburg, VA; three grandchildren, Isabelle "Izzy" Hicks, Analease Hicks and Colin Barron; a brother, Russell L. McQuain, Jr., of Woodbridge, VA; a sister Dwala McQuain of Moyers; a niece, Sara McQuain; and two nephews, Chason McQuain and Dustin Rhinehart. 

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday at Obaugh Funeral home in McDowell, VA, by the Rev. Dave Boger. Burial will be in Totten Chapel Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.   

Gloria Fay Alt, 56

Gloria Fay Alt, 56, of Upper Tract, died Wednesday Nov. 8, 2006, at her home.

Mrs. Alt was born May 1, 1950, in Stonega, VA, and was the daughter of the late David Junior and Grace Huff Hampton.

She attended South Mill Creek Church of the Brethren in Upper Tract. 

Surviving are a son, James E. Alt of Upper Tract; a daughter, Jackalyn Tawney of Westernport, MD; a sister, Charlotte All of Wildwood, FL; two brothers, Louie Hampton of Dominion Republic and Harvey Oza Hampton of Upper Tract; and six grandchildren. 

Pastor Craig Howard conducted the memorial service Sunday at Brake Church of the Brethren in Dorcas.

Leona S. Hoover, 84

Leona Simmons Hoover, 84, of Falls Church, VA, and formerly of Harrisonburg, and Doe Hill, VA, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Falls Church. 

Mrs. Hoover was born Nov. 26, 1921, in Moyers and was the daughter of the late Pearl and Dora Simmons. 

She retired from Kawneer in Harrisonburg, VA, after many years of employment.  

Her husband, John Herbert Hoover, preceded her in death. 

Survivors include three daughters, Bettie Pryor of Vienna, VA, Ann Lotts of Mantua, OH, and Sue Burow of Springfield, VA; a brother, Paul Simmons of Harrisonburg, VA; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.  

pastor Elmer Malcolm will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. today at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, where the family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m.  Burial will be private.

Jacob Condie Hedrick, 85

Jacob Condie Hedrick, 85, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Oct. 12, 2006, at Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community where he was a resident. .

Born July 5, 1921, in Brushy Run, he was the son of the late Jacob Alfred and Mary Rexrode Hedrick. 

He was a farmer and worked for Sellers Furniture before retiring in 1983.  He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the Battle of the Bulge and was in jured twice during the war.  He received the Oak Leaf Cluster and a Purple Heart.  He was a member of the American Legion.  He was a member of Peoples Baptist church.  

On Sept. 10, 1945, he married the former Evelyn V. Calhoun, who died on Feb. 22, 1993. 

Surviving are a daughter, Joan Heatwole of Keyser; four sisters, Elva Ratliff and Mary Alexander, both of Harrisonburg, VA, Juanita Miller of Luray, VA, and Martha Alt of Elkins; two brothers, Vernon Hedrick and Junior Hedrick, both of Harrisonburg, VA; and two grandchildren.

One sister, Hadie Hartman, and one brother Lemont "Pete" Hedrick, also preceded him in death. 

Dr. Lloyd Heatwole and Pastor Richard Forsythe conducted the funeral Oct. 14 at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg, VA.  Burial was in the East Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Nina Armstrong, 97

Nina Coral Armstrong, a true southern lady and the tenth child of John William and cora Anna Johnston Heltzel, was born on Sept. 3 1909, on the outskirts of the small, but booming town of Job and quietly passed away on Nov. 8, 2006, in the BeeHive homes of Salem, UT, after several weeks of loving care by their staff and A Plus Hospice, and in the presence of many members of her loving family.  

As a child, she lived on a farm and attended school in Job, now a ghost town, graduating from Green Bank High School in the neighboring county of Pocahontas.  She attended Shepherd College where she met the love of her life, Dice S. Armstrong, a fellow student from Moyers.  He had to leave school abruptly upon the death of his father so he persuaded his cousin, Mary Simmons, to bring Nina home with her over Easter vacation.  During this time they eloped to Riverton and were married on March 30, 1929.

At age 95, she (Mom) explained "you know Dad, eh could talk anybody into anything."  they were later sealed for time and all eternity on June 1, 1956, in the Salt Lake Temple.  After marriage, Mrs. Armstrong went back and finished school.  They both attended summer school at James Madison University and taught school for a couple of years.  Mr. Armstrong, being a real entrepreneur, was soon into farming, sawmilling and the livestock business.  Mrs. Armstrong, Forever after, became a devoted farmer's wife, raising their children, gardening, canning, washing, and cooking for hired hands.

She loved life.  She was an avid traveler, sports fan (especially the Utah Jazz and BYU Cougars), and loved hand quilting, painting  porcelain, crocheting doilies, and making baby blankets.  She was still doing word search and hidden vowel puzzles until shortly before her death.  

In 1953-1954 the whole family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of  Latter-Day Saints and with Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong eventually settling in Orem, UT, in June, 1965, where they lived for 30 years.  Then they settled in Mapleton, UT, next door to their daughter, Patty Lou Jensen, where they lived until their deaths.  They were very devoted to their new-found faith, and Mrs. Armstrong especially loved service in Relief Society and visiting teaching sisters in her ward. 

Her devoted husband of nearly 67 years, Dice Armstrong, died  in Mapleton, UT, on march 12, 1996.

She is survived by two sons and four daughters, James H. (Kay) Armstrong, Elk Ridge, UT, JoAnn A. (Wallace) Raynor, St. George, UT, patty A. (Rex) Jensen, Mapleton, UT, Sonja A. Cunningham, Orem, UT, Martha Lee A. (Dennis) Walker, La Belle, ID, and Gary E. (Lorraine) Armstrong,, Nampa, ID; 31 grandchildren; and 76 great-grandchildren.   

She also was preceded in death by 10 siblings; an infant son, John dice Armstrong, who died on Dec, 7, 1940; two grandsons, John Leland Armstrong, 22, who died Aug. 8, 1984, and Thales Armstrong Raynor, 39, who died on April 18, 1998. 

Funeral services were held Monday in the Mapleton Third Ward Chapel, Mapleton, UT.  Interment was in the Orem City Cemetery. 

Thelma Alt, 74

Thelma Cathelene Alt, 74, of Petersburg died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 25, 1932, in Pansy, she was the daughter of the late Enoch Alt and Sarah Ratcliff Alt.

She was employed at Windsor Knit Sewing Factory in Petersburg and retired from Wampler Foods in Moorefield.

 Survivors include two sons, Gary W. Pennington of Petersburg, and Donald D. Pennington of Upper Tract; two brothers, Roy Alt of Cabins and Vinton Alt, a resident of E.A. Hawse Nursing Home in Baker; three grandchildren, David Pennington and Kari Mullenax, both of Petersburg, and Brittany Pennington of Upper Tract; five great-grandchildren, Dakota Pennington, Kinsley Pennington, Pacee Pennington, Joselyn Raines and Jackson Berg.

She also was preceded in death by three sisters, Velma Stump, Mildred Rohrbaugh and infant Arvella Alt.

Pastor Peter Scott conducted Thursday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at Lahmansville Cemetery.
