Jennifer Lee Johnson

Jennifer Lee Johnson, 27, of Parkton, MD, died suddenly on Oct. 29, 2008, after complication of a brain aneurysm at University of Maryland.

Ms. Johnson loved to help others.  she was shy, but her love for the theatre brought out her true personality.  she has been described as a caring sensitive person and was always there to help a friend in need.  She was always worried about her surroundings the environment and other world causes.  She attended and graduated from Hereford High in 1999, where she loved volleyball but, her true passion was theatre.  She continued her education at Frostburg State University, graduating in 2004 with a degree in theatre.  While at Frostburg, she went to Eugene O'Neil Theater Center for a semester.  With her love of the theatre, she loved acting in the Jewish Community Center, Owings Mill, Vagabond Baltimore, MD., and the Fells Point Community Theatre, Baltimore, MD.  

Ms. Johnson enjoyed working for Trader Joe's.  The store was an extension of her family.  The associates even came to see her while she was in the hospital.  She also liked cats, even to the point of rescuing them.

She was the loving daughter of John and Cindy Johnson, of Parkton, MD; beloved sister of Emily R. Johnson of Klamath, CA; cherished granddaughter of Virginia N. Judy of Upper Tract and the late Armand and Dede Shank and special friend of Pete Rattigan of Baltimore, MD.  Many caring aunts and uncle, cousins and friends survive.

A memorial service will be celebrated today at 2 p.m. at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., Timonium, MD.  Interment will be private.

Mary Cloda Mitchell Rice

Mary Cloda Mitchell Rice, 91, formerly of Clarksburg, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg.

She was born Oct. 19, 1917, in Pendleton County, the daughter of the late Oliver Bead Mitchell and Ida Mae Rexroad Mitchell.

Mrs. Rice was retired from the Harrison County Board of Education where she worked as an assistant cook.  She was a resident of Clarksburg for over 60 years. 

Mrs. Rice was a long-time member of Bible Baptist Temple in Stonewood.

Her husband, Alva C. Rice, preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Wanda Rice Watson, and husband Pual of Parkersburg; 12 grandchildren; timothy Rice of Fairmont, Steven Watson and wife, Dana of Townsend, DE, Matthew Watson of Clayton, DE, Joseph Watson and wife, Sandra of Alpharetta, GA, Robert Rice of Weirton, Philip Rice and wife, Danielle of Weirton, Mark Rice and wife, Jackie of Pittsburgh PA, Tina Stuart and husband, Robert of Fairmont, Tonya Cooke and husband, Timothy of Walkerton, NC, Mary Ruth Spencer and husband and husband, Scott of Elkton, MD, Rebecca lamp of Weirton and Flora Perrone and husband, Michael of Weirton; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Virginia Kisamore, and husband Jearl of Seneca Rocks; and several special nieces, nephews and friends. 

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Alva J. Rice and BernardL. Rice; four brothers, Roy Mitchell, Whitney Mitchell, Jesse Mitchell and Cecil Mitchell; and two sisters, Lena Mitchell and Myrtle Propst. 

Services were held Monday at bible Baptist Temple with Pastor Charles Madaus officiating.  Interment followed in the Floral Hill Memorial Gardens.

Clarence Wilfong, 89

Clarence Judy Wilfong, 89, of Roanoke, VA, formerly of Sugar Grove, died on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

He was best known to his friends as Judy or Jake Wilfong.

He was born Sept. 16, 1919, near Sugar Grove to Lester Wilfong, Sr., and Mary Wilfong, who both preceded him in death. 

Mr. Wilfong served in World War II in Europe in he Engineering Corp.  During the 1930s, he worked for the  CC Camps for three years.  later he worked for the Federal Bureau of Pulbic Roads (1955 to 1981).  He was an avid hunter from his childhood years and also an avid gardener, who always had vivid stories tot ell, regarding adventures while serving in World War II, his hunting experiences, work in logging camps, or whatever.  He also took up journaling, recording every minute of daily event for the last 30 year of life.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Roanoke , VA, for 47 years.

He married Mary H. Nelson of Circleville, who survives, on Feb. 8, 1946.  The fmaily moved to Roanoke, VA, in 1961. 

Surviving in addition to his wife, are children, John Wilfong and wife, wilma of Gastonia, NC, Norman Wilfong of Charlottesville, VA, and Jo An Balderston of Vinton, VA; grandchildren, James Bladerston of Taxton, VA, Dawn Fralin of Roanoke, VA, Jessica Minnix of Vinton, VA.  Joy Wilfong of Gastonia, NC, Joshua Wilfong of Dover, DE, and Benjamin Wilfong of San Francisco, CA; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Case, Jimmy Case, Jade Fralin, Carl Balderston, Ryan Balderston and Jake Balderston; one sister, Oneta Skinner of Triangle, VA, and a brother, bobby Wilfong of Mt. Jackson, VA.

He was also preceded in death by a grandosn, Bram Wilfong; a granddaughter, Ivy Raintree; and a brother, Lester wilfong, Jr.

A graveside service was held in St. Michael's Lutheran Church Cemetery, south of Sugar Grove.

Ora Mae Herath, 91

Ora Mae Krause Herath, 91, of Silver Spring, MD, and Charlottesviille, VA, went to be with her lord on Oct. 30, 2008, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease.  She had lived in Columbus, OH, for the past 15 months. 

Born in Moyers in 1917, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Arthur E. Krause and Wilhelmina Larenz Krause.

Her husband, Henry G. Herath, preceded her in death.

Her father served mountain parishes in Virginia and West Virginia.  He is remembered for his ministry, which included serving churches of the Thorn Creek Lutheran Parish and starting St. John's Academy and Junior College, which she attended.  She remained a devoted member of the Lutheran Church.  She worked as an office manager for the Montgomery County MD Board of Realtors, and then as a medical transcriber at the NIH.  She will be remembered for her generosity and her amazing culinary skills and will be deeply missed by her family, her legacy.

Surviving are her children, Carolyn (Donald) Wachtman, Richard (Barbara) Herath and Katherine (Thomas) Reinke; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. 

Interment was at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland, MD.

Dee Franklin Hottinger

Dee Franklin Hottinger, 64, of Ft. Seybert died Oct. 7, 2008, at his residence.

Born March 5, 1944, in Ft. Seybert, he was a son of the late Isaac William Hottinger and Lena U. Dove Hottinger.

He attended Pendleton County Schools and was an Army veteran, serving in Vietnam.  He retired as an automotive mechanic fromLou Zigler Ford in Harrisonburg, VA.  He was a member of the Bethlehem Church of the Brethren.

He was married to Catherine Martin Hottinger of Petersburg, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Mark Owen Hottinger and wife, Cindy of Corona, CA, and Patrick Dewire Hottinger and wife, Maria of Franklin; four sisters, Mary Dasher of Ft. Seybert, Kay Hamman of Stephens City, VA, Gay Marvin of Buena Vista, VA, and May Harold of Harrisonburg, VA; one brother, Fred Hottinger of Ft. Seybert; and one granddaughter, Colleen Hottinger.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Hottinger and William Hottinger; and two sisters, Velma Harold and Faye Propst.

Funeral services were held Oct. 11 at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Richard Lintz officiating.  Burial was in Ruddle Family Cemetery, Franklin, with military graveside services by Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Maxwell Bennett, 86

Maxwell Harding Bennett, 86, of Daileydeparted this life Saturday afternoon, Nov 1, 2008, at the DAvis Memorial Hospital.  He had been in declining health since August.

He was born Wednesday, March 15, 1922, at Whitmer, a son of the late Clinton Bennett and Peachie Nelson Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was a 1941 graduate of Circleville High School, where he played basketball and baseball, and was a veteran of world War II, serving with the United States Army from Dec. 23, 1942, to Dec. 23, 1945, in the Pacific Theatre.  He had worked in the Ship Yards at Newport News, VA, Coastal Lumber Company and Bauer Lumber company, retiring in 1986.  he was also a farmer and mechanic and a Methodist by faith. 

On Jan. 26, 1946, he was married to the former Opal Vesta Warner, who survives in Dailey.      

Also surviving are three sons, Maxwell Harding  Bennett, Jr., Michael Lynn Bennett and wife, Maggie, and Jeffrey Alta Bennett and wife, Pat, all of Dailey; five brothers, Milford Bennett and wife, Doris of Franklin; Harold Bennett and wife, Marva of Indiana, Wayne Bennett of Florida, Roy Bennett and wife, Betty of Cherry Grove, and Glen Bennett and wife, Sarah of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; two sisters, Jane Hoover and husband, Jim of Franklin, and Jackie Burkey and husband, Roy of Tuscon, AZ; five grandcildren, Clinton Bennett and finace, Sarah Lehman, Mikie Bennett, Justin Bennett, Julie Supak and husband, Aric and Jeffrey Bennett and wife, Danielle; three step-grandchildren, Anthony and William Chandler and Stephanie Miller; four great-grandchildren, Myla Bennett, Hailey Supak, Corinne Bennett and Adryana Young. 

He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Lois Lee Bennett, and one brother, Jimmy Bennett. 

Final rites were conducted Wednesday at the Lohr and Barb funeral Home of Elkins with the REverend Eli D. Hostetler officaiting.  Interment followed at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at gilman, where the H.W. Daniel's Post #29, American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post #3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars conducted full military honors.

Sally E. Wright, 74

Mrs. Sally Ethel Wright, 74, of Mount Crawford, VA, passed away Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at her home.

Sally was born in Franklin on Aug. 28, 1934, and was a daughter of the late Arthur j. and Ida Mae (Propst) Lambert.

She worked at Ethan Allen for 15 years and Metro Pants for 10 years.

She was united in marriage on Oct. 30, 1955, to David Emmanuel Wright, who preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2001.

She is survived by four sons, Johnny N. Wright of Franklin, Douglas E. Wright of Bridgewater, VA, Samuel M. Wright of Mount Crawford, VA, and Thomas A. Wright of Sangerville, VA; three sisters, Arbella Pitsenbarger and Phyllis A. Lambert, both of Franklin, and Lola Catherine Nelson of Indiana; two brothers, billy D. Lambert  of Verona, VA, and William Lambert of Franklin; eight grandchildren ; and six great-grandchildren. 

The Rev. Lloyd Sprinkle conducted a private family burial at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum in Harrisonburg, VA.

Florence Simmons, 86

Florence Agnes Simmons, 86, of Elkridge, MD, died Oct. 27, 2008.

She was born Nov. 22, 1921, in Pennsylvania.

Her husband, CArl Mason Simmons, who was born and raised in Pendleton County, preceded her in death.

she and her husband lived in Pendleton County from 1982 to 1994.

Surviving are two sons, Robert M. Simmons and wife, Judith L., and Lawrence F. Simmons and wife, Tina M.; one daughter, Dorothy I. Tingen and husband, Billy; eight grandchildren, Robert M. Simmons, Jennifer L. Simmons, Laura J. Holman, Ashley B. Sevire, Bryan F Simmons, Carlie M. Simmons, Candance N. Tingen and Benjamin S. Tingen; and five great-grandchildren, Brittany L. Towel, Cody M. Simmons, Nicholas J. Schacht, Mason F. Simmons and Aidan D. Simmons. 

Funeral services were held on Saturday at Bethel Assembly of God, Jessup, MD.  Interment followed in Fort Lincoln Cemetery.

Clara F. Kline, 74

Clara Fleming Kline, 74, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Oct. 28, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Kline was born May 8, 1934, in Pendleton county and was the daughter of the late Marvin A. and Willia Gladys Rexrode Fleming.

She was a school teacher, having taught in Pendleton County and Rockingham County, VA, Public Schools and retired in 1991 as director of staff development.

She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Waldo Eugene Kline.

Surviving are a brother, Paul Fleming of Hampton, VA; a nephew, William A. Fleming, a niece, Cynthia Ann Fleming; and two grand-nephews, Bryan Fleming and Daniel Fleming. 

A graveside service was held at Mount Horeb Cemetery in Hinton, VA, with Pastor Sonny Henkel officiating.

Services were entrusted to Kyger Funeral Home in Harrsonburg, VA.
