Bonnie Virginia Glover, 79, of Beckley died Oct. 24, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

She was born July 12, 1927, at Brandywine, a daughter of the late Vertie Warren Waggy and Helen Blanche Mitchell Waggy. 

She was a resident of Franklin, WV for 74 years and moved to Beckley in March 2001. During her time in Franklin, she was very active in her church and community, where she loved to sing, cook for social gatherings and participate in church activities. She was a member of the Franklin Main Street United Methodist Church and an auxiliary member of Gideon’s International. She attended Faith Baptist Church in Beckley.

On Nov. 1, 1946, she married her husband, Homer Glover Jr., who survives.

She is survived by six children and their spouses, Patricia McClung and husband, James McClung, Barry Glover and wife, Deborah Glover, Benjamin Glover and wife, Debra Glover, all of Franklin, Amy Lovegrove and husband, Dr. George Lovegrove of Beckley, Mark Glover and wife, Bobbie Glover of Diana, Texas, and Beth Graver and husband, Thomas Graver of Bluefield; 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, one brother, Warren R. Waggy and wife, Constance of Franklin and one sister, Dolly Sponaugle and husband, Berlie of Franklin.

Funeral services were conducted at the Franklin Main Street Methodist Church on Saturday by the Reverends Carl Tribett and Larry Halsey, D.Min.  Burial services followed at the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.

Delmas Leroy Eckard, 53, of Elkton, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, at Page Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Eckard was born March 25, 1953, in Sugar Grove and was a son of the late Alfred Eckard and Anna Mae King Eckard.

He was a mechanic at Steven Toyota in Harrisonburg.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Bonnie Lue Meadows Eckard; two sons, Shannon Eckard and Kelven Wayne Meadows of McGaheysville, VA; two brothers; four sisters and two grandchildren.

The funeral was held Tuesday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, VA. Burial followed at Jollett Cemetery in Page County.

Stanley Edward "Buddy" Raines, 68, of Grottoes, VA, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at the home of his mother-in-law, Hattie Huffman, in Riverton, of an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Raines was born May 9, 1938, in Franklin and was a son of the late Harley Raines and Retha Bowers Raines.

He graduated from Franklin High School in 1956 and attended Solomon Chapel Church. He retired as an electrician from Dupont Corp. in Waynesboro, VA, in 1991. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

On June 4, 1960, he married Helen Judy Huffman, who survives. 

Also surviving are two sons, Johnny Mark Raines of Timberville, VA, and Ricky Ray Raines of Grottoes, VA; and a sister, Helen Heavner of Upper Tract.

The Rev. Stanley Kile conducted the funeral Tuesday at Solomon Chapel Church. Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton by Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin. .

Marsha Carolyn Simmons, 51, of Elkins, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006, in Beverly, as the result of an automobile accident.

Mrs. Simmons was born July 31, 1955, in Gloucester, Mass., and was a daughter of Sandra Goslin Gaston of Lost Creek.

She graduated from South Harrison High School and was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Clarksburg and the Franklin Lions Club. She was an electric operations manager at Allegheny Power Company, where she was employed for 30 years.

On May 22, 1992, she married Bradley Edward Simmons, who survives.

In addition to her mother and husband, she is also survived by a daughter, Jennifer Friend of Wintersville, OH; two sisters, Sue Surock of Clarksburg and Barbara Gaston of Mount Clare; and four brothers, David Gaston and Tim Gaston, both of Columbus, OH, Michael Gaston of Lost Creek and Bobby Gaston of Mount Clare.

Pastor Craig Richter conducted the funeral Sunday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Judes Children’s Hospital.

A memorial service for Norma Eileen Nelson, 79, of Franklin, will be held Saturday at the chapel of the Kimble Funeral HOme, Franklin.  

Mrs. Nelson died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Nelson was born May 2, 1927, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was a daughter of the late Frank Simmons and Verde Wenger Simmons.

She and her husband operated Warner’s Theatre and Warner’s Drive-in for 10 years. She was Methodist by faith.

On April 7, 1947, she married Granville Nelson, who survives.

She is also survived by a daughter, Judy Gordon of Cherry Grove; a son, Eric Nelson of Galiano Island, B.C., Canada; two sisters, Blanche Dean of Bridgewater, VA, and Beulah Payne of Harrisonburg, VA; a brother, Carl Simmons of Phoenix, AZ, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Parker W. Cooper

Parker William Cooper, 85, of Elkins made his journey home to receive his many heavenly rewards and dance around the throne rejoicing with his brothers and sisters in Christ late Tuesday evening, Oct. 24, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital, Elkins. We will rest beneath the wings of his vibrant smile and the intense strength he imparted to us.

He was born July 24, 1921, at Harman, a son of the late Rollin Snyder Cooper and Verdie Hedrick Cooper.

He attended the schools of Harman and Michigan and had served with the U.S. Army during World War II where he fought during the Normandy Conflict and was assigned to Company F, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Division. Other areas of service included Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, where he earned the following: the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, AM, Theater Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon.  He was a well-known farmer in the Whitmer area until 1969 when he moved to Elkins. He was a former employee of the Huttonsville Correctional Center and Allegheny Lumber Company and was a member of the Church of God at Whitmer and Elkin, a member of Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter #1, where he served as chaplain. He was a prayer warrior who’s passion was guiding others to the Lord and ministering to hospital and nursing home patients, never missing a week. He never encountered a stranger and was an inspiration to people from every imaginable walk of life. He spent the last few years of his retirement gardening and preaching the gospel.

On Feb. 2, 1947, at Davis, he was married to the former A. Cathern Rexrode, who preceded him in death April 10, 1996.

Also surviving are two sons, William Rollin Cooper and wife, Diana of Elkins and Richard Jones and wife, Frances of Quinwood; one special son, Darryl Talkington and wife, Sabrina of Elkins; two daughters, Brenda Cooper Mullenex and husband Greg, of Elkins and Kathryn Luann “Bugsy” Tipton and husband, John of Norfolk; one special daughter, Marie Hinkle of Elkins; one sister, Joyce Sanders of Akron, OH; one foster sister, Stella Mullennex and husband, Ed of Job; five grandchildren, Shelly Beaver and husband, Mark, Christina Gainer, Katina Ritchie and husband, Jimmy, William Rollin Cooper II and James Jones and wife, Kim; and two great-grandchildren, D.J. Gainer and Crystal Jones.

Also preceding him in death were one brother, David H. Cooper; and two sisters, Annabelle Nelson and Eleanor Nelson.

 Final rites were conducted at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Saturday with the Reverend Doctor Phillip Richards and the Reverend Randall Richards officiating.  Interment followed at Laurel Hill Cemetery at Whitmer where members of the West Virginia honor guard and H.W. Daniels Post #29, American Legion conducted military honors.

Wilda Ellen Blizzard McLaughlin Stargell, 89, of Charlottesville, VA, passed away on Friday Oct. 27 2006, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Born on March 4, 1917, in Brandywine, she was the daughter of the late Felix Lee and Carrie Propst Blizzard. 

Mrs. Stargell was a member of Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church and had retired from the University of Virginia Hospital Emergency Room Department after 32 years of service.  She had a special love for growing flowers especially roses.  

Her husbands, Ward McLaughlin and John Stargell, preceded her in death.  

She is survived by her daughter, Ellen Mitchell and husband, Harold of Sugar Grove; her son, Neil McLaughlin and wife, Darlene, of Charlottesville, VA; four grandchildren, Hugh Mitchell and wife, Pat of Charlottesville, VA, Cary Hevener and husband, George of Brandywine, Gail Megahan and husband, Renny, of Charlottesville, VA and Sandra McLaughlin and fiancé, Myron Ripley, of Charlottesville, VA; her great-grandchildren, Whit Mitchell, Tyler Mitchell, Carter Megahan, all of Charlottesville, VA, and Jordan Hevener of Brandywine; and dear friends, Goldie Stargell, Muriel Edmonds, Virginia Mabry and Gladys Harris.

She was also preceded in death by  two sisters and two brothers and a dear friend, Helen Berkeley. 

A funeral service was conducted Monday in the Chapel of the Hill and Wood Funeral Home, Charlottesville, VA, with the Rev. Edward Hopkins officiating. Burial followed in Monticello Memory Gardens.
