Althea C. Robinson

Althea Celeste Robinson, 65, of The Colony, TX, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, at her home.

Mrs. Robinson was born June 4, 1942, in Moyers and was a daughter of the late Collie Roosevelt Moats and Margaret Josephine Scott Moats.

She was a retired travel counselor for American Express in New York City and was a member of Moats Chapel AME Church. She graduated from Franklin High School.

Her husband of 40 years, Curtis Eugene Robinson, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Darien Robinson of The Colony, Texas, and Terrence Robinson of Washington, DC; and six sisters, Anna Bell Middleton Moats and Mamie Redman, both of Staunton, VA, Iva Melzenia Shupe of Lexington, MD, Wilma Halsey of Tampa, FL, Pamela Redman of Franklin and Alberta Alt of Upper Tract.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack Harrison Moats, David Terry Moats and Thomas Andrew Moats. 

The Rev. Eldon Moats conducted the funeral Saturday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at the Moats family cemetery in Moyers.

Billy B. Baisden

Billy B. Baisden, 83, of Franklin died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at the Franklin Group Home, where he had lived since 1991.

Mr. Baisden was born Aug. 2, 1924, in Mabscott, Raleigh County, and was the son of the late George B. Baisden and Minnie Keene Baisden.

He enjoyed fishing, swimming, going to the Senior Center and traveling.

He is survived by a cousin in Cleveland, OH.

Pastor Calvin Bailey conducted a memorial service Sunday at the Franklin Assembly of God Church.  Burial was at Calfee Cemetery, Mt. Tabor, on Monday. 

Arrangements were by Kimble Funeral Home, Franklin.

Vernon M. Whetzel, 84

Vernon Melton Whetzel, 84, of Petersburg died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg.

Mr. Whetzel was born June 16, 1923, in Pendleton County and was a son of the late Albert Melton Whetzel and Martha Jane Alt Whetzel.

He was a truck driver for Burlee Moving and Storage in Columbus, OH, and served in the Navy during World War II.

His second wife, Carol Curtis Whetzel, survives.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lula (Cobb) Whetzel.

Also surviving are two sons, Larry Melton Whetzel of Manassas, VA, and James Michael Whetzel of Marysville, OH; a daughter, Charlotte Ann Watson of Baltimore, MD; four sisters, Ruth A. Engle of Purgitsville, Anna M. Bennett of Moorefield, Clara Nell Ours of Cabins and Cloda Bell Kisamore of Arthur; a brother, Albert Junior Whetzel of Arthur; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren;

He also was preceded in death by four brothers, Ora C. Whetzel, Charles R. Whetzel, Curtis A. Whetzel and Arvil W. "John" Whetzel; and three sisters, infant Geneva Virginia Whetzel, Rhoda Ellen Berg and Goldie Arbutus Kesner.  

The Rev. Joseph Eversole conducted the funeral Friday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract with military honors by the Petersburg VFW Post 6454 and the JROTC.

Ruby K. Warner

Ruby Katherine Warner, 79, of Riverton died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

Born Dec. 25, 1927, in Riverton, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur “Bill” Phares and Millie Margaret Propst Phares.

She retired as a supervisor and manager at Franklin Garment Company and was a member of Riverton United Methodist Church. She graduated from Circleville High School in 1946.

Her husband, Golden Edward “Pete” Warner, preceded her in death Dec. 12, 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Dora Jean Harper and husband, Elwood of Riverton; one brother, Grover Phares of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren Samuel Harper and wife, Lisa, and Matthew Harper and wife, Jenny, all of Franklin, Adam Harper and wife, Cieara of Riverton, and Sarah Nottingham and husband, Steve of Circleville; and five great-grandchildren.

SHe also was preceded in death by five brothers, STanley Phares, Harold PHares, Hansel PHares, Wilber Phares and Edward Phares. 

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of the Basagtic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Pastor Barbara Rexroad officiating. Burial will be at North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.

Memorials may be made to Riverton United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin. 

Roscoe L. Harper

Roscoe Lawrence Harper, 87, of Seneca Rocks died Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Harper was born Jan. 28, 1920, in Riverton and was a son of the late Mason Phillip Harper and Sally Kate Lawrence Harper.

He was a farmer and was a member of High Rock United Methodist Church.

His wife, Hazel Virginia Waggy Harper, preceded him in death Nov. 26, 1997.

He is survived by five daughters, Phyllis Merana of Vienna, VA, Carolyn Bortner of Richmond, VA, Shirley Harper of Luray, VA, Ruby Hedrick of Harrisonburg, VA, and Irene Harper of Lexington, KY; a son, Harvey Harper of Seneca Rocks; a sister, Leona Leach of Flemington; a brother, Wright Harper of Riverton; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pastor Barbara Rexroad conducted the funeral Wednesday at High Rock United Methodist Church. Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. 

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Etta J. Weese, 86

Etta June Vance Weese, 86, of Riverton died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, at her home.

Mrs. Weese was born June 7, 1921, in Onego and was the daughter of the late John Hoy Vance and Delphia Sites Vance.

She owned and operated Valley View Restaurant in Riverton. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Franklin and was a life member of Rock Caverns VFW Post 6862 Ladies’ Auxiliary.

Her husband, John W. Weese, preceded her in death Jan. 3, 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Roy L. Hayes of Baltimore, MD, and David A. Weese of Franklin; two daughters, Betty L. Burner and Lera J. Volz, both of Riverton; a brother, Burrel Vance of Seneca Rocks; special companion, Paul Black of Seneca Rocks; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by one sister, Mae Shirk; and tow brothers, French VAnce and Burt Vance. 

Elder Richard Warner will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. today at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial will be at the Huffman family cemetery at the home place.

Memorial donations may be made to Mountain Hospice Inc., P.O. Box 416, Franklin, WV 26807.

The family received friends from 4 p.m. to 8 pm. Wednesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg.
