Claris Maxine Garner

Claris Maxine, Garner, 74, of Brandywine, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at her home. 

Ms. Garner was born March 19, 1930, near Princeton and was a daughter of the late George Eldridge Siner and Carrie Elizabeth Quillen Siner. 

She was a baker at Safeway Grocery.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Brandywine and the Local 118 Teamster's Union. 

Survivors include two sons, Jon Eric White of Brandywine and Rick Hankins of Las Vegas, NV, and two sisters, Patricia Gail Garner of Dunkirk, MD, and Betty Ruth Eye of Brandywine.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Hankins; one brother, Eldridge Siner; and two sisters, Inez Taylor and Gloria Burnett. 

The Rev. Tracy C. Fletcher conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandywine.    

Jean Snyder Hartman

Jean Elizabeth Snyder Hartman died Monday, October 4, 2004 at her home in Staunton, VA. 

Mrs. Hartman was born in Moorefield, a daughter of the late Grover Snyder and Mabel Hott Snyder. 

She graduated from Moorefield High School in 1944 and went to work for the IRS in Washington DC.  From 1951 until 1956, while Mr. Hartman was teaching and coaching at Franklin High School, Mrs. Hartman worked for the Farmer's Home Administration in Franklin.  She also worked for the Air Force in Frankfurt / Main Germany.  She retired from the Staunton, VA Social Security office in 1985 as the operations supervisor. 

An avid traveler, Mrs. Hartman lived in France, Germany and Ethiopia and had traveled to all of the continental United States, Canada, Mexico, most of Europe, and some of Asia and Africa.  she was also a seamstress, having made most of her own and her children's clothes.  She played the piano and also sang in the choir in Duffey Memorial Methodist Church in Moorefield.

She married Robert Warner Hartman of Franklin, who survives, in 1946.   

Also surviving are two daughters, Nancy Sue Hartman of Staunton, VA, and Lois Hartman of Mint Spring, VA; dear friends, Sharon Deacon and Jeff and Teri Schutte Friedler; a sister-in-law Joann Allen of Moorefield; a brother-in-law, jack Hartman of St. Augustine FL; three nieces and four nephews; and cousins by marriage in Pendleton County. 

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hartman was preceded in death by her son, Gary Hartman, her sister, Snook Schutte Beard, and a nephew, Don Schutte.  

A graveside service was conducted by Reverend Ed Piper at Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield on Wednesday, Oct. 13, followed by a Celebration of Life luncheon at Colt's Restaurant.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Elmore Funeral Home in Moorefield.  

Elmer R. Eckard, 62

Elmer Richard Eckard, 62, of Fork Road, Moorefield, passed away Monday morning, Oct 11, 2004, at the Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA. 

Mr. Eckard was born January 9, 1942, in Sugar Grove and was a son of the late Alfred R. and Anna Mae  (King) Eckard. 

He is survived by his wife of 24 years , Dianna (Varner) Eckard; two daughters, Melissa Eckard of Pheonix, AZ, and doris Ayers of Moorefield; three brothers, Teddy Eckard of Milam, Charles Eckard of Fisher and Delmas Eckard of Elkton, VA; four sisters, Anna Calloway of Spartansburg, SC, Thelma Sherman of Petersburg, Bertha Calhoun of Upper Tract, and Vicki Losh of Brandywine; and four grandchildren. 

The family received friends Wednesday from 508 p.m. Friday at the Obaugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Shannon Mullins officiating.  Interment will follow at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Sugar Grove.

Floyd A. Helmick, 74

Floyd Adam Helmick, 74, of Maysville died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.  

Mr. Helmick was born Oct. 16, 1929, at Smoke Hole and was the son of the late Amby Curtis Helmick and Mary Ellen Kimble Helmick. 

He was a farmer. 

His wife, Alice Mae Keplinger Helmick, preceded him in death in 1980. 

He is survived by a son, James William Helmick of Maysville; two sisters, Tressie Perchalski and Edith Anderson, both of Upper Marlboro, MD; and two grandsons, James Duane and Bryson William Helmick.  

Also preceding him in death were four brothers, Ben, Willie, Hughie and Amby Helmick, and three sisters, Sarah Jane George, Ethel Hartman and Alice Criser. 

The Rev. Stanley Kile conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at the Maysville Cemetery, Maysville. 

Memorial donations may be made to Grant County Rescue Squads or the Maysville Volunteer Fire Company.
