Betty W. Hammer

Betty W. Hammer, 76, of Monterey, VA, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at her home. 

Mrs. Hammer was born Jan. 25, 1927, in Pendleton County and was a daughter of the late Sewell Jackson, Sr., and Ruth Gutshall Warner. 

She was a homemaker and a member of the Monterey United Methodist Church.  She was a charter member of the Highland county Rescue Squad, a member of the Highland County Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary and Monterey Home Demonstration Club. 

On Aug. 14, 1946, she married Carl Eugene Hammer, who preceded her in death May 14, 2001. 

She is survived by a daughter, Olivia Lee Hammer of Monterey, VA; three sons, C.W. Hammer and Dale Hammer, both of Monterey, VA; three sons, C.W. Hammer and Dale Hammer, both of Monterey, VA, and Mike Hammer of Blue Grass, VA; a sister, Rosa Lou Hawn of Kingsport, TN; a brother, S. Jack Warner, Jr., of Mustoe, VA; seven granddaughter, Gail Arnott of Monterey, VA, Casey and Candace Hammer of Burnsville, VA, Melinda Hammer of Blue Grass, VA, Amy Jo and Alisha Hammer of Staunton, VA, and Vickie Gragg of Harrisonburg, VA; five great-grandchildren, Dustin Layton, Savannah and Noah Arnott, Ashley Gragg and Tyler Cupp; a number of nieces and nephews and two special caregivers, Sherry Ann Lowry and Bernice Smith.  

The Revs. Michael Sullivan and Donald Rose, Darren Massey and Chip Hill conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Friday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA.  Burial was in the Monterey Cemetery.
