Leland Bowers, 83, Bridgeport, and formerly of Brandywine, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001.

Mr. Bowers was born Jan. 6, 1918, in Sugar Grove and was a son of the late Roy Bowers and Sallie Frances Wilfong Bowers.

He was employed by Compton, Inc., Joy Manufacturing and Advanced Mining as a mining equipment salesman. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Clarksburg and the Loyal Order of the Moose in Pendleton county. He was a strong member of the Democratic Committee in Pendleton County for four years.

Surviving are two sons, David Bowers, Bridgeport, and J. Franklin Bowers, Lost Creek; two daughters, Patricia Gage, Fayettsville, PA., and Sondra Bollinger, Bridgeport; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Kenneth Crummitt of Sugar Grove.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dillon Crummitt; an infant daughter; and a grandson, Christopher Gage.

Pastor James L. Caton conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Burnside Funeral Home, Bridgeport. Burial followed at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

David Emanuel Wright, 69, Mount Crawford, VA, died Wednesday Oct. 17, 2001, in the emergency room at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Wright was born March 20, 1932, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Edward Emanuel and Cora Craun Wright.

He worked and retired from Ethan-Allen, Inc., in Bridgewater, VA, where he had worked for more than 20 years. He had worked at Celanese for 19 years and was a member of the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, where he also served as an usher. Mr. Wright also was a member of the Bridgewater and Mount Crawford Ruritan Clubs and served in the US Air Force.

He was united in Marriage on Oct. 30, 1955, to Sally Lambert Wright, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are four sons, Johnny Wright of Frnaklin, Douglas Wright of Bridgewater, VA, Samuel Wright of Mount Crawford, VA, and thomas Wright of Sangersville, VA; four sisters, Edna Cook of Bridgewater, VA, Alma Gallego of Arlington, VA, Mary Knott of Bridgewater, VA, and Galdys Shoemaker of Silver Spring, MD; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Robert E. Alley conducted the funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren. Burial followed in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Ina M. Michefelder Umberger, 75, Annville, PA, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at her residence.

Mrs. Umberger was born May 23, 1926, at Fort Seybert and was a daughter of the late William S. and Bessie Wilfong Ritchie.

She retired after 43 years of service in the manicotti line at the former San Georgio Pasta Factory, Lebanon, PA. She was a graduate of Franklin Hihg School. She was a member of the Annville United Methodist Church, where she was on the kitchen committee, and the singles and doubles Sunday school class; and was also a member of the Lebanon County Humane Society.

She is survived by her husband, Norman A. Umberger; two brothers, Harlan and wife, Lina of Broadway, VA, and Berlin Ritchie and wife Joyce of Lincolnton, NC; seven sisters, Ruth, wife of Eldon Hottinger of Romeny, Mildred, wife of William Briggs of Woodbridge, VA, Erma, wife of Tom May of Broadway, VA, Leona Hottinger ofBrandywine, Arlene, wife of Gene Keyser of Midway Park, NC, Anna Lee, wife of Franklin Burkholder of Harrisonburg, VA, and Wanda, wife of Daniel Simmons of Harrisonburg, VA; a step-son, Norman C. Umberger, and wife, Carol of Akron, OH; two grandchildren, Royce and Crystal Umberger; a sister-in-law, Nellie Ritchie; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a husband, Ernest G. Michenfelder, in 1983; and a brother, Raymond Ritchie.

A funeral service was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Annville United Methodist church in Annville, PA, with interment in the Grand View Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Annville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Main Street and College Avenue, Annville, PA 17003.

Funeral services for Comie Sponaugle, 83, of Baxter, TN, were held Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m., from the Baxter Chapel of Hooper and Huddleston Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Glea Shelley officiating. Burial was in Palmer Cemetery at Silver Point, with full military honors.

Mr. Sponaugle died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at NHC of Cookeville, TN, after a long illness.

He was a World War II Army veteran having served in Europe during the Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland campaigns. He was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal EAME Campaign Medal with three bronze battle stars and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a retired guard with the State of Tennessee. He was a Methodist.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Sponaugle; three brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors are his wife, Pearlie Guinn Sponaugle of Baxter, TN; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Jo Sponaugle of Gordonsville, TN, Mark and Jennell Sponaugle of Baxter, TN, and daughter-in-law, Pat Sponaugle of Silver Point; one brother, John O. Sponaugle of Franklin; five grandchildren, Vanessa Jamin, Carla and Casey Sponaugle, and Valerie Taheny; two great-grandchildren, Morgan and Mason Taheny.

Henry Edsel "Ed" Judy, 73, Riverton, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at his residence.

Mr. Judy was born March 11, 1928, at Riverton and was a son of the late Austin Judy and Beula Warner Judy.

He retired from Republic Steel and was a farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea. He was a member of the American Legion Post 183 and the VFW.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Roxann Judy Hoover and Dr. Kevan Hoover, Franklin; three sisters, Norma Jean Smith, Franklin, Martha L. Bailey, Columbia, SC, and Dessie Brindle, Glen Burnie, MD; two grandchildren, Julian Basagic and RayElla Hoover, both of Franklin; and one aunt, Hattie Lee Huffman, Riverton.

He was also preceded in death by one son,Anthony Lee Judy, in 1977, and one brother, Hansel Weldon Judy.

Rev. Earl Bible conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial followed in the North Fork Cemetery in Riverton.

Military graveside services were provided by Veterans Organizations of Grant county.

Dorothy Puffenbarger Hevener, 69, Monterey, VA, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at the Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, VA.

Mrs. Hevener was born July 31, 1932, inBlue Grass, VA, and was a daughter of the late Kennie Roosevelt and Maude Ellen Whitecotton Puffenbarger.

She was a homemaker and attended Monterey United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Mountain View Extension Homemakers Club.

On May 23, 1953, she married Thomas Carlyle Hevener, who preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1999.

She is survived by three daughters, Ruth Ann Puffenbarger, Cumberland, MD, andVirginia Belle Smith and Mary Dowdy, both of Monterey, VA; a son Thomas E. Hevener, Monterey, VA; five brothers, Luther Whitecotton of Dunnellon, FL, Robert Puffenbarger, Wenatchee, WA, Charles Puffenbarger, Staunton, VA, Carl Puffenbarger, Franklin, and Ray Puffenbarger, Harrisonburg, VA; two sisters, Mamie Faulkner, Verona, VA, and Julia Ann Puffenbarger, Staunton, VA; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Stephanie Wilson conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA. Burial was at the Monterey Cemetery.

Mayselle Harman Zopfi , 95, Maysville, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Grand Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Zopfi was born Oct, 28, 1905, in Riverton and was a daughter of the late Claude and Elizabeth "Betty" Bland Harman.

She lived in Morgantown for over 50 years and moved to Maysville in 1986.

Her husband, William P. Zopfi, died Jan. 8, 1978.

She is survived by four sisters, Pualine Hall and Ruth Thomas, both of Baltimore, MD, Clemence Courtney, Pawtucket, RI, andClaudia Hope George, Maysville; a brother, Lynn D. Harman, Maysville; and several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Joseph D. Eversole conducted the funeral at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Westover.

On October 5, 2001, Wilson R. Johnson, beloved husband of Helen P. Johnson (Murphy), loving father of Lori DeBoy, father-in-law of Dennis DeBoy and devoted grandfather of Noah and Luke DeBoy, passed away.

He is survived by two sister, Helen Miklovic and Thelma Burns; and one brother, Glen Johnson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis and Delmar Johnson.

A memorial service was held in Baltimore, MD. The ashes were interned at the North Fork Memorial Cemetery with a graveside service.
