Harold Armentrout, 82

Harold Dwite Armentrout, 82, of Rockville, MD, died of a massive heart attack on Sept. 28, 2007.  He was stricken while at work and death was sudden and unexpected.  

Born Dec. 8, 1924, in Mouth of Seneca, he was the son of the late Bernie and Iva Armentrout. 

Mr. Armentrout served with the US Army Corps of Engineers during the World War II Pacific Campaign.  He held a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from DAvis and Elkins College, Elkins.  He was a civil engineer for Montgomery County, MD, for 30 years and for the City of Gaithersburg, MD, for 21 years.  He led the construction of many City of Gaithersubrg projects, including the outdoor swimming pool the miniature golf course at Bohrer Park and Kelly Park ball fields.  He also was the supervisor of all road, bridge and parking lot construction. 

His wife of 52 years, Doris Harris Armentrout, preceded him in death. 

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda K. Armentrout of Olney, MD; a son, Thomas D. Armentrout and his wife, Denise of Monrovia, MD; four granddaughters, Marie, Katie, Krista and Sarah Armentrout; a brother, Max Armentrout and wife, JOhnnie of Elkins; five sister, Olive Vance of Berryville, VA, Doris Armentrout of Forestville, MD, Josie Toomey of Camp Springs, MD, Karen Conlan of Rockville, MD, and Retha Woeckener of Missouri City, TX; a sister-in-law, Patricia Armentrout of Elkins; a brother-0in-law, Ralph "Penny" Pendleton of Rockville, MD; and several nieces and nephews. 

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Stacy Blair Armentrout; and a sister, Norma Armentrout Pendleton. 

Funeral services were held at Millian Memorial United Methodist Church, Rockville, MD, on Oct. 2 with interment in the Gates of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Srpign, MD.

Mary A. Wolford

Mary Alice Pitsenbarger Wolford, 76, a resident of Harrisonburg, VA, died unexpectedly at her home on Oct. 9, 2007.

She was born Jan. 23, 1931, in Sugar Grove and was the daughter of the late Henry M. and Nora Alice Smith Pitsenbarger.

Ms. Wolford was a member of the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren and worked for SunTrust Bank for 25 years before retiring in January 1995. Prior to living in Harrisonburg, VA, she resided for 18 years in western Maryland, where she was a member of the Eastern Star and the Lavale Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Wolford Norris and her husband, Bob, of Harrisonburg, VA; a granddaughter, Whitney Shay Hardy of Harrisonburg, VA; two sisters, Betty Propst of Harrisonburg,VA, Linnwood Coon of Fairfax, VA; one brother, Henry M. Pitsenbarger Jr. of Franklin.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Fred A. Pitsenbarger of Brandywine.

A funeral service was held Friday at Bridgewater Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Robert Alley officiating. Burial followed in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren.

Hilda Puffenbarger, 74

Hilda Louise Puffenbarger74, loving wife, mother, grandmother and "nanny", of Locust Grove, VA, went to be with the Lord on  Oct. 11, 2007.

Mrs. Puffenbarger was a daughter of the late William Robert and Nora Lee (Simmons) Gum. 

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Elbert "Pete" Puffenbarger. 

Also surviving are a daughter; Betty Steven six grandchildren, Terry Stevens, Jr., Scotty Stevens, Melissa Paddy, Daniel Page IV, Valerie Price and Jennifer Hise; eight great-grandchildren, Carson and Tyler Stevens, Devin Paddy, Bethanie Price, Troy and Katelyn Hise; two brothers, Richard Gum and William R. Gum, JR.; a sister, Shirley Triplett; numerous nieces and nephews; and a loving nanny to Ashley Waggoner.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Page, and a sister, Velda Hopkins. 

A funeral service was conducted Monday at Victory Baptist Church in Staunton, VA, by Pastors Rader Ogden and Ryan Flanders.  Burial was in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.

Betty J. White

Betty J. White, age 76 years, a resident of Whitmer, passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, at her home. She had been in declining health for the past year.

She was born May 17, 1931, at Cass, a daughter of the late Fred and Freda Vance.

On Sept. 8, 1949, she was married to Lester White, who survives at Whitmer.

Mrs. White attended the schools of Cass, was an active member of Whitmer Church of God and the Ladies Auxiliary and a school volunteer. She enjoyed crocheting and making quilts for her family and loved flowers. She was a homemaker and enjoyed canning and making biscuits and homemade bread. She was a fan of the West Virginia University Mountaineers and the Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren in various sporting activities.

Also surviving are ten sons, Kenneth White and wife, Debbie of Newark, Ohio, Harry White of Rock Hill, SC, Gary White and wife, Belinda of Whitmer, Phil White and wife, Sally of Topton, NC, James White and wife, Johnnie Mae of Fort Mill, SC, William White of Whitmer, Donald White and wife, Kerry of Spencer, IN, Larry White and wife, Bonnie of Red Creek, Leonard White and wife, Sandy, of Salisbury, NC, and Brian White of Bowden; seven daughters, Mrs. Harry (Carolyn Sue) Hardy, of Parsons, Mrs. Wayne (Patricia) Lambert of Beverly, Mrs. John (Karen) Shaver of Charlotte, NC, Peggy Owens of Catawba, SC, Mrs. Olie (Joyce) White of Bowden, Mrs. Gary (Catherine) Vandevender of Whitmer, Mrs. Doug (Mary) Knight of Denver, NC,; and a daughter-in-law, Melodee White of Elkins; two sisters, Kitty Blockinger of Cumberland, MD, and Carol “Babe” Sullivan of CA; a brother, Dave Irvin; 25 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Also preceding her in death were one son, John White; and three brothers, Don and Alvin “AB” Irvin and Buck Vance.

A funeral home was held Sept. 11 at the Job Church of God with Rev. Todd Rhodes, Rev. Ernie Francis and Pastor Steve Bailey officiating.  Interment followed in the Laurel Hill Cemetery near Whitmer. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Hospice, 1600 Crim Ave., Belington, W.Va. 26250 in memory of Mrs. White.

Pearl Crigler

Pearl Lucille “Lou” Crigler, 81, of Richmond, IN, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Reid Hospital, Richmond, IN. 

She was born July 18, 1926, in Preston County to the late Olgia G. and Bertha Pearl Teets Hartman and lived in Richmond for over 60 years. 

Mrs. Crigler was a member of Sylvan Nook Church of Christ. She was a poetry writer, had several poems published and had her family poetry books made. She enjoyed garage sales and greeting people at church. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Crigler, formerly of Franklin, on Sept. 5, 2005.  They were married in June 1945. 

She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Lee Crigler and Patricia Ann Stanley and her husband, Vern, all of Bassett, VA; son, Richard Ray “Rick” Crigler of Richmond, IN; eight grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Junior Hartman of Kingwood and William Hartman of Richmond, IN; uncle, Steve Teets and wife, Sarah of Kingwood; aunt, Betty Ruby “Minnie” Shrout of California; nieces; nephews and cousins; her family at Sylvan Nook Church of Christ and many lifelong friends. 

She was also preceded in death by a son, Tommy Leo Crigler; two great-grandsons; one step-granddaughter; one sister and one brother.

Funeral services were held Oct. 11 at Doan and Mills Funeral Home, Richmond, IN, with Rev. Michael Ballard and Rev. John Hollis officiating. Entombment followed at the Earlham Memorial Mausoleum.

Loretta Moyers

Loretta June Crigler Moyers, 74, of Lynchburg, VA, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, at Avonte of Lynchburg, VA. 

Mrs. Moyers was born July 28, 1933, in McDowell, VA. She was the daughter of the late Virgil W. and Pauline Simmons Crigler of Franklin. 

She was retired from Smartwear Irving Saks and was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where she served on the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Noblettes.

She was the wife of Lacy Evan Moyers for 56 years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters, Terry M. Mason and husband, Joe of Marietta, GA, Denny M. Harrell and husband, Hogie of Midlothian, VA, Sherry M. Homan and husband, Morris of Moorefield, Kim M. Crist and husband, Steve of Green Cove Springs, FL, and Susan M. Smith and husband, Chuck of Lynchburg, VA; two brothers, Edwin Lee Crigler of Monterey, VA, and Robert Ronald Crigler and wife, Billie of Sanford, NC; and grandchildren, Erin and Megan Mason, Laurie Kushin and Drew Harrell, Cara and Adam Homan, Robbie, Nick, and Lacey Crist, and Lesley and Ryan Smith.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. today at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lynchburg, VA, with Pastors James L. Armentrout and Dennis S. Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in the Masonic Garden of Fort Hill Memorial Park.
