Homer John Yokum

Homer John Yokum, 69, a resident of Harman, departed this life Thursday morning, Sept. 22, 2005, at Moorefield. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

He was born April 18, 1936, at Elkins, a son of the late Homer Yokum and Freda Cooper Yokum, who survives at the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center. 

Mr. Yokum was a graduate of Harman High School with the class of 1954, received his bachelor of science degree from West Virginia University with the class of 1958 and received his master’s degree in forestry from the University of Florida with the class of 1960. He was retired from the United States Forest Service, was a farmer and a member of the Harman Church of the Brethren.

Also surviving are one sister, Hazel Hesson and husband, Ray of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one nephew, Stacy Sturdivant and wife, Stacie, of Owings, Md.; and two great-nephews.

Funeral services were held Sept. 25 at the Harman Church of the Brethren with the Reverend John Moyer officiating.  Interment followed in the Cooper Cemetery near Harman.

Nola J. Harman

Mrs. Nola Jean Alt Harman, 72, of Petersburg and formerly of Temple Hills and Clinton, MD, died Saturday Oct. 8, 2005, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

Mrs. Harman was born Sept. 30, 1933, in Kline, she was the daughter of the late Charles Austin and Nola Adrian Dean Alt . 

She attended Schmucker School in Kline and was a member of the United Methodist Church.  She retired in 1998 from the Department of Defense as a map mounter after 25 years of service. 

Her husband, Harry R. Harman, preceded her in death Feb. 2, 1974. 

She is survived by one son, Harry Ronnie Harman of Petersburg, and several nieces and nephews.  

Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Glen Austin Alt, Ray Edward Alt and Richard Mason Alt.

The Rev. Stanley Kile conducted the funeral Wednesday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at Lline Cemetery.

Nola H. Morris, 103

Nola H. Morris, 103, Clearville, PA, went home to be with the lord on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005from the home of her daughter, Betty, with whom she resided. 

She was born Dec. 17, 1901, in Pendleton County, a daughter of the late John Add Morral and Hanna Rebecca (Harman) Morral.

 Mrs. Morris was a lifetime member of the Pleasant Union Church, having moved to Clearville, PA, in 1920 with her mother, father and family to establish their family farm.  After her marriage in 1923, she and her husband owned and operated their own Monroe Township Farm for over 46 years.  

On Dec. 24, 1923, at the first United Church of Christ Parsonage in Everett, PA, she married Robert W. Morris, who preceded her in death on July 30, 1970.  

She was the last surviving member of her family of 13 brothers and sisters.  

Surviving are children, Kathryn Clark, and husband, G. Bruce Clark of Medina, OH, Robert Ross Morris of Youngstown, OH, and Betty Barkman, and husband, Duane Barkman of Clearville, PA; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.  

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Bruce Morris and Ivan Morris; four sisters, Bessie, Julie, Delphia and Polly and eight brothers, Gilbert, Irving, Olie, Algie, James, Wilmer, Denton and Arlie. 

 Funeral services were held Oct. 1 at Dalla Valle Funeral Service in Everett, PA, with Rev. Lyle Mellot officiating.  Burial was at Pleasant Union Cemetery, Clearville, PA.  

Mabel Marie Roberson

Mabel Marie Roberson, 85, of Franklin, died at her residence on Oct. 8, 2005. 

Born March 22, 1921, in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Lula Lambert and Claude A. Simmons.  

Mrs. Roberson retired in 1989 after working at Roy's tlantic Service Station for 29 years.  She also worked for the Sitzler family in Cumberland, MD, and M.W. Byrd in Franklin.  She was a member of the Frankli Presbyterian Church. 

On Dec. 22, 1941, she married Roy Curtis Roberson, who preceded her in death on May 8, 2003. 

Surviving are one daughter, Wendy Huffman and husband Ron of Franklin; three sisters, Blanche Johnson and Elva Breedlove, both of Cumberland, MD; and Retha Morris of Louisville, KY; five grandchildren, Stephen Lee roberson of Sugar Grove, Amy Roberson of Franklin, Daniel Roberson of the US Air Force, Germany, Torrey Huffman of Broadway, VA, and Stephanie Huffman-Hensley of Hinesville, GA; three great-grandchildren, Katrina, Monica and Jayden Roberson. 

Also preceding her in death were one son, Stephen Roberson; three brothers, Ed Simmons, Roy Simmons and Oscar Simmons; and three sisters, Cornelia Hedrick, Ruth McKenzie and Ollie Simmons.   

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Kevin hand officiating.  Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin. 

Memorials may be made tot he Franklin Volunteer Fire Department.  

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  

Brenda S. Simmons

Mrs. Brenda S. Simmons, 49, of Brandywine, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005 at her home.

Mrs. Simmons was born July 7, 1956, at Ronceverte, the daughter of the late W. Glenn and Maycel Warner Sponaugle.

She was a cashier at CVS and Family Dollar and was a member of Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren. 

On April 29, 1972, she married David W. Simmons, who survives.  

Also surviving are two daughters, Tonia S. Hedrick and Trisha L. Anderson, both of Brandywine; three sisters, Debbie J. Frame, of Moorefield, Ruth Skoglund, of Lewis, DE and Linda Sponaugle, (her twin sister) of Dover, DE; four brothers, William Sponaugle II of Rehoboth Beach, DE and Tim Sponaugle, Chris Sponaugle and Dan Sponaugle, all of Delaware; and four grandchildren, Connor Hedrick, Carrigan Hedrick, Corrine Hedrick and Jenna Rose Anderson.

Pastor Mark Bowser conducted the funeral Wednesday at Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren.  Burial was at Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandywine by the Kimble Funeral Home, Franklin.
