Delmar Norman Lough

Delmar Norman Lough, 86, of Franklin died Nov. 4, 2008, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mr. Lough was born July 17, 1922, in Deer Run and was the son of the late Walter Lough and Bertha Ruddle Lough.

He retired in 1987 from the Sugar Grove Navy Base in Sugar Grove and was a farmer and construction worker.  He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church and attended Mount Zion School.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of DAV, American Legion, VFW and Military Order of Purple Heart.

His wife, Agnes Cunninghuam Lough, preceded him in death Nov. 7, 2006.

He is survived by a daughter, Lisa Lough Bowman and husband, Michael of Harrisonburg, Va; and a son, D. Schott Lough of Laurel, MD.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Marie Lough.

The Rev. Robert Anderson conducted the funeral at the Mount Zion United Methodist Church. Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin with military services conducted  by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Maryan Dahmer

Maryan D. Dahmer, 89 of Upper Tract died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at her home.

She was born Feb.1,1919 at Kline and was the daughter of the late Howard Dahmer and Eva Black Dahmer.

She received a masters degree from both West Virginia University and Vanderbilt Peabody College.  She was a teacher in the public schools of Pendleton County, Puerto Rico and Germany, and retired as a librarian from the Montgomery County, Maryland school system.  She was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist church.

Surviving are two sisters, Sueanna Czarnik of Springfield, VA, and Hannalyn Kiser of Camp Hill, PA; and a number of nieces andnephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Lowell Dahmer, half brothers and half sisters.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. SAturday at the chapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial will follow at the Cherry Hill Cemetery at Upper Tract.  A reception will follow be held at the Upper tract Fire House.

Carl Adam Yokum

Carl Adam Yokum, 92, of Seneca Rocks died Thursday, Nov. 6 2008, at his home. 

He was born Sep 10, 1916, at Seneca Rocks and was the son of the late Eston Yokum and Cynthia Elizabeth (Judy) Yokum.

Mr. Yokum was co-owner of Yokum's Vacationland, Seneca Rocks, for over 70 years.  He was a lifelong farmer and retired from Columbia Gas Company in Seneca Rocks.

He served on the Pendleton County Board of Education in the 1950s and also served as the fire warden in Pendleton County for 45 years.  He was previously co-owner of Elkins Stockyard in Elkins and was a member of the Seneca Rocks Presbyterian church.

His wife of 70 years, Shirley Bland Yokum survives. 

Also surviving are one son, Samuel D. Yokum of Seneca Rocks; two daughters, Patsy Ann White of Fairmont and Sharon Rose Maluo of Honolulu, HI; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one sister, Mabel Yokum, resident of the Grant county Nursing Home, Petersburg.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Charles Jackson Yokum.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev. Will Vaus officiating.  Interment was in North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.   

Memorials may be made to the Seneca Rocks Presbyterian Church, Seneca Rocks Volunteer Fire Department or North Fork Rescue Squad.

Michael Andrew Berg

Michael Andrew Berg, 39, of Petersburg died Nov, 5, 2008, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

Born Dec. 19, 1968, in Elpaso TX, he was a son of the late Dempsey D. and Linda Sue Karn Berg, Jr.

He attended school in Maysville and graduated from Petersburg High School.  He was a Baptist. 

He is survived by several loving family members, aunts, uncles and cousins, including his guardians, Paula, Margareth and David

He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Opal and Dempsey Berg, Sr., of Petersburg.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg, with the Revs. Calvin Redman and Charles "Dusty" Twigg officiating. 

Memorials may be made to the family in care of Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg.

Betty Simmons, 74

Betty H. Simmons, 74, of Rough Run died Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the unviersity of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. 

She was born on Sept. 26, 1934, in Moorefield and was the daughter of the late CLarence Hedrickand Ethel (Heavener) Hedrick.

Mrs. Simmons was a cook at the Dorcas Elementary School for 25 years.  she was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Petersburg.

Her husband of 54 years, H. Galen Simmons, survives.

Also surviving are one son, Michael Simmons and wife, Kimory of Rough Run; one daughter, Brenda Kimble and husband, Dan of Maysville; three grandchildren, Jeremy Simmonsand wife, Laura, Christina Kimble and Kylee Simmons, four great-grandchildren, Haley, Katrian, CHristian and Hunter; two sisters; Pauline See and Nina Wratchford, both of Moorefield; and one brother, George Hedrick of Moorefield. 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by three brothers, James Hedrick, Arthur Hedrick and Raymond Hedrick; three sisters, Marie Harter, Mable Wolfe and Nellie Spangler; and two half brother, Ted Hinkle and Arlin Hedrick.

Funeral services will be conducted today at 11 a.m. at the Schaeffer funeral Home with Pastor Larry M. Cantu officiating.  Burial will be in South Branch Valley Memorial Gardens, Petersburg.   

Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church. 

Norma M. Alexander

Norma M. Alexander, 73, of Piqua, OH, died at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Oct 28, 2008, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 7, 1935, in Minster, OH, to the late John and Mary (Dwenger) Sturwold.

Mrs. Alexander was a 1953 graduate of Fort Laramie High School and retired from Val Decker packing Company after 28 years of service She then worked for Elder-Beerman in Piqua, OH, for several years.  She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Piqua, OH.  She enjoyed camping, traveling and spending time at her winter home in Florida. 

Her husband, Warnie V. Alexander, whom she married July 10, 1985, in Piqua, OH, survives.

She is also survived by three step-daughters, Lynn (John) Prater of North Port, FL, Sharon (David) Curtis of Hartzell, AL, and Marcia (Keith) Kirk of North Port, FL; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; five brothers, Clarence Sturwold of Vandalia, OH, Ralph (Mary Ann) Sturwold of Fort Loramie, OH, Wilbur Sturwold of Russia, OH, Gilbert Ssturwold and John (Marlene) Sturwold, both of Minster, OH; a sister, Irma (Charles) Wendeln of Maria Stein, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Gaerke; and two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, Virgil Gaerke; and two sisters-in-law, Helen Sturwold and Mary Jane Sturwold.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Nov. 3 at St. Boniface Catholic church with Rev. Fr. Angelo C. Caserta celebrant.  Burial followed in Miami Memorial Park, Covington, OH.

Calvin Mongold, 93

Calvin Gainer Mongold, 93 a resident of Elkins departed this life early Thursday morning, November 6, 2008 at Valentine’s Personal Care Home at Elkins.

He was born Wednesday, September 22, 1915, at Ft. Seybert, a son of the late James Arley Mongold and Cora Alice Sites Mongold.

He attended the schools of Hardy County and was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Navy. During March of 1946, Mr. Mongold and three employees started the FRICK Circular Sawmill at Hinkle Mountain in Hardy County. In 1949, he purchased a larger Circular Sawmill requiring two more employees, which started at Harman, was then moved to Alpena and later moved to the Cheat River at Bowden. In 1961, an all electric band sawmill was purchased and erected at Poe Run near Elkins and in 1966 a dry kiln was installed. In 1986, Mongold Lumber Company purchased the former Dailey Lumber and Dimension Plant and in 1990 the company was sold at which time Mr. Mongold retired as President of the Company. He was a member of the Elkins Church of the Brethren.

During January of 1952, he was married to the former Jerelean P. (Vance) Thompson, who preceded him in death January 11, 2000.

Surviving are four daughters, Sarah Martin and husband, Joseph of Elkins; Phyllis Gurganus and husband, Cecil of Evansville, IN; Norma Shanklin and husband, Richard of Kirby, and Johnnie Sue Armentrout and husband, Max of Elkins; two sons, Herman Thompson and wife, Fay, and David Thompson and wife, Nancy, all of Elkins; two sisters, Goldie Frances Jackson, New Market, VA; Mary Pauline Nelson, Portland, MI; two brothers, David Ray Mongold, Petersburg; Cecil Dolan Mongold, Ft. Seybert; 18 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were one son, David E. Mongold on Sept. 29, 1993; and three brothers, Other William, Victor Arley and Elton Conway Mongold.

Final rites were conducted at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Saturday with the Reverend Dr. Ellis E. Conley officaiting.  Interment followed at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Elkins church of the Brethren "Love in Action Fund" in care of Betty Paugh, 100 Williams Avenue, Elkins, WV  26241.
