Peachie Edith Thompson

 Peachie Edith Thompson, 75, of Circleville passed away on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at the Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.

 She was born on Aug. 4, 1934, in Brushy Run, the daughter of the late Amby and Delphia Payne Thompson.

 She was a homemaker.

 Her husband, Theodore Sponaugle, preceded her in death on July 12, 1990.

 Surviving are five daughters, Betty Lee Mallow and husband, Charles of Arbovale, Gladys Mary Thompson of Circleville, Eva Mae Thompson and husband, David of Bridgewater, VA, Juanita Rae Phares and husband, Paul of Riverton, and Janet Lynn Hiner and husband GW of Circleville; two sons, Theodore Sponaugle, Jr., and Ricky Lee Sponaugle and wife, Jennifer, all of Circleville; two brothers, Jerlo Thompson and wife, Helen of Seneca Rocks, and Achie Thompson and wife, Gladys of Alpena; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

 She was also preceded in death by a son, John Gale; three brothers, Hughie, Dewey, Trumie; and three sisters, Ressie Biller, Lillie Elza and Mary Catherine Thompson.

 Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Brother David Miller officiating.  Interment was in the North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.

Fred Dice Bennett, Sr.

Fred Dice Bennett, Sr., 78, of Rocky Mount, VA, died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009.

He was born April 27, 1931, and was the son of the late Jesse H. and Tena Sponaugle Bennett of Circleville.

He was a 1950 graduate of Circleville High School.

Bennett was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Mounts Bennett.

He is survived by one son, David W. Bennett and wife, Deana of Farmville, VA; one granddaughter, Traci B. Oakes and husband, Cale of Rocky Mount, VA; one grandson, Terry L. Mitchell (Tressi Young) of Rocky Mount, VA; two step-grandsons, Jamie and Justin Womack of Farmville, VA; two great-grandsons, Caleb and Tanner Oakes of Rocky Mount, VA; one brother, Fay H. Bennett and wife, Dorothy of Circleville; one sister, Hazel B. Simmons of Cherry Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by one son, Fred D. Bennett, Jr.; and one daughter, Julie Bennett Mitchell.

Funeral services were conducted Oct. 19 at Flora Funeral Chapel, Rocky Mount, VA, with Rev. Mike Lawhorn officiating.  Interment followed in the Furnace Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Harper Lambert Judy

Mary Harper Lambert Judy, 90, of Franklin died Monday afternoon, Oct. 19, 2009, at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond, VA.

She was born Oct. 31, 1918, at Circleville and was the daughter of the late Leonard Boyd Harper and Leoda Kate Weiford Harper.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church.

On Oct. 7, 1937, she married Erman Lambert, who preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1967.  On Feb. 4, 2001, she was also preceded in death by her second husband, Paul Hammer Judy, whom she had married Dec. 18, 1968.

Surviving are three daughters, Wanda Walton and husband, Vernon,  Lois August and husband, Albert, III, all of Richmond, VA, and Doreen Judy of Franklin; three step-sons, Steve Wood of Atlanta, GA, Kenneth Judy and wife, Kathy of Toano, VA, and James Judy  and wife, Tinka of Winchester, VA; one sister, Alice Will of Blue Grass, VA; one brother, Paul Harper of Franklin; four grandchildren, J.D. Judy, Edward Judy, Molly Huffman and Tappan August; and one great-grandson, John Benjamin Judy.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Lynn Paul Lambert, on Aug. 19, 1962; and by five brothers.

Funeral services were held at Friday at Franklin United Methodist Church, Franklin, with Pastor Sam Harper and Rev. Robert Anderson officiating.  Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery at Franklin.

 Samuel Puffenbarger, 68

Samuel Archie Puffenbarger, 68, of Mount Solon, VA, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009.

He was born in Sugar Grove on Dec. 2, 1940, the son of the late John Harrison and Maudy Jane (Ellinger Hoover) Puffenbarger.

He retired from Wampler Hatchery and was a member of Community Christian Fellowship Church at Spring Creek, VA, where he served as a director and Sunday school teacher.  Unless he was really sick, he without fail would attend church every Sunday morning and Wednesday night.  He was also a man who loved bear hunting and would never leave his dogs behind in the woods.  He was a very kind man who would take his shirt off his back to help someone.

He was united in marriage to Tacey Cordiliousa (Huffman) Puffenbarger on Oct. 11, 1998, in Spring Creek, VA.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four daughters, Mary A. Ledoux and husband, William A. of Waynesboro, VA, Wanda J. Thompson and husband, David of Churchville, VA, Ruth L. Thompson and husband, Ricky D. of Mount Solon, VA, and Tacey D. Sutton of Staunton, VA; a son, James E. Mitchell of Richmond, VA; two sisters, Leafy Simmons of Sugar Grove and Bertha Shank of Mount Solon, VA; two brothers, George Puffenbarger of Spring Creek, VA, and Johnny Puffenbarger of Verona, VA; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted at the Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, VA, on Friday with Mae Reader officiating.  Burial followed at Oaklawn Mausoleum & Memory Gardens in Staunton, VA.

Frances Crigler Glover

Frances Crigler Glover, 88, of Franklin went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

She was born in Franklin on Feb. 10, 1921, the fourth daughter of the late A. Boyd and Eva Kathryn Crigler.

Mrs. Glover was a beautician, first with her elder sister, Irene Stickley, and later she and her husband, John, formed the Fran-Jon Beauty Shop.  She continued in the shop until failing health forced her to retire.

She was a devoted daughter and sister.

All of her family were members of the Franklin Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Circle.

Her husband of 68 years, John S. Glover, survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Kitty G. Suter, and husband, Gary of Harrisonburg, VA; a son, John S. Glover, Jr., and wife, Rebecca of Fairfax Station, VA; two granddaughters, Bree G. Lawrence, and husband, Beau of Sneeds Ferry, NC; and Krista L. Suter of Harrisonburg, VA; two step-granddaughters, Jeanne Chase and Amy Enlow; one great-grandson, Gabriel Lawrence; three step-great-granddaughters, Taylor and Fiona Chase and Sofia Enlow; a brother, Alfred B. Crigler of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Thelma C. Ruddle, Alma C. Hinkle, Irene C. Stickley and Hilda C. Leichsenring.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Chapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. Kevin Hand officiating.  Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Dallas Jane Hundley

Dallas Jane Warner Raines Hundley, 76, of Greenville, SC, and formerly of Riverton, died at the home of her daughter on Oct. 17, 2009.

She was the daughter of Ona Bland Warner of Pendleton Manor, Franklin, and the late Burke Warner.

Surviving are two sons; two daughters; three sisters, Doris Warner of Franklin, Naomi Wheeler of Lacey Springs, VA, and Lorene Warner of Riverton; one brother, Guy Warner of Elkton, VA.

She was cremated, and a memorial service will be held at a later date at the Burke Warner homeplace, Bland Hills, Riverton.

Maxel Dow Alt

Maxel Dow Alt, 76, of Petersburg went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at the Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

His kind heart and caring manner will be remembered by all.

Born July 5, 1933, in Brushy Run, he was the son of Kate E. Calhoun Alt of Petersburg and the late Okey Taft Alt.

Mr. Alt graduated from Franklin High School in 1950 and Potomac State College in 1952 and from West Virginia University in Morgantown in 1958 with a master's degree in agriculture.  He served in the U.S. Army and had received the Korean War Conflict Medal and was a member of the Petersburg VFW Post 6454.

He was employed by Fisher Body Shop in Baltimore, MD.  He was a county extension agent for the State of Maryland and had worked with Farmers and Youth in FFA and 4-H in locations of Princess Ann, MD, Westminster, MD, and Oakland, MD.  He was employed as assistant manager with Southern States in Weston and was manager of Southern States in Morgantown.  In 1971, he moved to Petersburg where he began farming and worked with Southern States in Petersburg until 1976.  He became manager of Grant County Farm Service in Petersburg.  In 1989, he became owner of Alt's Farm Service in Petersburg.

He was a former member of Landes Ruritan Club and was a member of Bethel Church of the Brethren.  He served as treasurer for Pansy Landes TV Corporation for 28 years.  He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and football.

His wife of 53 years, Lovetta Delphia Judy Alt, whom he married on July 6, 1956, survives.

Surviving, in addition to his mother and wife, are two daughters, Rhonda K. Rohrbaugh and husband, Larry of Petersburg, and Sharon S. Squires and husband, Steve of Winchester, VA; three sons, Wendell D. Alt and wife, Linda of Maysville, Douglas W. Alt and wife, Christine, and Brian K. Alt, all of Petersburg; one sister, Rosalie Heavener of Petersburg; one brother, Vivan C. Alt of Petersburg; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Annadale Alt.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev. Greg Rotruck officiating.  Burial was in the Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville, with military honors by the VFW Post 6454 and WV Army National Guard Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Church of the Brethren or American Heart Association.
