John L. Skidmore, Jr.

John Lester "J.L." Skidmore Jr., 76, of Franklin died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at his residence.

Mr. Skidmore was born Aug. 12, 1928, in Harrisonburg, Va, and was the son of the late John Lester Skidmore, Sr., and Leta Harold Skidmore. 

He was a farmer.  He graduated from Franklin High School in 1946 and received an associte's degree in business from Potomac State college in 1948.  He was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church. 

On March 11, 1950, he married the former Helen Landes, who survives. 

Also surviving is a daughter, Leslie Sandefur and husband, Donald of Churchville, VA. 

Dr. Richard O. Young conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.  

Memorial contributions may be made tot he Grant county Hospice in care of Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.    

Mary H. Sweitzer, 80

Mary H. Sweitzer, 80, of Monterey, VA, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at the University of Virginia medical Center, Charlottesville, VA. 

Mrs. Sweitzer was born May 31, 1924, near McDowell, VA, and was the daughter of the late Winfield S. and Maggie Alice Varner Hammer.

She was a contributing writer to The Recorder, a DJ for WVLS radio; a supervisors at Aileen, Inc., for 21 years and managed Jessico, Inc., for seven years.  she and her husband owned and operated Midway Station Near McDowell, VA, for 16 years. 

She was a member of Monterey Untied Methodist Church, Highland County Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and an honorary member of the Highland County Chamber of Commerce.   She was also on the board of directors for WVLS; secretary for the Highland County fair Association and belonged to various other organizations. 

Her husband, Ernest T. Sweitzer Sr., preceded her in death. 

Surviving are a son, Ernest T. Sweitzer, Jr., of Monterey, VA; a sister, Anna Lee Pullin of Staunton, VA; a grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

The Revs. Mike Sullivan, Robert Haley and James W. "Bill" Moore conducted the graveside funeral at 2 p.m. Sunday in the McKendree Cemetery. 

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice. 

Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell, VA, was in charge of funeral arrangements.   

Raymond Lambert, Sr., 68

Raymond Howard Lambert Sr., 68, of Sanford, FL, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at the Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, FL.

Mr. Lambert was born Oct. 5,1936, in Fort Seybert and was a son of the late Willie Lambert, Sr., and Daphna Nesselrodt Lambert. 

He was a service technician at Weirich Air. 

On Sept. 29, 1956, he married the former janice Mae Middlekauff of Orlando, FL. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a companion of 16 years, Sherry Brown of Sanford, FL; two sons, Raymond Lambert Jr. of Orlando, FL, and William Brown of Christmas, FL; four daughters, Elva Carr and Linda Cimini, both of Gerrardstown, Janet Matthews of Dayton, VA, and Angie Brown of Georgia, two brothers, Roy Lambert of Mount Jackson, VA, and Willie Lambert, Jr., of Mount Sidney, VA; three sisters, Flossie Sager of Bridgewater, VA, Kathlyn Borror of Harrisonburg, VA, and Kay Price of Broadway, VA; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.  

A private burial was held at Linville Cemetery. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Johnson Funeral Service, P.O. Box 41, Bridgewater, VA 22812, to assist with burial expenses. 

Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater, VA, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
