Eunice E. Hartzler, 90

Eunice Evangeline Hartzler, 90, a resident of Dayton, VA, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at her home. 

Mrs. Hartzler was born on February 4, 1913, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was the duaghter of the late Henry B. and Betty Brunk Keener.  She was a member of the Pike Mountain Church and was a homemaker. 

On November 28, 1935, she married Earl J. Hartzler, who preceded her in death on July 8, 1998.  Her husband served the Brushy Run Mennonite Church at Roaring Creek from 1941-1964. 

Surviving are three daughter, Lois Jane Risser of Dayton, VA, Eva Marie Eberly of Bari, Italy, and Ruth Ann Sommers of Hartville, OH; one son, Leroy Edward Hartzler of Dublin, GA; one brother, Oliver Keener of Danville, PA; 19 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Pike Mennonite Church with  Austin Hege, Ellis Beery and Nelson Showalter officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.

Martha Alice Hartman

Martha Alice Hartman, Martinsburg, passed away on October 21, 2003, at the home of her daughter with whom she resided. 

Born January 14, 1906, in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Mary Louise (Propst) Simmons. 

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Roberts and Marianna Smith, both of Martinsburg; one son, Berlie Hartman; seven grandchildren, Donna Sprinkle, Sandra Underwood, Sharon Morgan, and Karen Shank, all of Martinsburg, and Diana Coleman, Fayetteville, Charles K. Hartman, Franklin and Angela Rexrode, Fort Seybert. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Cletus Hartman in 1987; also five brothers, Minor, Henry, Floyd, Joseph and Okey Simmons; and two sisters, Viola Vandevander and Effie Cook. 

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

She was a lifelong member of the Brethren Church. 

Services were held Friday, Oct. 24, at Rosedale Funeral Chapel with Pastor Eddie EDmonds offciating.  Burial was in the Rosedale Cemetery.

Earlie Albert Huffman

Earlie Albert Huffman, 88, of Franklin, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Huffman was born Feb. 13, 1915, in Riverton and was the son of the late Ora Huffman and Rettie Bland Huffman.

He was employed at John Manville Insulation Company in Washington, DC, and was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church. 

His wife, Sylvia Mae Lambert Huffman, preceded him in death Feb. 16, 2002.   

 He is survived by four daughters, Rettie Mae Waggy of Franklin, Sarah Fay Harper of Bridgewater, VA, Mildred Florence Jennings of Peterstown, and Rose Elva Adams of Wellsburg; two sons, Albert Wayne Huffman and Ralph Ora Huffman, both of Franklin; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was also precede din death by one son, Earl Lafayette, March 3, 1979; one grandson, Roy Lee Huffman March 3, 1979; one brother, Hansel Huffman; and three sisters, Eva Brannan, Nellie Cobb and Gladys Hedrick. 

Mr. Huffman was the last surviving member of his immediate family. 

Pastor James Phares, the Rev. Jonathon Jennings and Elder Willard Huffman conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.  

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton Nursing Home, Franklin.  

Fred Bennett, 87

Fred Bennett, 87, of Onego, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg. 

Mr. Bennett was born June 5, 1916, in Onego and was the son of the late John w. Bennett and Effie Alice (Davis) Bennett.  

He was a farmer and a custodian for McCall's Printing Company in Bowie, MD.  He was a lifelong member of the Seneca United Methodist Church. 

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Mildred (Bennett) Bennett; three sons, John H. Bennett of White Marsh, MD, Larry R. "Rick" Bennett of Bear, DE, and George Wayne Bennett of Seneca Rocks; a daughter, Loretha K. Humphrey of Daytona Beach, FL; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.   

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Burrel Bennett, Harley Bennett and Estel Bennett; six sisters, Lena Mallow, Alta Harper, Flossie Raines, Lona White, Nida Ketterman and Kate Davis.  

Mr. Bennett was the last surviving member of his immediate family.  

Pastors Barbara Rexroad and Rebecca Bennett conducted the funeral 1 p.m. Wednesday at Seneca United Methodist Church.  Burial was at the Bennett Family Cemetery in Onego. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Seneca United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association. 

John Vance

John Vance, 62, of Baltimore, MD, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 20003, at Joseph Ritchey Hospice Center in Baltimore, MD. 

Mr. Vance was born July 11, 1941, in Riverton and was a son of the late Fred Vance and Ruby Marie Harper Vance.  

He was a heavy equipment operator for J&L Vance in Baltimore, MD.  

He is survived by a daughter, Laura Vance of Baltimore, MD; a longtime companion, Naomi Williams of Buena Vista, VA; eight sisters, Elaine Swick of Pasadena, MD, Margaret Ferris, Maxine Morris and Sue Ramsey, all of Glen Burnie, MD, Edith Good, Irene Stump and Donna Herb, all of Upper Tract, and JoAnn Plaugher of Franklin; seven brothers, Jack Vance and Frederick "Mancie" Vance, both of Glen Burnie, MD, Richard Vance and Randy Vance, both of Eastern Shore, MD, Tom Vance of Upper Tract, Bob Vance, Fort Seybert, and Jerry Vance of Baltimore, MD: and one grandson Rashaun Vance of Baltimore, MD.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Dale "Rob" Vance ('94) and Gary VAnce ('81); and one sister, Billie Jo Stull (2002).  

The Rev. Stanley Kile conducted the funeral Sunday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at the Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.

Ruth Kimble Wilfong, 70

Ruth C. Kimble Wilfong, 70, of Canton, OH, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at her home. 

Mrs. Wilfong was born Feb. 12, 1933, in Riverton, and was the daughter of the late Curtis Kimble and Tena White. 

She retired from Frito Lay and was a dedicated member of Trinity United Church in Canton, OH.  

She is survived by her former husband, Charles Wilfong, of Canton, OH; three daughters and sons-in-law, Coleen and Joseph Abell of Lexington, KY, Christena and Robert Zander of Canton, OH, and Brenda and John Jasionowski of Georgia; six sisters, Gay Johnson of Winslow, IL, Genevive Schwuab of Lake Havasue City, AZ, Macie Simmons of Bridgeport, Kathleen Vandevander of Bartow, Betty Thompson of MArtinsburg, and Violet Borman of Waynesboro, VA; three brothers, Ronald Nelson of Malvern, OH, Gale Nelson of Abingdon, MD, and Duane Kimble of Riverton; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin.  Burial will be at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton. 

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. 

Boyd W. Siple, 88

Boyd W. Siple, 88, of Brandywine, died Monday, Nov 3, 2003, at Nella's Nursing Home at Crystal Springs. 

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.
